Race Plane Pilot Info Needed
Looking for pics of pilots from the the post-war ('46-'48) Thompson Trophy races. I have looked through the pics on Warbird Aero Press, but there does not seem to be any pics of the pilots. Looking see just what they would have worn in a race. What type of helmet, etc.
Thanks
Thanks

Jim, thanks for the link, it pretty interesting. I am looking for the post WWII pilots. Specifically the Warbird pilots. I am building a P-39 into "Cobra II" and need a pilot. I am assuming they would generally be dressed in WWII flight suits , helmets and goggles, without any Mae West, or oxygen mask, but not sure of that.

Hi Terry,
The only one I can help you with as a 12" P-51 pilot from 21st Century, but mine are lightweight conversioins with an r/c head option.
Have a look at the web site to see them in action (www.scaleaircrewsupplies.co.uk) and remember to turn the volume up!.
I have attached the P-51 pilot data sheet for you.
The price will be a bit steep for you in the USA, but these are very rare now, and difficult to come by, and certainly the only lightweight and r/c versions available anywhere.
cheers
Mark

I have the old Excalibur III p-51 book form the Smithsonian and from it it looks like they were wearing "summer" flight jump suits some times with a shirt and tie underneath. The planes did have heaters and the pilots would just come down if they were having a problem instead of keeping altitude for defence like in the war.

Hi TFF,
This one has shirt and tie on under the flight jacket. I guess at high altitude over europe (bomber escort), they might have used the leather jackets occassionally just in case theyhad to bail out (not likely but always possible)?
I can get a flight suite but it will need a little dying as it is a blue Russian tank mechanic's!
cheers

Well I finally found a picture that answers my question. this is a pic of jack Woolams in "Cobra I", the sister ship to the one I am building. Looks like he is wearing a leather jacket, slacks, & one of those old style football helmets.
And thanks for all the good links posted.
