Yes they are. What are you doing for the cowl? I've been thinking about a fiberglass specialties one. The one i have now is from a friends re kitted 1/4 scale balsa usa cub. Also are going to build floats?. I have been thinking about some amphibious ones. Not sure how to put the wheels in them yet, i guess this why i like the hobby so much. Post some pics when you get your bird done I"d like see it. Mike

RE: SIG 1/4 Piper J-3 Cub -> PA-18 Super Cub conversion build
Hello all you Super Cub fans. I'm Joe from VA and I'm getting ready to do a BUSA or SIG J3 kit conversion using Fiber Glass Specialties Super Cub conversion cowl. My intentions are to use a McCulloch 28cc gas engine that I've converted from a gas blower. I'm impressed with the engine. I'm turning a 16-8 Master prop on the bench 8400 rpm using the stock magneto/ignition and Walbro carb. I did modify the muffler slightly installing two 3" stacks vertically. The stacks will be on the bottom when mounted on the plane as I intend to invert the engine. My intention here is to introduce myself and to solicit any help and advice you guys care to share as you've already walked the walk. Thanks in advance for listening and I look forward to sharing my Super Cub experience. Incidentally, the reason I'm not just building a J3 is that I am a pilot that solo'd in a 150 Super Cub and have about 800 hours in the plane. I wish someone would pick up Ikon/Northwest's patterns and make a Super Cub kit. Talk to ya'll later!
Joe

The red and white cub in the pictures isa beautiful job, and really nice. However, it is not a Super Cub. For those of you that want a SuperCub, or a Super Cruiser buy plans for one or a kit. There are several out there, and it is the way to go. WHY? The Super Cub,while itlooks like a J-3, is a completely different airframe. The nose is longer, the fuselage is wider, the moments are different, and the landing gear is in a different location. The longerons, and stringers are different on the Super cub, and even the tail feathers are different, although it may be difficult to tell at first glance.
Take a trip to a local airport and look at some if possible.Problem it, that the large portion of Super Cubs are in Alaska, according to registrations. There are lots of good photos on the net, and if you can find some accurate 3-views, you can compare them. If they are the same scale, print them out, and hold them together, over the window, and you will see the lines do not match. If they do then you do not have the correct 3-views. There are 3-views on the net that are called Super Cub, but are not. They are really L-19,the military version, and way different than a civilian Super Cub. Also the Super Cub could be had without flaps.
It all depends if you want a scale plane, or can be satisfied with a "sort of scale" plane.
