oliver75, I am going to do the same thing as you just pointed out. I already have the 3/8 carbon tubing and the K&S brass tubing that slide over the carbon. The bottom wing was easy. I drilled 3/8 holes lengthwise in four small bass wood blocks. I put blocks under the wingtips, to create the required dihedral. 2.5" blocks was what the manual calls for. Then I epoxied the bass wood blocks in place and clamped them tight overnight. Now I have the perfect dihedral on the bottom wings. I still need to do the top wings, which is a little more tricky, since I have to relocate the holes some. The flying wires still will be needed for additional support, but are not a life safer anymore.

So, if I am not mistaken, you drilled new holes? Or you extend existing holes? Can you make me pictures?
In fact, with this solution (wing tube), my concerns is for the AFT wing tube, very low in the rib....

Read through the thread as a bed time story last night. Great work!!
Just finished the renovation of my old Pup. It has the G38 with reduction Gear and turns a very scale 32" wooden Prop.
It flies very scale, although the prop efficiency does kill some power but it beats the "usual" Props in looks by far.
The Video was done before the paintjob was finished but I had to use the good weather to get her in the air.

Did you by chance use the nice stainless canister from Toni Clark on your G38? I am considering retro fitting one to my Pup.. they are supposed to sound very good and add a few RPM's... I would love both for my own Pup. I do like the reduction.. but I admit I cringe listening to the stock muffler hiding the awesome prop noise the 32/18 makes.

The color looks very authentic something I have always been trying to get right on my pup. How heavy is your build...my pup came in heavy at 40 lbs.

thanks I live in the Alps and space is scarce here so we have to make do with an 8x85m Strip. Landings have to be spot on or you will be repairing something. Funny enough, I get really irritated when I fly at warbird meetings in Germany on their giant fields and sometimes need a second go to land...

I wanted to fit a Saito FG-84R3 with a normal prop but a friend urged me to go the Toni Clark way and use a scale size prop. So i treated myself to a really nice prop with an aluminium insert and I am very very happy with it. I am sure the Pup would perform much better with the Saito but the scale power is a challange to fly in itself and it really flies like you see it in the old movies. Apart from that, the prop just looks so much cooler in the air and it sounds great when it revs @ 3.400 rpm.

The color was quite a headache. I tried so many different colors but nothing seemed right. Either too light oder too dark and if the color was right you could only buy it in 14g tins.
In the end I gave up and went to a local crafts shop who mixes waterbased acrylic colors from colorcharts and ended up asking him for 1/2kg of RAL 7013 for €16.- thinking what the heck. It is a satin finish olive color used by the austrian army. I rolled it on and after drying was absolutely spot on PC-10!
The most important next thing is never to use white on a WWI plane. White was non existant in the 1910's. Roundels etc. must always be done in a shade of beige depending on the scale. You can go as far as RAL1014 and it still looks good.
My Pup with all the stitching and the other bells and whistles comes in at 34lb.

I have a friend that goes to the huge flyins that have every kind of large plane at them. He tells me he really isn't a Warbird kind of guy.. he flies BIG 3D planes... But when I fly the 1/3 Pup with the Toni Clark reduction he says.. That it is just so unique, and it stands out from what he sees at the shows.. he just stops and watches it the entire flight...
In fact most of my friends that fly huge 3D planes like the Pup quite a bit.

I am flying the pup at a big fly in in three weeks. Can't wait! I will be the only WWI Plane in the Air.

I have purchase an older BalsaUSA 1/3 Sopwith Pup... I am replacing the very old unknown engine with a DLE-55RA I happen to have on hand. I also ordered the plan and instructions book for the plane on last Tuesday and it has been shipped but not delivered as of this morning. I would like to install the motor this week end and need some help
1. What is the thrust angle to be set on the plane? (If any)
2. If anyone has a motor mount template showing the center of the firewall, it would be much appreciated.

On my last pup, I test flew then added right and down thrust and played with the balance point to fine tune it to my style of flying.
A starting point on thrust, in my opinion, 2 degrees down and 2 degrees right.....but much of this depends on the how the plane was built and what the wing and stab incidences are.
Or start at 0-0 and fine tune to your liking.
The point here is the Pup is a very forgiving model airplane and will fly very controllably at just about anything close to reasonable.
Don't be afraid to fly and fine tune as you get to know the plane ....... this could take a month or more, depending on how much you fly.
Looks like a nicely done Pup - hope you enjoy it.

I am a huge fan of bolt on stabilizers, this gives you additional ability to shim and tune ... it is also VERY handy for winter storage issues..as my Pup will not go in the basement without the stab coming off
