Default Pica 1/6th Waco YMF-5 Flies!

I flew my Pica 1/6th scale Waco YMF-5 for the first time yesterday. She flies great! Take off was a bit tricky to learn. Her tail tries to come up and lift the rest of the airplane, causing her to do a summer salt onto her back. I found a little down elevator took care of that. She made a beautifull take off into the Wild Blue and performed very well. The engine, a K&B 61 needs a little tweeking, but will be fine. She weighs 11 pounds. Landing was no problem at all, a perfect
two wheeler, powered down and the tail nestled to the ground. I'll enjoy this airplane for some time, I'm sure.

Yes, I'm a Warbird lover, but the Waco is a great choice for a civilian aircraft.

Flak, congrats! The pica Waco is indeed a good flier in either the 1/6 or 1/5 version.

This must be the Pica Waco YMF 3/5 1/6 . I'm building this Bi-plane at the moment. I just started the fuselage.
Just looking at the plans I noticed that the only access to the fuel tank box is from the front of the bottom former F-4b, it is also quite a small area, which limits the size of the fuel tank to about 10 ozs., same problem with the battery. I am only at the biginning of the fuse, I just have the two crutches pinned and the part of the tail, all the bottom formers are being dry tested (not glued in) at this stage until I figure out what's best to be done. Have you modified this area. Is there a possibility of a hatch for the tank and battery just incase they need quick access. The way I see it if the fuel tank requires checking the engine have to be removed first, which I think it's a bad situation.

Gartwood

I think you will be able to fit a Sullivan 12 oz flex tank into the tank box. Without doing a bunch of re-engineering, I don't see anyway to get better access to the tank

I've been looking around and it appears that this kit is no longer available as new. I'll be going to AMA Convention 2005 and hope someone will have it in the "Swap Shop".

Hi Tom:
Thanks for your reply. My funtana came with a Hangar 9 fuel tank 10 0zs, which I never used. This tank fits like a glove in the Waco fuel tank box. I tell you there's not that much room in that tank box. I never tried The Sullivan flex tanks before, still the fuel has to move around. The area being so tight, how did you insulate the tank to avoid foaming ?. With this 10 ozs. tank there's no way to put foam in there, maybe a bit on the sides, but up and down it's quite tight.

Question:

I'm working on the bottom Formers, I've noticed that the main landing wire that attaches with the Former F-5B is angled, that is the top of that Former when I'm looking at the plans is leaning forward toward the F-4B, which gives you the impression when looking sideways to the wire a lean to the rear. The front wire block looks angled. Am I right here ?. What I understand is that Former
F-5B is to be glued in at an angle. Please Correct me if I'm wrong.

Regards
Garthwood

Garthwood,

Yes, F5B is angled. The angle is set by F20. Glue F5B to F20 and the tank box sides.

I slid a Sullivan 12 oz flex tank into the tank box. You are correct in that it is a snug fit, with no room for padding. I'm going to give it a try. If I have problems, I'll have to change it.

These are my most recent pics. I hope to cover the fuselage soon.

Tom your Waco just looks great. Nice job. It looks like you started your covering. Are you installing your engine right side up or inverted. The reason I ask, I noticed that the engine mount supports are set to the bottom, If the engine is installed inverted they go to the top. What engine do you have in mind ?.

About the fuel tank box, I read somewhere that fuel tubing cut in little pieces can be squeezed in there. I haven't tried it yet.

Charles.

Thanks Charles.

I'm covering the WACO with Super Coverite. The wings are now covered and I hope to get to the fuselage tomorrow.

I plan on installing my OS 91 Surpass upright.

Thanks for the fuel tubing tip. Puff Daddy will appreciate it, too.

I was hoping he had some pics of the area that you were inquiring about. I doubt that he will. I just talked to him on the phone. He was putting the bottom sheeting on his. That will cover everything up.

Keep us informed of your progress. Post pics if you can.

Charles,

Puff Daddy sent me this pic last night. If you look hard enough, you may be able to see the installation of former F5B

Randy's kit is at least 20 years old. He's been having to replace some of his wood.

I have a 1/6 Waco kit but I can't find the plans. If anyone has a set of plans that you don't need anymore, I sure would like to buy them.

Thanks,

Wayne

Sorry, I don't have the plans to my Waco. I am thinking of replacing the K&B 61 with a S/T 90 in the spring for more aerobatic functionability. Good luck.

Hi Tom: Here's the progress picture. Hope it works. Also your full scale picture looks really nice. When I preview the text, I don't see the picture. I followed your instructions. Took some time to upload. Upload was successful, but when I preview I just don't see it.

Hi Tom:
It did work. Thanks for your help. I guess the picture won't show when previewing. That was a dry fit just to check that everything is working out. I will send you some more later on. Since that picture I have started on the stringers. Everything falling in place smoothly. Thanks for your help and the rest of the guys who also pitched in.

Hi Tom;
For the Inter-plane struts I'll be installing airfoiled aluminum struts (K&S), instead of the wooden ones that Pica supplied. The kit ones warped slightly and they might effect the wing's incidence, just trying to avoid frustrations later. Regarding the weight not much difference, the work is almost the same.
See the picture.

You're moving right along!!! Looks like you and Puff Daddy are at the same spot.

I finished covering mine with Super Coverite. I hope to have it in primer by the weekend.

Tom you sure move fast. Is the coverite material similar to Ultracoat (Hangar 9)?. If I'm not mistaking it looks similar to silk, with a bit of texture.

I finished soldering the landing gear. I did'nt solder the wheel pants metal plates. I don't think I'll put them on anyways. I fly off grass and I find grass a bit hard on wheel pants. In the kit there are two pieces of flat steel plates, one a bit thicker than the other one. I'm sure they have a purpose, but I'm not at a point where they're mentioned, unless these are the metal plates for the wheel pants.

Do you have any comments regarding the inter-plane struts ?.

Hi Garthwood

The Super Coverite is like 21st Century fabric, but it need to be painted. I've never applied an easier to use covering.

I'm moving faster than usual on my WACO. The last kit I built was a Holman FW 190 D9. It was foam and glass. I prefer wood and I'm enjoying the WACO very much. Can't seem to stay away from it.

I like your idea on the struts. Thought about doing the same, but ended up using the supplied materials.

Hi Tom:
Have you ever used 21st Century covering, and if you did is it a pain, can it withstand stretching ?. I like the sureface texture.

Have you thought about the forward cockpit ?. If there's a cockpit in the forward area, would'nt it be easier to put the battery in there ?.

I'm lost about the Holman FW190 D90. Is this another bi-plane ?.

Yes..........the Waco does get you addicted to it. I keep sneaking down the workshop and the misses keeps thinking I have a girlfriend.

@1st Century Fabric is the second easiest covering that I've used. been using it since it was introduced. It stretches easily around corners.

I'm not planning on installing the forward cockpit. I'll use them to do the final balance. I don't forsee a proble putting them in the suggested compartment.

The FW D9 is a German WWII fighter. The WACO is my first bipe. Check this out, if you have some time. http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/...p?TID=150&PN=1

My wife is glad that I go to the workshop. At least she know where I am !!!
