RE: Who wants to build Lockheed Orion 9
Thanks AeroMuseumServices I was up all night looking for the article which is in number 87 of "Take Off" by aerospace publishing ltd, publishdate 1990.
It was Northwest Airways inc. U.S. Airmail-Express Passenger Servicethat bought three Orionsin 1934,the text reads as such ( their all-wooden construction was bareley suitable for the hard weather encountered on the northern routes, and the pilots complained that the manually operated undercarriage was "perfect for building right arm biceps."
I am glad you replied, as it was many years ago i read the article and the mind does fog over, so I do stand corrected and also delighted to read the article again.

RE: Who wants to build Lockheed Orion 9
Hello All,
The solid model of the plane is coming along fine. It will be 1/5 scale.
Still no luck finding a good retract match for this plane.
I am very encouraged, however, at the increase in choices for electric retracts for large scale models.
When I start the build thread it will be a self-moderated thread (this one is not).
The reasons for that are obvious if you frequent build threads.
Ther are at least two other popular sites that I have found that allow a good platform for moderated threads for building.
When I start the build I will leave a link at this thread.

Yes, I am still designing this lockheed orion 9D
No, I have not abandoned this thread
Its just that designing this model takes some time.
It is a 1/5 scale and will have a DLE 50 that I bought for it.
I have the fuselage, tailfeatures, and cowl almost ready for laser cutting.
Just getting all the parts into a layout for the laser cutter will probably take me a month.
I figure I will start building all those sections next winter.
In the meantime I have to do the design of the wing and retracts.
The retracts I decided to use are Sierra for the 1/5 hawker hurricane. I got a set. Very spendy.
The wing and gear layout of the hurricane are very close to what the orion had (geometry wise). I bought the plans for the 1/5 hurricane, so that will help me.
But I will have to lengthen the legs a tad.
Anyway, that is where I am on all this

I so glad to hear you are still at it! This thread led me to consider building an Orion instead of Howard or a Lockheed Vega. Any chance you will offer a pdf of your finished design in a 1/6th scale size? A 1/5th scale with a 102" wingspan is a little larger than my build area and mode of transportation to handle.

That may be a couple years away.
After its built, and I'm happy wit the way it fly's, I will make some prints.
They will be scratch build prints, so you could just have a kit cutter (or your local print shop) scale the prints to whatever size you want. They would probably be the same price as other prints, 50 bucks.
At some point I will just donate the prints (the copyright) to a kitcutter of my choice so that the design stays in the marketplace after I'm gone.
My contribution to the hobby.
I have noted that plans that are owned by kitcutters or design houses typically are not being pirated on ebay. I don't mind giving it away to a business in the hobby, but having it stole by those not in the hobby to make money is a different matter.
Oh, I did do a Howard (pictured). I bashed the daylights out of an arf to get it to look right.
The build (modify) thread is here.

I sent my files (below) to several laser cutters for quotes.
Amazingly, only two got back with quotes.
I sent my files To Pat Fallacaro at Laser Cut USA.
Good price, good communication, excellent work, fast turnaround.
I think it is important to let people know about good sources for work

Sounds good! Did you try Limey Bob over at Laser Design Services? I purchased one of his existing designs the 86" WS Caddell Bonanza A36 and he had a quick turn around. Hi site: http://store.laser-design-services.com/

It is a work in progress
I am getting there. I hope to have it it in the air by spring of 2019.
There is a lot of work in this. ( I only build from November to April)
I have a zillion build pictures as well as the prints and bill of materials done.
At some point I will do a build thread, or most likely a web site because I want to offer the prints and a short kit at some point.
