Paint match for Cub Yellow Solartex?
Has anybody out there found a good paint match for Cub Yellow Solartex? Am building the Sig 1/5 scale and will be painting the struts and the cowl. Will be using a glow engine. Any info is appreciated...

RE: Paint match for Cub Yellow Solartex?
Hi...
Originally, I intended to really go hog-wild and convert the kit to an L-4. I chickened out because I didn't feel I had the skill to really do it right. I was reading posts in another forum and a couple of the guys are using latex. Seems that I can take a swatch of the cub yellow Solartex to Home Depot and they can match it exactly. I guess from what they say a coat of clear should make it fuel proof. I think I'll try it. Thanks for the tip on the Lustrecote because I'll pass on it for now...

You'll be looking for "fuel Proof paint". I'm not sure a paint store can give you that. No doubt they can match any color you want. Take a look at Stits paints (www.stits.com). They have several yellows. I'd trust the Cub Yellow they provide as being pretty close to correct. Not saying much for the true tone of Solartex.

For what you want its easy to mix your own paint from testor's model master paints. You can buy a yellow that is real close and the add red or blue to change it if needed. You might need some white and black too. In any case it will be darn close to the solar text paint.
The only problem I have with Home Depot paint is that I buy have to buy a quart of the stuff for each color match.
You can get Nelson's clear with the cross link to fuel proof your paints.

Well, then I know it works. I was thinking more of a quart size would be more than enough. I think if the latex is allowed to cure for at least a week, a couple of light coats of clear is supposed to make it fuel proof. Let us know how it goes. What size plane are you painting? Thanks foe the info, Edwin...

My problem with Stits would be that I don't have spray equipment so I'll have to brush it on. The cowl is the biggest piece but I wouldn't think that would be too hard. But I'm not sure because I've never tried it before. The other pieces will be the main struts, brass jury struts and the scale Robert landing gear.

You can brush latex on. Thin it down about 1/3 and use a FOAM brush. After it cures, clear coat with Ultracote clear or (shudder ) Lusterkote clear.
FWIW - Yellow (especially ) is not going to show it's true color unless it is painted over a white primer or silver (yes silver ) base coat.

Try the Testors #1114 yellow enamel in the 1/4 oz. jug. It'll set you back about $1.50 and should be pretty close. It brushes on pretty smooth with a quality brush and there's enough for 3 or 4 coats. I painted a quarter scale cowl and more with mine. If it needs tinting to match perfectly, ask an artist to help you out.

Solarlac, made by the same company is an enamel fuel proof paint. The solartex website suggests matches colour, and mixes required, to match the paint with their tex. Solarlac dark yellow is an exact match for cub yellow solartex, as I've finally found out after trying to match other paints. Best of all (in the UK anyway) it's about £5 for a 110ml tin, enough to do about 4 1/4 scale Cubs.

I don't see SolarTex as a listed color, but I have no doubt the color can be made. Great company... I use it on all my planes.
The red Cub is covered with SolarTex and painted with KlassKote. The green Cub is my 1/5th scale Sig Cub, covered in Solartex and painted with Nelson Hobby Paint.
I really did not like Nelson Hobby Paint when it was layered upon itself, but for one color it may work for you.
The 1/5th scale Sig Cub is probably my best flying Cubs. It is really light and flies excellent. I have so many flights on it I had to make ball bearing wheels for it. During an average flight it probably is running down the runway as much as it is flying, just love doing touch-n-goes with it. Mine is electric. The plane was completed in 2009 and still looks exactly as it did back then.

Take a 2" square of your Solartex and iron it on a piece of 1/16 ply so it's opaque, they cant scan it if it's too transparent, and go to Home Depot and for about 5 bucks you can have a sample tin mixed up (8oz) that will match your covering. Different batches of Solartex can vary in tone so use some from the roll you'll be covering the airplane with. Use white primer on your parts and two coats usually provide a match, the more coats you use the darker it will get so don't go crazy. You can fuel proof it if you're using glow power with Minwax satin polyureathane, which is a good thing to use to seal the entire aircraft with. Solartex is sealed and fuel proof as it comes but will get dirty if you don't use a clear coat. I just finished a 1/5 scale Cub for a friend with a Laser 70 and this is how it was done.
