Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along

RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along
On the original the covering fabric was sewn onto the fabric strip wrapped around the steel tubes. I suppose on a doped model, the dope would soak through and adhere to the wrappings. And I suppose even Solartex would bond well with fabric wrappings.

Hi Dave,
Like Don said, on the full scale wraping the framework with fabric strips made for
better adhesion for the doped covering.
And I beleave it worked the same way with the iron on covering. If I remember right
I cut the strips about 1/2 inch wide, overlapped about half the width and ironed it
as I went then went back over it lightly with the heat gun.
I think the covering stuck better to itself than it would have directly to the
hard wood dowels. Yes you can see the wrap detail under the covering.
Luckily I didn't have to add any nose weight, adjusting battery locations
did the trick for me.
How far are you along on yours?? You can post some pictures here if you like,
I like to keep up with how others are doing with their build.
Hope you're having lots of fun.

Thanks Guys,
Like doing the rib stitching, I'm really back and forth on wrapping the fuselage. Does it make a "nice touch" and really look good, or does it really need to show on a 1\3 scale model?
I'm all framed up and doing the cockpit area. mounting the tank, and am about to go down and do the fairing\guns infront of the cockpit. I ask about the weight Del because I'm thinking about putting a machine gun sound replicator in it and would be introducing about 3 pounds up front. I have mounted my elevator\rudder servos down behind the pilots seat in anticipation of this added weight, plus... I liked the idea of the direct run right to the servo with no pulleys or eyeletts. I'm looking for scale looks from the outside and don't need to do the inside(except for the cockpit area) as closely to the original as you did on your fine model.

I've considered the same question on my little 1/6 scale DrI. To wrap or not to wrap? In my case, I've thought of using strips of silkspan. But while it would be cool knowing it was there, it wouldn't show except for the tubing in the cockpit area. And since I promised myself I'd try to keep this build as light as possible, I guess I'll skip it on the rest of the fuselage. It's sort of like the question of whether to "prime" the fuselage or not. Sure, it looks great in barebones photos but ultimately it just adds weight.

Really, I guess wraping the longerons and the rib stiching would be a personal preferance
issue. You have to be within a few feet of the plane to see the wrapings under the covering,
but the rib stitching can be seen from quite a way off. Again, it's just how much you want
to get into detailing. The extra weight probably wouldn't be much of an issue, especially in
the 1/3 scale.
An extra 3 lbs. for the sound generator, (my plane is 35 lbs.) should not pose a problem
providing you have a strong engine (I have a 170cc twin gasser). It is more than enough
power.
I was able to move the radio equipment around to balance and didn't have to add any.

I have to say the wrapping of the LE, TE and the longerons is a MUST. I would do it if your using Solartex or Lien. On my GTM DVI I wrapped them with lien and covered the tail surfaces with Solartex, the finished produce looks cool and it sticks securly too.

Hey Dave, how's yours coming along?? How about some pictures. Just found
out two more 1/3 Dr.1's are in the air. Built by Barry Vogel and Paul Westrich
of the Ohio Dawn Patrol group. I'll try to get them to post some pictures. I think
they had them at Joe Nalls this year.
Keep building and having fun.

Hi Del,
Finished up the guns, ammo box and belts. Just finished the shroud and fuel guage... Boy was that FUN!...NOT! I did wrap my airframe in fabric because I found that the covering stuck better when you did that step. I think it will greatly strenghten the over all airframe. Not a lot of time to work on it because my mom is not doing too well health wise and I'm also working on my P-38 when I can. Haven't even been out flying yet this year.
I'll post some pics when I can. Thanks for your nudge.

RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along
Just a little update on my Dr.1
After the first, maybe half dozen flights I started having issues with
my engine (Roto 70 Twin). Very hard to start when cold.
It would not run consistant, started backfiring, the quit altogether.
Checked out EI Modual and was getting no spark what so ever.
(Battery was good, but switched to be sure).
Since RC Showcase went out of buisness there is no US distributor
anymore.
TroyBuilt bought out their other lines and invatory and in checking
with them they had a new ignition mod. in a box in the warehouse.
Thanks Mike for finding it for me.......
Anyhow, after replacing the mod. was able to get it running again, then
at the Ohio Dawn Patrol last one cylinder started cutting out then quit
altogether.
Put it away for a while, then started checking it out ane found out a plug
went bad........easy fix, got two new plugs, good hot spark on both.
Last weekend we must have spent two hours altogether trying to get it
started, (thanks for help Barry & Lloyd). It fired a few time but never started.
So I decided if I'm going to get to fly it at all this year I need an engine change.
Back in the winter I bought a good used GT80 twin with EI just in case I needed
to make a change. As of right now I'm in the middle of the swap, need to move the
firewall back about 5/8" but that will be no problem.
This plane is much too fun to fly (and pretty too) to leave setting in the shop.
Plan is to have it mounted and running by the end of the holiday weekend...........
I know, WinterHawk always says, remember Custer had a plan.

Hi Del, good luck on the engine swap, let us know how it comes out.
"remember, Custer had a plan"...
That DOES sound like something Lee would say!

Alright, engine change is complete, ran it up,
taxied around the yard for a while.
Sounds real good and very strong.
Will now see what it will take to refit the dummy
engine.
But first I think I'll celebrate with a beer that Lee
left in the frig.

Great news Del.
Looking forward to see how the new power plant is working for you.
Flew my 1/3 Pup the other day................now I have the WW1 bug again, and I think I need a triplane as part of my inventory. Your thread has been an inspiration, great work, and have enjoyed reading it over, and over again.

Great looking Pup Craig,
Hey, that WW1 bug is a good one to get bitten by
You definatly need a Dr. 1 in the stable, and if you choose
Glenns 1/3 I think you will be very pleased.
Fun build and flyer and don't like cross winds on take off
and landings. Most WW1's don't.
Let us know if you get one.

Del,
You, Paul and I should get out one night this week at our field and fly a couple sorties wit the Tripes. All three in the air will be an awesome sight.

Hey Barry,
Yes, that would be quite fun, not sure yet though,
I have the Dr.1 back in flyable condition (I think[sm=72_72.gif])
and now have to start on the DVII, you know, move the firewall,
install engine, darn, it's been so long since I've done that
The garage has been so hot even with the door open and fan
going, so this evening I cut a hole in the side wall and put in a
small air conditioner. Don't have the garage fully insulated yet,
but maybe it will help some.
Anyway, if we don't get it done this week, weekend after this for
sure. Maybe there will be another one or two to add to the mix.
Get busy on that DVI.
