1/2 Scale Fokker D-8

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
All men are color-blind compared to women! Seriously, in linguistics studies, women typically use twice as many color terms as men. How many of you guys out there would describe something as mauve or lavender?
As far as the color on the pipes, they do look a bit shiny on my monitor. I'd rummage around in the kitchen for a copper-bottomed pan -- one that's been used for years -- and base the color on that.

Tom,
FWIW, here's a pic of the Oberursel at the USAF Museum--I think the intake pipes were steel on the UR2 and copper on the LeRhones. Notice I said I THINK! Anyone else recall?
Still, though, your work is lookin' mighty fine! Maybe you should just leave it as is--it really looks ok.
Later, Lyle

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Tom; Me......Jack. Once you weather the engine and dirty it up a little ....wait...a dirty engine in a tkfokker Fokker..better think of something else. When the copper first gets hot it's all over, you know, with the multi-colored burnt orange and burnt blue and dark brown, so to keep it copper colored you would have to polish it when the engine was shut off. Now it looks like the ur-2 had steel ,not copper. How did you miss that one?? I say check out the history, if they were steel then great...add a little rust. Best to you,Beth and the boys. Jack

Hi Guys, Thankyou to everyone who responded to my color of the tubes. I guess being color blind can be a pain in the butt at times. You should see me try to mix colors!!!! I feel kinda stupid on the fact that I did not remmember about what Lyle pointed out about the steel verses the copper on the tubes. I guess if they were all steel on the german engines I would have to repaint them. I will try to reshearch this futher before I do. Again Thanks to ALL of you for your intrest and help!!!! Tom

Holy Cow! How many of you out there are color-blind? I am color-blind as well but from what I can tell they look good to me!

Tom, just follow the golden rule of "the wife is always right" and you'll be fine! Excellent work by the way.
p.s. If a man has an opinion, and his wife isn't there to hear it, is he still wrong?
Cheers,
Cam (Optometrist, obviously!)

Stachel,
I am going on memory here but I think I remember reading somewhere that Oberursel intake pipes were copper but then were changed to steel.
I do not know when this change took place, however.

Jtisch, You know i'll probably just leave them. I will however dull them up a bit. It's really not critical here, you relize this aircraft is only a fun flyer. If it were my half scale or something I would be using for T.G. or one of the other competitions then I'd be more concerned. This model dosen't even have a scale cockpit! I must say I really em leaning towards maybe a new 1/3 full blown scale D-8 for my next project after I finish or during the construction of the 1/2 scale. I need something to compete with. If I did I would most likely put a Toni Clark belt drive in it. Or a Mick Reves. I have to have a scale prop on the next one. Well back to the shop. Tom

Well I think this Fokker is ready for Rhinebeck. I'm satisfied with the added details. I'm happy with the way it flys, even though it is a heavy one at 40lbs. The G-62 does fly it fine on a calm day. There really is not any extra engine to get out of trouble with, so the intentional horse'n around will not happen with this aircraft. Now I will check the Morane A-1 over for Rhinebeck, and the 1/2 scale will get a few more add ons and that will be it for Rhinebeck and Dayton. Tom

Argh! Yet another wonderful modeling event I won't be making it to. [:@]
You've done a great job "sprucing up" this "fun scale" model. I'm sure it'll be a crowd pleaser. As far as the tubes being copper or steel, well, they often reused captured LeRhones anyway so just make up a good story.

The 1/3 scale has become a great model Tom even it is off-scale in your opinion.
The engine really looking good, it's a need for such a model. Did you had a change to get the wing and stab incidence measurements?

