I think I am actually going to go to Toledo this year for the first time. Some of the guys in the club go every year and I am going to tag along to get some ideas.. who knows.. might even spend some money while I am there

Are you still flying your wildcat Carl?

That G80 twin is cool, but wow almost 7 pounds! and for the money you can put the DA 85 on it at 3 pounds less.. I have to tell you though, I am really drooling over that Saito 325 5 cylinder.. I wonder at 3.25 CI, would that be enough to pull a 30 pound aircraft? Makes no matter though because at $2000, I doubt it will be in the cowl of my wildcat anyway..

Nose weight is not a problem in this plane. My Saito 450 weighs 6 pounds. I was very careful about keeping the tail light and did not use any lead. I have a couple of Saito 325's, both purchased used. I have one in a 25 lb Jungmeister and its just enough for mild aerobatics. I would not use the 325 in a plane over 25 pounds unless the wing loading was light, maybe a high wing radial plane close to a Cub. I suspect the G-80 would be much smoother running. I know all singles are not vibrators but I have not seen one yet that does not try to shake the tail off.

I like the growl of the 450 at mid rpm better than the 325. Unless you are a great light builder the weight will be closer to 33lbs.

so the 450 will pull a 33 pound plane with no problems?

It will barely fit under the cowl but it pulls a 32lb Bates Wildcat around nicely. My plane could do fairly large loops from level flight. I prefer to fly as scale like as possible, I don't take off in 10 feet and no hovering.

I am very pleased with the match and my buddy BobH also likes it a lot also. He wants me to get a 1/4 Wildcat. Its just to big for my setup.
Have you checked out rcscalebuilder?

yes.. There is a ton of resources for me there too.. I am really excited about this whole project.. I would rather build than fly anyday. My flying skills are not up to the point to fly a warbird anyway, but by the time I get this done, maybe they will be.. I think I will take something from your experience and let somebody else maiden it for me. I read about your wreck and I felt really sick for you. I was glad to read you got it fixed so quickly.

What kind of wingspan does the 1/4 scale have? I bet it is huge.

Never a bad idea to have a great warbird pilot do the maiden. 1/4 scale is about 114" ws.

well the whole unemotionally attached to an airplane thing made a whole lot of sense to me. I think even if my skills were good enough I would be a mess on the controls trying to fly an airplane I just invested 3 grand and a couple of years time into. especially an airplane that has never flown before that may have trim issues or some other heart stopping emergency..

ya know something Carl, after looking at your pictures again and looking at it on thier website.. I may just say the heck with it and buy the Saito 450. Its only money and being divorced now, I don't have to ask for permission. Maybe I can find one at Toledo this year for a good price. I saw one on RC groups minus the warning light and glow system for $750.

It could be your down fall. I now have four radials, three used. Also the 450 sucks fuel fast making for short flights. Still life is better with them.

That was a Classic Glass made in the early eighties. Currently Jerry Bates has plans for the 1/5 scale model and a guy is importing a 1/4 scale from Europe. Currently I am repairing mind after a pilot error[:@]. I will be using a Dbalsa cockpit kit this time. You may want to look at www.rcscalebuilder.com in the Bates section for more info.

Hi,

Who is importing the one from Europe?
I would rather do the 1/5 scale and was looking for an ARF model from EMC or AMS but I guess that neither do that kit, probably because of the landing gear.

So I am considering the Jerry Bates plans. Does anyone make a glass fuselage for the Bates plans?

My AMA 16137 goes back to the fifties if that tells you how long I have been in R/C. My first radio was an ACE, now out of business, single pulse system.

Not currently. Robart and Century Jet make landing gear. Leo Spychalla makes a cowl and canopy. The Wildcat is a great flying plane. http://www.vogelsang-aeroscale.com/fischerwildcat.html offers a 1/4 Wildcat.

Hi,

Boy that is an impressive plane and not a bad price considering the detail.

Anyone having a Bates plan unfinished F-4F Wildcat laying around collecting dust I may be interested in rescueing it. I am looking for that deep winter project and just love that plane.
