Looking good, Alistair! Welcome to the world of the DR1 "chicken dance". That's what my Arkansas buddy calls it - he's been flying DR1s for 15 plus years.
When me and Billy T. flew with him we would make him land last because we knew he would end up on his nose in the middle of the runway.
Don't ya just love it when a plan comes together!
Congrats on a nicely done project and a successful maiden flight.

I found 1/3 scale GTM DR1 to fly very well and stable. In fact I have a Balsa USA 1/3 sopwith pup and the DR1 flies so much better. The problem is landing and its a big one. Fortunately you have grass to land on but black top you would have broke the prop scratched the cowl and sanded down the wing tips to a pulp. Anyone thinking of flying this plane on black top runways should think otherwise. Nice plane good power. BTW what servo did you use that got striped?

I had a 1/3 balsa usa pup with reduction gear and that flew beautifully. I wish i'd kept the reduction gear when I sold the pup. Would have been ideal for the DR1 !
Personally I like both pretty equally but the reduction gear does make a huge difference on scale flying.
it was a jr standard servo with 6v

I swing a 28 inch prop on a DA 100 and get near vertical performance. I don't understand these gear reduction drives...is it the sound or the scale size prop which is only four inches longer? Seems to me to be a very expensive route will little or no performance.

Vertical performance on a WW1 model just sounds wrong to me. It's all personal preference of course. The reduction gives lower revs but so much more presence. When I was selling my pup I did a video to demonstrate how ow well it flew and the reduction gear, 32" prop has a lot of 'oomph'. It's also very easy to start, I was stupid to sell it. To me it's how it sounds, looks, and performs seem so much more agreeable for this type of model.
all personal preference of course , there is no definitive answer.

I've enjoyed this Fokker 1/3 Scale Build-A-Long very much. What has happened to Glenn Torrence? I went to his web site to order a kit and all that is available is the new SE -5A. Has he discontinued making his kits?
Please let me know.
Thanks!

The best thing to do would be to email him and see if there is anything he can do for you. You have to understand that this is a tough business, and his products are very complicated. This creates much overhead, for few sales. Companies like GTM need as much of our support as we can give them, because they are seriously missed when they are gone.

Oh I don't know, Doc. For me, its kind of fun to reminisce and remember Del each time something is posted and sometimes it gives me a chance to go back and read some of the thread over again.
I know with each new post and each new discussion we get further and further away from the original content which was Del.......its a conundrum or sorts.
I miss Del here on RCU, but most of all I miss his presence at the various flying events.
I lift my glass in his honor.
Very respectfully,
Art

The kit is built with dowels.
I don't think Del's thread should be retired. I am aware that sadly Dell passed away. I feel so bad about the loss of a master builder. I followed his build-along of the 1/3 scale GTM Fokker DR1 almost every day. He was the main reason I purchased the kit. My failing health is the main reason I would like to sell it. Dell's building methods live on long past his untimely death.

I would like to talk about this kit, and the items included. I would look it up at the web site, but that is pointless. The web site has zero information since he is no longer selling kits. PM me or e-mail if you are ready. Thanks

See what happens when you decide to get the kit of your dreams? Your Daughter tells you that she is going to get married, and not later this year. But in two weeks. Doc, I hate to do this, but I have to back out of my offer. The money is just not going to stretch both ways. I know that you have not agreed to the deal yet, and nothing was set in stone. So I hope you can find another buyer for the kit. Life gets in the way sometimes.

Turtle Report:
Just a quick note here: I have temporarily inherited the proto-type 1/3 scale GTM Dr1 which was the subject of this build thread. I am supposed to rehab the model, get her flying again, fly her for a while (my determination on what a "while" is) and then return her to the current owner, Lee McDuffee ( Winterhawk here on RCU). The last time Del flew the DR1 was at the Dayton Dawn Patrol Rendezvous the year before his passing. Del had a "typical" triplane landing and nosed her over, damaging a wingtip or two and tweaking the fuse. Upon a cursory inspection it seems that several of the fuselage joints are broken loose among other items that need attention.
I will attempt to take some pictures and document my findings and actions that I take to make her flyable again.
Respectfully,
Art Shelton

King Arthur,
I hope you have as much enjoyment with Delberts DR1 as I had with his D7....
I know you and Lee will represent Del and his plane very well. You both love to fly and Delby LOVED to fly...a lot, you guys are great builders (good choice Lee... picking Art for the rebuild)
It will be great to see the DRI back in action!...can't wait! Good luck
Cheers,
HPA

Paul, I am very much looking forward to the flying part of this arrangement - I am comfortable there. Its the refurbishing part that will be challenging. I hope I can maintain the high standards that Del set for this build. Good friends are a part of modeling and I miss Del's presence at the field.
Thank you, my good friend, for your kind words and encouragement.

To Lee,
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to fly this model. (yeah, I know I have to fix it first!) I know it means a lot to you and represents a lot of memories and long time friendship with Del. I shall endeavor to treat her kindly. I am honored to have been chosen and will proceed with care.

I have been stripping it down - removing everything that I can unbolt. I am uncovering a bit more damage than I had anticipated. As I start to repair, I intend to shoot some pictures, add a few comments and tell a few stories (or let others tell some of their lies, er, uhh I mean stories).
I am trying to save all the covering so as not to change the outward appearance of Del's model. I will post some pics when I can.
