Modelers in or near Seattle or Ottawa -- little help?
I'm desperately trying to find some solid information on the shape of the top cowl on the Sopwith Snipe and there's a replica in both the Canadian Air Museum in Ottawa and the Museum of Flight in Seattle. Are there any modelers here from those areas who might be able to have a look? Or maybe you've already gone and have some photos.

I am suprised you have not received any help on this. However when I last visited the Seattle museum a lot of the planes were hung from the roof and it was not easy to get photos closeup. The entrance fee has become very expensive this year, but it is a very worthwhile museum especially the re-creation of the original workshops.

Thanks for the reply. I did sent the museum an email but have yet to recieve a reply. I guess if I were to think of making a trip, it would be wise to get on the phone first and find out how the Snipe is displayed.

Why not try making the same request on the scale forum at www.rccanada.ca . You might have better luck at finding someone in the Ottawa area. I am 2 1/2 hours north of Seattle so I can't help you at the moment, though I have been to the Museum of Flight many times.

I have some other shots but the Snipe wasn't what I went to the museum to shoot photos of. I have the underside in half meg files. They'd have to be resized inorder for them to fit.

Mac49, thanks a million for that photo! The great thing about Photoshop is that it can bring almost any photo back to life!
Even though it just shows the side edge of the cowl this is still informative. Plus there's all the OTHER detail to look at.
Thanks again!

Don,
The museum has all of its photo collection online with an excellent search engine. The following link should keep you busy for a long time [8D]! Click on search under imagebank, then type in snipe for aircraft.

Thanks for that suggestion. However, I already rifled through all of those photos. Amazingly, none actually shows a clear view of the upper cowling. But there are lots and lots of very useful photos in this archive and I've also ready referred to them when working on the rudder and tail skid for example.
I just wish I could find ONE clean shot of the top cowl from either the front or the cockpit.

Hopefully the ones I've tried to upload are there. Windsock has a good datafile on the snipe and Replicraft has an excellent set of 1/5 scale drawings. I've purchased his SE5A and Fokker D7 for a retirement project.

Thanks for those. I hadn't seen the Pegasus model before. It's sad really that the best reference photo I can find (and I've spend a LOT of time looking on the net) is of a 1/72 scale model.

Mac, thanks again for these photos! They will be a tremendous help. Of course, I already have the datafile. I really should have purchased the Replicraft plans at the beginning of my project but now that I'm nearer the end than the beginning I hate to have to spend the money.
Besides, I'd probably just get depressed about all the scale detail I've left out!
