Yet Another Cub Takes flight ...
Another Cub takes to the air.... Highly modified Balsa USA 1/3 kit.
Wings clipped to 116"
100 cc gas engine
24 x 12 prop
32 lbs ( at least ! )
All structures beefed up due to high power.
I added a wing tube due to the way I fly ( hard )
It is a big *****cat really.... Slow flight no problem, lands like a dream.... big loops and super spins ......Oh, it will hold a knife just fine.... ( lots of input to hold....)
Yea, Yea, I know, not scale.. but it's not boring either ! lol
ps.. I didn't even see the hawk til somebody told me... second flight photo.

Love the hawk photo!!! That's one big cub you have there -- but then it looks like you've got plenty of space out there in Michigan. I think you have it right though: If you're going to build a Cub you might as well build it big! Here's a smaller cub here in Japan (not mine but a club members).

Hello IFLYRC-RCU: I like your Cub. As a matter of fact, I like most Cubs. I have self designed 1/3 scale J-3's and J-4's with G-62 engines - just right for the size. I think your 100 cc engine in a 1/3 scale with a reduced wingspan is a bit of overkill. It must fly more like a P-51 than a Cub.
You might like to see my new self-designed 40% J-3 that will see the air yet this month. It has a wingspan of just over 14 ft., and has a DA-100 for power. A 27 x 10 Mejzlik prop just arrived today. I drew ther plans for this one, and also have a complete instruction manual with 200 building photos. After it flies, I plan to take it to market for all those 100 cc engines that come out of the crashed Extras, Caps, etc. They will need a new home, and a BIG Cub just might be the answer.
Here are three photos of my fuselage sitting on the work-bench. The bench is 7 ft. long, so you can see the fuselage is close to nine feet long. No weight yet, but expect about 45 lbs.

Mr Messer ....
I thought mine was big ! Wow.. that 40% is huge !! I bet it will be super cool when it takes flight.
Keep us posted.
As for the way mine flies.. actually, I do have a throttle ( grin ) .. and it is mostly 1/3 to 1/2 for flying. I like it to look scale most of the time. Slow flight is no issue at all. I like doing slips and flat turns.
But I get comments all the time about how Cubs are "boring"... Well, let me tell ya, a clipped version is no slouch when it comes to stunts. Loooonnngg slow rolls ( with lots of rudder ) looks great. BIG loops are no problem. Slow rolling circle was pretty easy to do since it was in "slow" motion. Lots of comments on how well it flew.
An added bonus.. It's something different at the fly ins I attend... everybody has an Extra or Edge these days....

RE: Yet Another Cub Takes flight ...
Hey Jim, will we see it at the STARS Rally this year or does it exceed the the dimensions compatible with long distance hauling? I was wondering why Home Depot was out of fir 2X4's the last time I went to buy some! Not a too far fetched explanation? Wait to the guy from Iceland wants this one!
Seriously, what a project and hope to see it in person this summer. Looks great!
I have a Bob Nellits(?) 1/3 Cub short kit that has been kicking around my basement for years!
Always intended to do what IFLYRC has done and make a clip wing Hazel Sig version which up to this time I had not seen anyone do. But now, IFLYRC hs beaten me to the punch! OK, no more guilt for not building that one!
Nice work, IFLRC!

FLICKA5 ..
I'm not the first for sure.. I've got some video of the 2000 IMAA rally that has a guy flying a clipped 1/3 Cub. He flew it well and scale.
Bigger Cubs fly well.... your Bob Neitz cub is a fine kit btw. Very scale outlines. I've have now done several flights .. and the usual shakedown stuff.. you know, stuff loosining up, falling off..... etc. All fixed up now, ready to fly.
As for transportation issues.... the fuse is BIG ! Hard to take up and down the stairs.
I will be at the rally in Danville with this plane.. you going ??
Good Day.

Hi,
Here is mine Top Cub, a bit different to yours Clip Cub, in matter of power system..
My 14ft /53lbs goes with direct drive electric power, 26x102 Menz, 12,6ah lipolymer flight pack.
On-board aerotow video towing 17ft K-6: http://www.printechobby.fi/kauppa/ga...kahinaus2.mpeg
I guess your 100cc power is a bit more...
Br,
Hannu

PS: watched 60% of your video and wondered why the flaps weren't retracted after take off?
Or,is it necessary to keep them down until the sailplane is released?[sm=confused.gif][sm=confused.gif]

Nice stuff here guys.
Just wanted to say that I'm glad it wasn't in a "Cubs Only" section or I'd have never seen it.
Looking good!

Hi,
@flicka5, flaps where used to get better climb rate in this particular place/wind conditions,
first left turn to turbulent downwind was a bit tight, as we did not had that 100ccm gasoline "brutal power" available,
hold combo was 68lbs total, and vintage type glider on back "eats" a lot of power, we found with 10 deg flaps better.
if you happen to visit Helsinki, just drop mail, and lets go and see it flying!
BR,
Hannu
