RE: All you Gee Bee people reply!
Hey fella's,
I see this forum has been dead for awhile but i will post some information anyways. I have 2 NWHT Gee Bee's. I have the 85" Gee Bee Z with a G45 in it. I also have the R2 with the same wing span. This is my 2nd R2. I dont think I will build another one. They are great attention getters and decent fliers, but there is a reason you dont see 10 of them on the flight line. I have a couple hundred flights all together on my 2 big Gee Bee's, not all without incident. The R2 flies alot better than my Z. I had a dead stick with my R2 a couple months ago in Indiana. The wheel pants didnt survive the plowed corn field it landed in. Here are some real recent pics of both of my planes.

The 70 four stroke sounds about right.

RE: All you Gee Bee people reply!
I built the Page 1/5 scale R2 about a year ago. It was a very easy build and turned out a nice looking and flying little plane. I also had some trouble with the plane flipping on landing. To fix that, I bent the landing gear wires to get the wheel as far foward as possible. This wasn't a lot, maybe 1/4" or so but every little bit helps. Then I smoothed the seam where the front of the pants meets the back of the pants because I noticed that the gap was catching grass. The recommended Dave Brown 4" wheels are trash. I replaced them with Sullivan SkyLite 3.5" wheels and opened up the opening in the pants as much as possible. I also located all of the radio equiptment as low as possible to keep the CG low. I put the battery right behind the firewall at the bottom of the plane. I fly off of average height grass and havn't had a noseover in at least 6 months. It will even do wheel landings without a hint of nosing over.
It is definatly a good flying plane. I was afraid that it was going to be a hanger queen but it has turned into a weekly flyer.

See my post #48 re the Kyosho Model Z.
Mine has never been near tarmac, most landings are successful if not pretty
If you like the Z, & can pick one up GO FOR IT!!!
Enjoy it & make sure you call your landings nice & loud so your fellow club members can laugh with you!!!!!!!
Cheers
PS. The guys in my club have decided the Z is rated for up to 1/2 a knot of crosswind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anybody come up with a better method of attaching the wheel pants on the GP Gee Bee. Mine are getting some serious abuse and cracking all over the place.

But I was wondering why you trashed the Dave Brown 4" wheels and what makes the Sullivan Skylite 3.5 better? Is it just the size that makes them clear the pants better? I fly my Bee a lot too so I'll go for anything that will improve it.

Tom,
The Dave Brown 4" wheels are too big for the material that they are made of. There is too much unsupported foam for the tire. This was causing me two problems. First, the soft foam was acting like it was rolling in mud, creating drag that would make the plane flip over. Second, instead of just compressing, the foam would deflect to one side of the other. The tire was catching on the sides of the wheel pants and causing drag that would flip the plane.
Also the gee bee is too heavy for them. If you let the plane sit for even a minute, the wheels flat spot. So you then have this flat spot that will create drag.
The Sullivan Wheels are made of a much harder foam that won't deflect sideways, it rolls much easier, and it won't flat spot. I picked the 3.5" wheel because that is the size that the hobby shop had 2 of at the time. I would have preferred the 4" because that it is the specified size, but I havn't had any problems.

Thanks for the advice on the foam wheels. Mine flat spot too and I thought all foam wheels did that. I'll try some Sullivans!
