Default Piper L-4 Grasshopper documents?

Hi,

I´m about to start building a 1/4 scale Piper L-4 Grasshopper. I´m using Jim Pepino plans, they are very sharp and scale-like, there is a lot of scale details presented. I also have a set of photos from Bob Banka as well as some proper 3-view drawings. The Banka photos are pretty good, so I already have enough documentation to start building. Anyway, the plane in Banka photos is a kind of "not-so-good restoration" with tinted windows and some other problems. Also, the markings and number are not very adequate compared to the original paint and marking scheme of WW2-time L-4.

What I need is some good photos of L-4 with correct kind of marks and numbers (and the invasion stripes, of course!). It can be a museum-plane or a flying one, that´s not an issue. Just something I can use to duplicate the color, marks and numbers.

If you know some good sources, please let me know. Also, I´m willing to buy your good photos if you have them. All help is appreciated.

Regards, Hannu

from Finland

I've got a fair batch of photos of a pristine 1:1 L-4. Also have several reference books and the FS paint numbers, if that matters.

A full set of the 1:1 photos eats up something like 168 megs, so how do you want to receive them ?

I built a 1/5 scale one from a SIG J-3 kit and had to modify the airframe without 3 view drawings. I punched in "L-4 Grasshopper" on MSN search and went to dang near every site listed. Got some great photos of L-4's in all manner of livery, even a picture of one with 3 bazookas mounted under each wing! (at the point where the jury struts attach to the main wing strut). Used proportional calipers to dimension everything. Finally got to check my accuracy against the real thing-- a local small grass strip has a newly restored L-4J and I measured it. I was so close with mine the difference is not detectable. Try these addresses:

Default I've got some DRAWINGS available...

Dear HHJul and Fellow RCU'ers:

The PIPE Here AGAIN...and I ALMOST got my very FIRST full scale aircraft ride in the Piper L-4 I chose to do as my very FIRST RC Scale model...the one that bears the US civil registration NC51992...way back in 1978!!!

Ive got a "fairly GOOD scan" of the SCALE DRAWINGS of the old Aero Modeller scale drawings of the Piper L-4 available for download (a bit of BLACKENING from cellophane TAPE used to hold it together "mars" part of it) if wanted...and an old 'RC Sportsman' article on how to modify the Sig 1/6th scale "RC-3" Piper J-3 kit into an L-4 is something I've ALSO got scanned for download if wanted!

The ONLY other "really SCALE construction" sets of plans of making up a TRULY SCALE fuselaged J-3 OR L-4 Cub...with ALL the model's fuselage construction pieces in the EXACT SAME locations as the FULL SIZE one has...is from the Sig RC-3 Cub kit, from the Bob Nelitz ONE THIRD scale Piper J-3 plans, OR from the plans available at http://www.yolo.net/~jeaton/gems/6cub.htm for the "GEMS" Piper J-3 Cub, which is the same scale as the Sig "RC-3" kit.

Someone here mentioned Bob Banka's photo service...well, the Sig 1/6th scale Cub I've got from that late 1970s period, and WHICH I STILL HAVE, and for which I very well may get a brand new Enya 53-4C engine at the 2005 WRAMS Show, to fly it with once more (once I replace the old WINGS with all NEW ones that will have real Frise hinged ailerons on it, and will be MUCH lighter than the old set) can be found in its full size version in FotoPaaks numbered 3105 and 3890...no kidding, as that IS the plane I ALMOST flew in, in the summer of 1978, when it used to be based up in Rockland, Maine!!!

PLEASE let me know IF anyone here who's ALREADY posted would like copies sent to them by Email of the Aero Modeller Piper L-4 scale drawings...DESPITE the tape shadow on them...OR the RC Sportsman article that I scanned on converting the Sig RC-3 Cub kit to an L-4!

"Hope to hear from you real soon"...

Yours Sincerely,

The PIPE!

check out my photo gallery. I have an L-5. I also have the picture of the real plane which mine was made from. As always, Canavanbob projects are superb. Nice colors also. Can't wait to see it fly. Looking at the Iraqi pita you brought, you would think were were in Lake Isabella and not the desert of Southern California!!!

See you at the field

The Pipe;
I just read your post on RC Universe about the drawings you have avalible for the Piper L-4.
I'm in the process of building a Goldberg Cub that I would like to convert into a L-4.
The Goldberg Cub has a wimgspan of 77" and a length of 48". I realise that the post is not recent but if you feel the the drawimgs would be of help I would appreciate making arrangements for a copy.
Thanks Bud

Hannu, there is a superb, but thin, softback book on the L4 available. It has scale drawings of the structure, details, internals, controls etc. It also shows the markings for a particular L4, marked as 44 D. Only snag is that it is a Polish publication, therefore written in Polish! The drawings are really good though. If this is of interest, I could give you the ISBN number and scan some of it to tempt you!

Ian, I would be interested in learning more about this Polish publication as an L-4 is most likely going to be my next project.

The Pipe, would appreciate your emailing the two L-4 items referenced in your 10/18 post.

Thanks to both.

Bob

Hi Cub fans.
Apologies for these images only being photo's, but my scanner obviously doesn't want to be as helpful as I me!! The book doesn't have an ISBN number infortunately, the only number on it says - Index 37766X - worth finding, specialist aviation book shops should be able to get it.
