RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along

My tip skids have been given a pretty good workout, have never broken one (yet). I personally have not had any
issues with the brass tab, I can see where it might.
What has happened with mine (more than once) there was more of a side load and kind of rolled the skid to the side
which bent the rear bracket, easily straighteded out and again nothing broke.
At this time I see know reason to do my next one any differant.

    You're making great progress Craig..............

Funny Abu Ijust got that dummy engine and in the process of install. You can buy the engine in two configs. The whole engine (wt = 2.5 lbs) or just four cylinder heads. Its solid sandable plastic and Ineeded to drill and dremel out to reduce wt under a pound. The mounting to air frame in front of gas engine is difficult but using a fhreaded coupling to gas enigne mounting bolts to extend a threaded rod for attachment did the trick. Also i got the busa guns done and that took a bit of time to finish. Now Ineed a pilot and no clue where to get one. Anyone have a 1/3 full body pilot they want to sell me?

RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along

Great pics Valleyk, thanks for posting them. Yes Del this does go fairly quick when I spend 5 hours a night in the basement

Worked on the outer wood struts. Managed to complete the bottom to mid wing struts this evening, lots of holes to drill and rivets to add.
First thing was to set them up properly. Using small bulldog clamps removed the strut from the brackets. Using them as my clamps drill a hole on each side if the strut. Issues with the holes aligning up exact are a problem if you bend them a little off. To remedy this, using a "T" pin I pushed it through the other side A small drop of med Ca and taped it into the hole. Did this for the first 3 rivets at the top, then alternated and got them all in. I peened them over as best I could on the other side. Happy with the way it turned out. I placed the nice rivet head facing in the outboard direction, easy to see as you look at the plane.
I then tapered the rear portion around the pin for a nice tight circle and fit.
I am happy with them. Tomorrow I will do the other 2 struts.

I've got virtually endless time, but I find I can't stay focused enough for more than a couple of hours "in the shop" at a time. Often I'll do some building or detailing in the morning when I get up before heading in to work and then maybe another hour in the afternoon. At night I usually spend a couple of hours. But a lot of time is spent just figuring out HOW to do something.

    No TV for me either.

I know exactly what you are saying.
Some mornings I do some things before work. If I am doing a fair bit of epoxy work, then it is good to have it cure when I am not around.
I spend lots of time pondering the best way to tackle certain things...........then out of the blue, the lightbulb comes on.
Then there are other times this thread has showed me some great ideas, a note, the cable set up for the ailerons. There are a few good ideas.
I was just going to go with a single cable to each aileron, then using a balance cable to run the whole length of the wing, tieing in the ailerons.
I do like the idea of a servo to each aileron independant from each other. A little bit of redundancy can be a good thing.

Hi Craig, I put two servos in because the original had two cables per aileron coming down into the fuse, and to get deferential aileron for adjustment. And you're right, there's allot of good ideas in this thread. Charlie

I like your set up. Looks like it would work pretty smooth, and the redundancy, by chance one servo craps out on you.

Tonight I finished the upper wooden struts. Gave them a quick spray of turquoise paint. They look great.
I hung them on the pins in reverse so they have a good place to dry.

RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along

Been a while since I have posted.
Bottom and mid wing are built, and covered with Koverall. 2 coats of polycrylic, first coat right out of the can, and the second slightly thinned with water.
I will apply a few more thinned coats after the fake rib stictching is done.
Interplane struts are done, and painted. Will do the cacle bracing after all is clearcoated. with the struts as you see in the picture, it is pretty solid.
Next is the construction of the ailerons, then the linkage fabrication. That should take a bit of fiddling around to get the set up I want. Then I can finish the top wing.

So much more to do, it is fun, when it starts to look like a DR1

The Koverall looks very good. Did you use it with Stix-it? Unfortunately, Stix-it is another of those flammable model supplies that makes it extremely difficult to have shipped or bring into Japan. [] I used to use BalsaLoc (and have in emergencies resorted to white glue). What will you use for the final fuel-proofing?

Yes, I used stix it. It worked very well for attaching the Koverall.
For fuel proofing I was just thinking on doing the landing gear area, engine firewall area, etc. I dont think I will need to do the whole plane. However might change my mind
Was just thinking on a few aerosol cans from Top Flite, they are easy, and work pretty good. My second option is Klasskote.

Last few nights I have been doing the ailerons. They are constructed, hinges are attached. Have not mounted them yet or completed a final sanding. I was not happy with the 1/8th aluminum tube for the outer ends. I was kicking around a few ideas, either make them up of laminated wood or wrap them with carbon fiber. I went with the carbon fiber wrap. I had a sheet of it, so I just removed the strips from the matted piece, wrapped it around the aluminum. Used thin CA to secure it to the aluminum. It turned out well. Willl post some pics tomorrow.

Hey Craig, you're moving along quite nicely..........

On mine I sprayed the whole plane with Min wax clear satin, have not had any issues of the fuel hurting the paint.

The carbon fiber wrap sounds like a great idea, I think I'll do that on my next one...........

RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along

    Del,
Great thread, I just re-read the entire thread again today. I am going to be building a 1/4 scale. I just sent Glenn an e-mail begging for the re-release of his 1/4 kit if not I will have to go with the Balsa USA. Anyhow I will be doing mine in the stock streaked camo pattern as you did on yours and I would really like to use latex. Do you have any eperience with latex and doing the streaking? I am asuming put down the tan base color and let it dry then thin the olive drab and start steaking. I think I will do all the streaking and then add the white fields and crosses and field markings.

Would love the 1/3 DR1 but I already have a 1/3 Waco and Cub taking up alot of storage space.
    Thanks!!

Thanks Anthony, glad you enjoyed the thread, it was a lot of fun doing it.

Yes, I have used latex on a couple 1/4 Dr.1s, it works just fine, accually it's faster as it dries fast and you can do all the
coats,(layers) in one day. However the glow fuel did start attacking the clear polly after a while, so you might want to check
    into something else to fuelproof.

The reason I went with the enamel on the 1/3, I figured it would hold up better with gas engines. So far so good.

I know Glenn told me he was going to rerelease the 1/4 Dr.1, but if he told me the time frame I'm afraid I forgot (ole guy memory thing).
I think it's going to go together simular to the 1/3 scale.

    Thanks Del,
I have a new DLE-30 in the box for the Fokker. I will be using gas and do not expect any issues with the latex. I used clear poly on my Waco and Cub and have not noticed any ill effects from gas. I just make sure I clean the planes as soon as I am finished flying.

I will wait and see what Glenn has to say before placing my order for the BUSA kit. I am afraid this is taking a back seat to the SE5a.
BTW: I live in the Cincinnati area, I live outside of Blanchester and work in BlueAsh. I may have to pay you guys a visit at the field one of these days.

I will also be using a latex enamel. Sample wing turned out great, as well as the landing gear wing.

After getting back from a bit of Christmas shoppping, decided to put one more wrapped layer of carbon fibre on the 1/8 aluminum tube for the ailerons. I think this will add some good strength, and the weight is next to nothing.

I placed the ailerons on the trailing edge, need to cut the aluminum tubing for the bolts before I can attach the aileron. That will come next when I get some more time.

That's not too far away, I live up near Oxford. My favorite field for WW1 flying is the Aero Modelers over at Harrison, (home of the Ohio Dawn Patrol).
Two grass runways, nice shaded grove along the flightlines. Nice bunch of WW1 guys also, (Barry paid me to say that )
I think they have open guest flying on Mondays.
