Building a Bonanza

With challenging crosswinds at the RC field, I still decided to maiden my Bonanza. Both flights today, with the air gear in the down position, were successful. My initial concern about not having enough power was qucikly squashed as each 5 minute flight was power with the throttle at 1/2 - 3/4. While I am still getting use to how this plane flies, its glide path and landing were silky smooth. Each take-off and landing was completed with flaps given the crosswinds on the field. It has taken me over a year to build this plane and another 6 months before getting all the adjustments right and guts to fly it. What a GREAT DAY!!!

Congrats and nice work! I have a kit with retracts, cockpit and a fiberglass cowl I haven't even touched/opened yet (4 years old)... Your work inspires me to get moving, so thanks for that!
The TF kits are great, I built a TF Arrow a few years ago (in my gallery) and it flies very well.
BTW, I love the hatches for the switches!
Sweet work!

eh, just slightly! It has been terrible for me... thinking of moving on soon if they don't get it fixed...

It surprised me as well. I am still trying to dial this plane in - for example, when I put the flaps in position 1 and 2 modes, the plane wants to start "diving". I originally mixed down elevator with the flaps and have now taken that mix out to see if that helps.

RE: Building a Bonanza
Ron, Congratulations on the first flights. There was an addendum to change "down" to "up" on page 69 of the manual for flap/elevator mixing. I followed the recommendations with 1/32" up elevator at half flaps and 1/16" up elevator at full flaps. I also have my flap servos slowed down to 1.5 seconds. Transition is smooth with no tendency to balloon or dive. Try these changes and it should help.

Are you planning to program down into your elevator. I needed a good bit when flying my plane.

I actually changed the incidence on the tail by lowering F13 and raising F14 by 1/16". I may still need to have some down trim, but maybe not as much as the what would be required without the adjustment. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone going through the building process right now. I was just taking a guess and some measurements with the incidence meters. I have not test flown my Bonanza yet, so I may have way too much or way too little... I just don't know yet. I'll report back after the test flight(s). :0)

Interesting - I hope it works for you. Please post pictures of you plane and I am sure we all would like to admire.

Some mods I've done... I doubled the firewall below the engine mount. I increased the thickness of the nosegear supports from 1/8" lite to 1/2" aircraft ply. I added a battery box out there for the 4.7v Sub-C receiver pack. I added a 1/2" PVC pipe from the firewall to the bottom of the fuse to allow cooling air to escape. I attached the cabin top with 16 rare earth maginets instead of that goofy blind-nut / bolt setup that you can't reach.. I added 1/2" triangle stock to the Ruddervator servos to increase the strength of their attachemnts and I doubled all of the formers in the cockpit area since I'm going to add the interior kit. I extended the wing in the flap area to make it more scale like. Oh, yeah... the tail incidence thingy too.
The windows are only roughed in right now (Thanks Dave!) and I can't finish the paint on the cabin top, tail cone and cowl until the weather warms up.. it's just too cold to get a good paint job done.

I don't know just yet, actually I don't own a scale. I built the tail section as light as I safely could, and added as much "usuable stuff" to the nose as I could fit up there.
Another mod I forgot to mention is that I put the gear valve/servo/landing light switch and the strobe light capitor box in the center-section. The lights are forward of the spar and the retract gear is aft. When I attach the wing, I will have to make up three air line connections. (Up and Down to the nose gear and the connection to the volume tank.) The lights will require three connections (Power to the strobes/nav lights, connection to the tail and becon and the landing light). I could bypass the "Out to tail and becon lights connection" by using a y-harness between the switch and the wing. I might do that.... one less thing to connect when bolting on the wing. I just think trying to cram everything under the fuel tank might cause the steering servo or retract servo to jam with all that wiring and tubing shoehorned in there.

Interesting setup. I placed double air tanks in the fuse just aft of the wing trailing edge and the air valve, light harness in the fuse at the root edge of the wing saddle. The wing hook ups include:
- 2 air valves (right and left main gear) - The nose gear is permanently connected in the fuse
- Ailerons
- Flaps
- 3 wires for the wing lights

I put down in the elevate per your bonanza and still need more. Will adjust on my next flight and see how she perform. I normally don't fly at Nall, but might make an exception this year.

That would look very cool - still can't believe that you have 3 Bonanza's!
