Some of these pictures have been enlarged soo much that they have lost their depth of field.

>> Some of these pictures have been enlarged soo much that they have lost their depth of field. Try to remeber that you are trying to make a model look like a real plane. Part of that is to put it in perspective with the real world... <<
Enlarging has no effect on depth of field. It's related to the lense aperature and focus only, and is determined at the moment the photo is taken, film or digital.
To get expanded depth of field you have to close down on the lens opening, and adjust the exposure time to compensate for the smaller lens opening. That can lead to blurred photos, especially with longer lenses. My guess is the the Dawn Patrol shots where taken with a lens that was at least a 250mm, a reasonably high shutter speed to keep the image of a moving relatively distant moving object nice and sharp. Tough to get large DOF with that combo.
Besides, with the background out of focus one's eye is immediately drawn to the aircraft (no sharp, in-focus background clutter. I thought the pictures were exceptional.

I mean that because the photographs (Stevos)are cropped\tight\enlarged ect... they are uninteresting. There is no point of referance(not even rule of thirds), nothing makes me say "neat shot", nothing that makes me think "is it a model'?
All the guess work has been taken out of them.
Good shots... But uninteresting

That's what I thought he meant.
After a long career in art and design, including college level courses in Art Photography (Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind were my instructors) I will say that such "rules" are for the amateur.
There are no rules in art.

Hey Phil,
I like your head-on jet but the crispness of the model makes me pause. Just a thought - if you take the same head-on shot from a distance, and with a moderate telephoto lens, you'll end up with more of the foreground and background in focus, loosing some of the contrast in focus and possibly add some realism.
Keep up the good work!
Vern

If you had a career in art/design, not to mention courses in photography, you should know what the photographers "rule of thirds" is, be it amateur or professional.

I've worked with art and design professionally for 30 odd years.
Rule of thirds? Doesn't bother me. Some great shots here. Close crop just adds to the dynamics.
This thread has gone on for so many years there a chance that it stagnates, same type of (chocolate box) picture over and over again, it's great to see a new fresh approach.
Go for it.

RE: Best scale photo!
I have been an ametuer/hobbyist photographer most of my adult life. I have completed a number of instructional photography courses which haved guided much of my attempt to produce quality images. I'm making no claims as to my expertise here, but do feel qualified to register my opinion about this thread. This is a compilation of (hopefully realistic) photograhs of model aircraft, NOT a contest of technical photographic achievement. Chill out and enjoy the efforts of these contributers, their work is quite good, if not always perfect.........John

I don't know if it's because of the advances in digital cam' technology but the quality of the flying shots has increased dramatically recently.
That Spit piccy from jran is another rock solid capture.

RC74...are you kidding me? Are you REALLY so completely unaware of what this thread is about?
Especially since the guidelines were updated just several posts before yours?
