Ps2727, Are the attached photos being viewed looking up from underneath the gear or from the top looking down?

I recently found out my dentist has a r182 tied down at the local airport. It looks like it hasn't been touched in years. Looking at it helped me to the to design the nose gear doors. I wish that I knew it was there before starting this project. We are still fairly close to scale. The elect motor is installed and its now time to complete this ARF and test fly the retractable gear set up.

Default 337 retracts

Hi Paul,
thanks for your help with clarification on your photos. I have a working prototype and thought you might like to see it in action.

I will put together some diagrams and photos to post (Perhaps a separate Thread). In the meantime here are a couple other Videos with Left Rear View, Rear view, and Front View.

Default cessna 337 Retracts

Still trying to finish up the build. Darn work is getting in th way. The nose gear has been more trouble than I originally thought but the Doors and Cowl Flaps (front and rear) didn't help any either - time wise. Made my own nose strut since nothing was available of the proper length (short) that had some shock action that had a scale look. Also modified the fuse to make it a P337H version (primarily windows).

I'm still planning on uploading some diagrams and photos. In the meantime here is a YouTube link to the current configuration. I added some sequencer programming to more closely render the speed and bobbling action of the full scale main gear during the retraction and extension cycle.

dkurtzkid:
Excellent work! Im trying to do a similar mod to a lancair IV model, yet only use springs to hold the doors close as in the full size. If you have any more info/pictures of your mechanism and geometry it would be very helpful for the rest of us inferiors!!

Awesome work on the prototypes, has any more progress been made?

Cessna 210N, did you ever get your plug and mold finished for the 210?

dkurtzkid, how did you get such scale movement out of the mains? It really looks like they free fall for a bit before being picked up. That's awesome.

Good progress on having retract for the mains available early next year. I have a second set made that I'm installing in a Cessna skylane 182RG I've scratch built. It's about the same size as the 337 (6ft span 12+ lbs). Plan is to have a consumer version of the Main Gear in two sizes for 12+ and 20+ lb Cessna models.

Regarding the retract motion, that is achieved using the DX-18 built in sequencer's proportional option. Not really necessary but it does a add an interesting touch.

I will have some pictures of the consumer version posted soon.

Great news, thanks for all of the hard work. I have been going to buy a set of electric retracts to reverse engineer the electronics, but I haven't had a chance to. What is your anticipated price for them when they go into production?

Trying to get the main gear for under 100 each, not counting servos. Currently using Hitec digital, 5245MG for the 12+lb size (76oz torque at 6.0v) and 5645MG for the 20+ Size (168oz torque at 6.0v) more than enough on the prototype in the 337. They can be programmed for up to 180deg rotation and still control speed. Normal retract servos are not adjustable for either speed or rotation amount.

By the way Nightflyer01, I've read posts from you and others dating back as long as 10 years ago with interest retracts for the various Cessnas. I enjoy twin engine RC scale flying and liked the Seagull 337 but couldn't get excited by the fixed gear. So I purchased the Seagull 337 to use as a test fixture, thinking that if I could figure a way to incorporate retracts I would complete the build. The gear I made for the 337 works in the other Cessnas as well, 172rg, 177rg, 182rg, and 210. The Mains were the only challenge. I'm using a standard Robart retract for the nose gear.

That's awesome. I have been working on them as well on and off for 10 years. I can get the geometry right, but can't figure out how to drive them. The digital servos sound like a good option too. However if you do produce them to sell, I would definitely buy a set.
