Great photos! Please post more close ups! Also I'd love to hear about about how the model flies. I don't know anything about what makes a good or bad CL model.

Those of us who were paying for motel rooms were very happy to get things done a day early. If contest management had not thought it up on their own, I would have suggested it. In my opinion it was a very well run contest and the low R/C turnout had nothing to do with how C/L was run. There were 10 C/L competitors and 9 of them flew (12 entries, 2 no shows). I know that the contest announcement mentioned four rounds, but FAI rules specify three. Nobody complained when it was discussed at the opening pilot's meeting. As far as second guessing the wind conditions, I would count Friday as a nice calm day in Muncie and was glad we were flying. I got my highest flight score on Saturday--it was the fifth highest of the event.

My thanks to the judges (who were probably paying a chunk of their own expenses, too), the sponsors, and the organizers who made this contest possible for the vast majority of us who enjoyed it immensely.

Sorry about the plane, but it sounds like that was small beans compaired to the run of the contest. If they are going to field a team they need to run it professionaly or go back to making the team out of the Nats field. It might be why most dont consider going anymore. As for being a liability for the team with wind and such, NA! you cant builld the perfect contest plane because they would all be the same in the end.

I messed up and want to know if I can fix it. I went off on some guys over a contest and am ending an otherwise fine thread on a negative note. Since my comments (and the ones following) about the contest are off subject, I would like to know if they can be deleted, starting with #600 to end. Thanks for your help.

Hi Don. I think I’ll take your advice. I have a couple of shots that Mark took in flight.
My next project will be relatively easy. I have an old Stinson Reliant that was heading to the dumpster that I want to resurrect. I’ll start a new thread for that. My next big project will be a 1/3 scale SE5a for R/C. This plane is just too small and light to handle anything but calm weather. Besides, I want to build one that has everything work. (Well, almost everything). I think the Reliant will take a couple of months, so I’ll start “Big Bird” after the holidays.

PS You and Bob have both been neglecting your Sopwiths long enough. Get back to work!

Steve !!!

Guess what I just seen in the February 2008 Volume 34 Model Aviation Magazine ???

I'll give you just one guess...

It is on page 27 & 29 and it got First Place !!!!!

But if you ask me there isnt another place for it so the prize should have been for "The Place" !!!!

Congratulations !!!

Seeya, Tim

Hi Tim. Thanks for the heads up. I haven't got mine yet, but it will be nice to see her in print.
I've just about finished the repairs. The damages were more extensive than I thought at first. But she's as good as new. Actually, better, since I finished some details I had left out and corrected a couple of errors. Now I'm just waiting for SPRING!

Thanks Mode One.
I’ve made a couple of improvements to the nose area.
First, when I made the radiator, I made a mistake on the shape of the top. I had to redo it for the top engine cowl to work, but by then I had already made the louvers and they were too tall. The bottoms were damaged in the nose over, so I went ahead and shortened them to the proper height and lowered them. Now the right amount of radiator core shows at the top.
Second, was the scale prop. The three views show the trailing edge to be straight. The photos show that there’s a curve at the hub. This curve is needed for the prop to clear the synchronizer pump gear. Also I wanted a laminated prop since the full scale props are laminated. So I took off the thrust washer and made a new prop to the proper shape. I remounted the synchronizer pump back to the scale location, so now there’s a safe clearance for the flying prop.
Finally, I decided to go with the fairings over the bungee cords on the landing gear. I made a small Vac-U-Form box and carved plugs for the top and bottom pieces out of balsa. I pressed the rivets with the dies I used on the metal parts. They worked fine on the plastic. Cutting the top piece to shape was a real chore. It took several attempts to get it right. This has to be the most complicated piece on the whole aircraft!

Oh, thank God for more updates! Seriously, I been in withdrawal. Outstanding work as always -- and the prop looks great! The depth of the detailing on your model is just stunning. Few WWI models ever get the full treatment they deserve.

I had forgotten that you used a punch and die method on your rivets. I just placed the aluminum sheet on top of an piece of steel and banged away. It looks ok but not as crisp as with the die.

OK Don. Here's your "fix" for today
I finished the bungee fairings today. I really like the vac u form. I can see a lot of formed parts in the future.
