RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along
Just checked out your video.
Looks like vertical is not an issue with your DR1.
You commented that you took off at 1/4 power, that's pretty good @ 37 lbs.
I think the 62 should be fine for power, with the right propeller, and with scale flying it should be okay.
Looks good in the air, pretty aerobatic for a maiden flight

Mine came in at 35# and I have a GT80 in it with a 26-8 prop. That engine hauls it around very nice, takeoff around 3/4 throttle
and just driving it around in level flight at 1/2 throttle.
It balances at about 2 degrees nose heavy.

Del
I think the 62 will be fine with a 24 x 8 prop to start with. It did fly my pup around very well.
With the three under cambered wings, plenty of lift, there is however much more drag with this plane.
I even have a 26 x 8 prop that I could try after. The rpm's will be less however there will be more thrust.
Not looking for a rocket, more scale flying.

Craig,
Thanks for the help with the camo striping. You and Del both gave me the inspiration to give it a try. Here are a couple pics of my 1/4 DRI I am finishing up.
Later!!

Thanks,
Was a bit nerve racking masking and spraying the red over top of the streaking. I think the effect turned out good.

I found masking over the streaking went pretty good for me, have had a few issues with the white, nothing that cannot be touched up.
yours is looking good.
Here are a few pictures of my stenciling the other day.

The stenciling looks great.
Maybe one of these days I will go for a full bore scale build. For now I will watch.

Scale never ends.
Just need to find a point where enough is enough.
It's all the small stuff that takes time, and as long as you are happy with what you have done, then it's all good.
I think I will plug away at the top fuse cover over the mind wing. Have been procrastinating, with that part.
Still have a few months before a test flight will even be possible, so I am well ahead of schedule.

Some good progress on the front hood area.
Needed to build a structure to support the aluminum. Before I did that, I placed in some string where the strut support cables go, just to make sure I have the necessary clearance.
Put in the structure and have made a few cardboard templates.
Happy with the front portion so far. Now I need to transfer the cardboard template onto some aluminum, to make the piece, then secure it with some small button head screws.

Spent the majority of this evening working on the hood.
Lots of fidling around. I used the soap method for annealing the aluminum.
She looks pretty rough at the moment, still needs to be trimed down, and cleaned up. Need to add more small button head screws.
It has a few dents and dings in it, which should look pretty good when its all painted. I made the main hood part in 2 pieces, and still ned to clean up the centre line.

Got the aluminum decking all trimmed up.
Figured I would start working on the gun placement. Needed to remove some of the ammo chute to get the guns into position.
I will make a post system for mounting the guns, so when the wings come off, the guns will also be removed.
Took a few pictures as I align the guns, and just have a look before I dig in

Guns are mounted to the mid wing support plate.
Made a hardwood pedistal mount, and using medium CA, attached the pedistal to the plywood. I will go from the underside, and drill and pin it with a dowel for extra strength.
Before glueing the pedistal I drilled a hole in the gun mount flange, and through the hardwood, inserted a bolt. The guns are removable.
When the mid wing is removed the guns will come off, all in one piece. I still need to make the rear aluminum pieces as well as the rear gun mount pieces that will support the gun receiver group.

Still plugging away on the aluminum work.
Still needs some cleaning up, and trimming.
It all comes off as one unit, pretty happy with the way it has turned out so far, considering its my first attempt at metal work.
When it is all cleaned up, and a coat of metal etch primer, it should look alot better. Might be a little dented in a few spots, which should look pretty good.
Wow those are blurry [8D]

Installed the wire bracing, and primered the aluminum.
Turned out much better than I thought it would

The primer sure cleaned it up
Working on the ammo box.
Sealed the wood with some sanding sealer, and applied a few coats of primer.
It is all sanded down and rivets are installed.
Will paint it next with aluminum paint.

Aluminum paint is on.
Will let it sit and cure before I proceed with a coat of aluminum, buffable paint.
This will give me a good sheen when it is buffed.

I have been working on the magneto as well as the throttle quadrant.
Also removed the ammo box, and polished it with silver rub a buff. Gives it some depth.
I had some old belted 1/6th ammo that I placed inside the chutes just to have a look.

I'm checking every day the site, very very nice job.
What about wires behind magneto contact box? and pushroads on throttle?

The magneto wire, and pushrods have not been installed yet.
I will do all that when I complete the final installation of all the parts.
