This is a WACO SRE from MAN plans. Enlarged from 72" to 80" span, weighs 14 lbs. and has flaps. It has a converted Homelite 25cc leafblower engine with the larger carb from Carrprecision, 18-6 prop, Hitec radio. Covered with Coverite and painted with Rustoleum from spray cans. Goldberg trim tape for pinstriping. This plane has many, many flights on it over several years.

Great looking Waco Jim. Of course, if it's a Waco, it can't be anything else but great looking, can it? I have these plans too, and now that I've seen yours, blowing them up is definitely the way to go. That would appear to be a picture of your airplane on the Carr Precision site. I take it that you're happy with the Homelite conversion?
I'm a Waco fan too and I've got a 1/4 scale Taperwing ready for paint, and plans for a 1/4 VKS-6 in the plans bin, waiting to get built. You know.....with all the others that I'll never live long enough to build!

Cheers, Nigel

Nigel,

I'm very happy with my Homelite conversions. I have them in three planes now and I'm putting one in a BUSA Triplane. The 25cc ones are great once you put the bigger carb on them. They're kind of heavy, but that works out great for a plane with a shortish nose. They start very easy by hand and run smooth. Guys are always surprised when they find out what engine is in the WACO after seeing how well it hauls it around. No 3D but it'll do basic aerobatics just fine.

The last engine I converted was a Homelite 33cc out of a 14" chainsaw ($109) and it's even better than the 25s out of weedwhackers and leafblowers. It's also cheaper to convert because it already comes with the bigger carb. The mounting is different because there's no backplate. It's going in the triplane.

I was thinking about doing a WACO UPF7 in 1/4 scale but after building the triplane I don't want to do any planes with multiple wings for a while. The Taperwing is a cool plane. I know exactly what you mean about not living long enough to build all the planes you want to.

SDCrashmaster,
Outstanding job! You belong at Scalemasters or TopGun, if you haven't already been there.

I have Photoshop but I don't know how to blend photos like you did. I'll have to read up and play with it some more.

monocoupe,
I looked at your taperwing in the gallery. It's going to be awesome! Can't wait to see pics of it finished.

Just wondering why some of you chose the method of attaching the antenna to the fin. If it is a scale plane dont you want to hide it like put it in the fuse?

I'll go out on a limb here, and say that I believe what Jerry meant was that the real, full size Islander has a real, full size "wire type", low frequency antenna, that is strung between two points, so it therefore made sense to him that he should duplicate this scale detail on his model by putting the reciever antenna in the same place. The low frequency referred to has nothing to do with our model frequencies.

Jerry, please jump in here and correct me if my effort to clarify the situation is incorrect!

This model was built from a Jack Stafford kit 15 years ago. He is no longer producing kits but sometimes you can still find a kit for sale on these and other boards.
