RE: YAK 18 P or PM
McLeodAviation, yes please send me the manual
so the yak 50 have fixed landing gear? great.
only 100$ ? that was cheap! i paid over 120 only for the two main gears (robart) in my 60 size mustang.
if anyone of you got a video or pictures of a yak 50 / 18 flying, please post it here! [8D]

John, I am interested in seeing your 3-view drawings. Please post for everyone to see or email to me.
Blue_Moon, Looks like a Yak 50 conversion can be easily done. You could build a Yak 50 with or without retracts. There are many choices for retracts. I am using Spring-Air units. Think I paid over $100 for my three gear retracts. If you like I can email you the pages from my Sig instruction manual?

I am not saying it's not doable, just that there might be a little more involved than you imply.

The airplane was first published in Model Airplane News as a construction article. SIG based this design on the kit. Hurst Bowers also designed one that was published in RCM. The SIG kit and plans are VR/CS legal scale models. Go to http://www.vintagercsociety.org for the approved planes list. It will be nice to see this classic scale model flying!

There quite a bit of difference between the 2, they are really from 2 different generations. The yak 18P and 18PM are single seat evolution of a 2 seat trainer, using a 260 hp engine for teh 18P and 300hp for the 18PM. They all have a retractable landing gear. By difference, the Yak 50 (Not 52!) has been built from the start to be a single seat competition aerobat. It is descending from the 18P and 18PM, but it is a taildragger, still with retractable landing gear, 360hp, much lighter than the 18, different wing plan form, retracts like the Zlin 286, along the chord rather than along the spar, 9.5 meter wingspan while the 18 has 11.16 meters.

RE: YAK 18 P or PM
I built and flew the Yak 18PM version for the Sig kit when it was first released years ago. I had a ST .71 Rear rotor for power and it was overpowered. Since I retired I decided to build another one, so I took my org. plans and blew everything up 20%. This gives me an 86.4" wing. The Yak is a good model since you can build 2 different aircraft with a change of dihedral and moving the canopy back. I have my first one almost complete (a P model) and should have it up this spring. With everything being lasr cut it goes together quite easily. Have a great day everyone.

Someday I'll learn to spell LASER. I can run a set of the 86.4" plans if anyone is interested. Also have Corel 10 files of all the parts for my laser. Have a great day.

Hello WJF2,
I'm happy to here your Sig Yak 18PM had power to spare with the old Super Tiger 71 engine. I plan to run a Super Tiger 75 on my Sig Yak 18PM.
Your enlarged version sounds very interesting! How did you make a canopy and cowl??? Did you do any changes to the spars or tail feathers? Will you be using retracts? Will you be running a Zenoah gas engine?
If possible please post some pictures of your models.
I might be interested in copy of the plans.

RE: YAK 18 P or PM
Actually it is both. The wing center section is common to both. The big difference in the center section is P (flap) or PM (Speed Brake). I laid out a spar for the 3.375" dihedral for the P and 1.250" for the PM. The ribs are common. The tail surfaces are sized to scale but I designed a elevator with a scale hinge line and one with a, shall we say "sport" hinge line. It is equipped with Robart retracts and Gary at Robart made me a scale nose strut. Right now I looking a putting an OS 1.08 in it since I have a new one laying on the bench. But I have considered trying an electric. I have 2 layouts of the Fuselage - one is the P version and the other is the PM. The fuse formers for both versions are on a parts sheet. I'm working on the plug for the cowl and a friend of my is going to make the mold. The plug for the canopy is being finished by a young man who makes Sailplane kits and has a vac. forming machine. I just got my first digital camera so I'll try the picture thing. Have a great day.

WJF2,
Very very nice work!!! Very nice workshop too!
Great job on your instrument panel. Are you replicating the full cockpit with pilot seat etc...?
I don't know anything about Coral 10 files and using a Laser cutter but being able to accurately produce the same part over and over is fantastic!

RE: YAK 18 P or PM
Hello yak modelers,
I just happened to stumble across your activity and thought I would post this message.
One person was looking for an original photo of the first Yak 50, with bubble canopy and fixed gear. you can find that photo at: members.cox.net/yakpilot/yak-50.htm. Only one photo exists, which I got when in Moscow at the yakovlev co. when I bought the original Yak 50, serial #1
another person wanted details or photo of the only yak 18Pm existing. I happened to own that aircraft, it is at Arlington airport in Wash. State. I will be glad to send what photos you might need of the original plane.

RE: YAK 18 P or PM
Young man, I would love some photos of the PM, including if possible the cockpit and inst. panel, LG struts, various flying surface hinge lines, air scoops. You know - anything that an old f_rt might need to complete a good scale model. I would be glad to reimburse you for your time and effort. Have a great day.
Thanks WJF2

Hello Bill Nielsen,
You have owned two very rare and interesting YAK aircraft or do you still own them? I tried your link to the YAK 50 photo but didn't work. Please double check the link.
I'd also be very interested in pictures of the only existing PM model. I had no idea there was only one in existence. Could this be the PM which won the World Aerobatic Championships in 1966?
