Keith,
I wound up selling the plane to a friend in the bones. He is going to finish it after his Ziroli P-47 is finsihed. I wound up building a 25% and 33% Waco and just didn't have the desire to wrap up the Stearman.
Post your build here and I will definetly watch.
Later!!

Anthony,
I think I've seen pictures of the Waco. Nice work! I'm glad the Stearman is still around.
I bought all the stuff from Ziroli..however the gear and the short kit are back ordered. Hopefully I'll be able to begin in a month or so. I'll use a G-62. It won't be a scale project.

I should have plenty of power because I have ordered one of the new RC Showcase 150cc radials.

Did you ever get your plane going. I'm curious to see if anyone has successfully installed a moki radial onto a ziroli 87" Stearman.

Would anyone happen to have some close up pictures of the Robart gear mount? I am not getting right now how I should be mounting the landing gear brackets and still have them easily enough removable. Did you install them with bolts and blind nuts? How do you access the bolts after you glue that plywood wing former section fs-3 in place?

I saw that. I was asking him in the comments section about his prop selection and how that motor and engine combo is working for him. He said he is using a 24x14 prop with good success. I might have to try that as well because ground clearance might be an issue.

RE: Ziroli 87
Does anyone remember the wing dihedral of this stearman? Specifically the top wing. Like a dummy, I went right into building the wing with a wing tube and made the top wing perfectly flat. I looked in the manual after the fact but it doesn't say anything about the top wing dihedral. It only says 1.5 degrees for the lower wing. Do you think I messed up?

Hey Davidgeorge212,
FWIW According to some pictures I have of a full size Stearman, there doesn't appear to be any dihedral in the top wing. Good luck with the remainder of your kit. The Stearman has been a favorite airplane of mine for quite some time.....
Take care,
David

Very difficult to tell if thee is dihedral from a picture. both wings are joined by a tube I suspect that the dihedral if any is controlled by the tube hole spacing.
There may only be dihedral on the lower wing as dthe other fellow suggests. Check the tube hole location on the ribs. Joe

I am working with a laser cut kit so the holes were cut in there already. Looking at the plans though, it spears the holes are all in the same spot. Even the bottom wing has the tube hole in the same location.

It has been so long ago that I framed up the Stearman I cannot remember for sure.
I think the top wing is flat. If you can find a good 3-view it can be easily verified. I kind of wish I had kept my Stearman now
I have framed up 3 Ziroli planes and sold 2 of them, I will finish my P-40.

Another thing is that, for the top wing, it only shows 1 rib pattern for all the ribs that the wing tube goes through.
I've seen a couple 3 views that show a flat top wing and a dihedral bottom.
I sent an email to ziroli plans with my question, maybe they can confirm it one way or the other.

It would be nice to revive this thread. I have all the stuff needed to start building the airframe, just received the short kit and acquired an Evolution E777 radial engine. This combination should be awesome.

Has been following this thread for quite sometimes now.
With a windchill minus 45 Celsius these day up the Great White North where I am at, time to do some serious building.
Got the fuz 70% done, and the top right panel 60 % done.
As to the diehedral , the top wing is flat, the bottom wing according to the 4-page construction manual that came with the plans, 7/8 inches at rib # W6, 3rd from the tip.
I am happy that I caught that, and will ensure that I incorporate such.

I have a AW Stearman and just bought a ASP 400 Radial for it. I bought it second hand with a G62 Zenhoa. I had to recover the fuz with oracover as the monocote started to delaminate.
All of this got me going and I am at the point to pull the trigger on one of the Ziroli planes and maybe the full wood kit. I cant make up my mind though. I like the fact that the 87" has split wings but on the other hand, if I do the 77" I have an engine for the plane. I am wondering if there is a possibility that I can build the latter with a split wing? Anyone with input, it will be appreciated. How scale are the Ziroli kits.
Will the ASP (Magnum) 400 be enough engine for the 87"?

Its been a while since I asked about the engine size for the Ziroli 87". I wanted to purchase a 77" but ended up buying the 87". I am busy building it now and have so many questions.
The spacers forming the crutch are in the way where I want to install the fuel tank. Can I remove one of those balsa spacers? I want to mount the tank on the CG.

Yes, I took out the spacer to make room for my fuel tank and have had no issues.
I have a DLA 64 inline twin in my 87" Stearman and fly it around at less than half throttle most of the time. Don't even use full throttle for takeoff unless it starts to get squirrely and I just want to get her off the ground. Had a DA-50 in it to start with and even that was more power than it needed.

That is great news! I am putting a UMS 125 5 cylinder radial on mine. I was looking at the 90cc, 7, but the diameter looks a bit small. I hope it is not to much power.
Thanks for your input. I really appreciate.