Today I took the Fokker out side to run up the engine to be sure everything held together on the dummy engine while the real engine was running. Also I was concerned about overheating seeing the dummy engine would change the airflow, on the ground that is. Up in the air there should not be a problem, hopefully!!! I also took the chance to get some more photo's of it out side with the new dummy engine installed. So I guess she's already for Rhinebeck Aerodrome!!!!! I gotta tell you guys, I've been going there for over twenty 23 yrs. and I still get so excited about going to this event, I love that place. I plan on taking alot of photo's this yr. and posting them for the unfortunate ones who can not attend the event. Tom

Teus, Hi here are some measurements from my plane. Leading edge of wing to longeron,5 -1/4, trailing edge furthest point to longeron 5- 7/8. The stab is from top of cut out of horizontal to bottom longeron is 7- 5/16 The measurement on the photo on the stab is for the furhest points of the stab, not at the cut out point. The very end of stab. to bottom longeron, 5-5/8 These measurements are for the Ron Weiss plans. I hope this will help some what. The plans you are using should have this info. Who's plans are you using. I noticed that I need to add some down thrust in my engine to get my elevator to trim out correctly. That is something I will do after the flying season is over. Good luck, Tom

Thanks Tom for your measurements, great info for me.
I am using the philip Drew drawings as a guide and draw my own drawings in the scale i'm using, 1:3.5.
Thanks again,
Teus

Hi Guys, Getting ready for the Rhinebeck show I always go thru the aircraft I'd be bringing. Being sure the plane is safe to fly at such an event. Here are a few pic's of my 1/3 scale Morane S. A-1 It has a Quadra 75 mounted in her, swinging a 27-8 prop. This model has been flying since the kit first came out in the 80's, so you can say she's getting to be an old hag! And looking like one too! Here is the buisness end of things on her. Just some thing to post as I am trying to keep my posts alive. Hope you guys enjoy, Tom

Tom,
I have been lurking around and not saying much but wanted to let you know I am enjoying your posts. I have the Balsa USA Pup and the Morane in the queue so I really liked the Morane photos. If you have some more of them please post them too.
Can't make it to Rhinebeck but I am going to Dayton but just to fly the digital camera, hope to see your planes there.
Thanks again!
Cliff

Hi Dave, Thanks for jumping in, I love talking to new people. The D-8 has a 24-8 zinger on her. The engine is a g-62. I'm not sure on the rpm's, I really never concern myself with that stuff. I try to get the biggest props I can on a WW-1 aircraft that the engine will let me. Usually I don't have much of a rpm change from 1/2 throttle to full!!! Crazy I guess but these planes don't require alot of rpm's to get them to fly. They do love big props. Please look me up at ORA, I'll be with Glenn Torrance. Nice talking with ya, Tom

Hi Cliff, I'm glad you said hi, I just love my Morane. It's old and ugly. The dirtyer I get it from use the better it looks. The guys always get a kick out of how real it looks in the air. It's a great flyer. Fast and a little difficult to land. I do flip it over on landing every once in a while. If you look back in my posts there are some photo's of her earlier this summer when I flew it at a local fun fly.I also have a balsa USA pup that I've been flying since 1990. She too is getting well worn and weathered. Thanks for jumping in always great to here from different people. See you at Dayton, please look me up, I'll be with Glenn Torrance. Have a great day, Tom

CarrearaGTSCS, Thanks, You need to relize that Rhinebeck Aerodrome is nothing like it used to be 15, 20 yrs. ago. Unfortunatly it has changed not for the better, The people running it now just don't understand Cole Palens dream. It is very sad to see so many good people who were there gone. I still very much enjoy being there don't get me wrong. It just is not the same place it was when Ken Cassens, Dave King, The late Richard King, Tom Polipink, Brian Coughlin, Dan Taylor, Karl Erickson, Gene DeMarco ( when he was behaving himself), Or the joy to see Rita Palen and her sister Marion Weidner in the souvenir shop. I hope to see Bill King still there flying his Tiger Moth. Stanley Segalla still does his cub routine. People like John Barker who has been gone for a while now. Plus the numerous people I can't name who gave there free time in the shows ground crew. I don't think they even have anyone who can run and fly a real rotary powered aircraft on staff now. Very sad. The new board of directors has managed to run so many people off the aerodrome staff. It sickens me and many, many people who LOVE that place and the people who used to work there. If something is not done soon Rhinebeck will be something of the past I'm afraid. If Ken Cassens was still on site the Spirit of St louis would be flying by now. One of there biggest mistakes was the firing of the Director, Thomas Polipink. If you know him at all you would understand. I could go on and on but I have to stop, I get very upset about this subject. I feel very lucky to have known Cole Palen and alot of the great people who blessed the Aerodrome. I hope I get to meet you there next week, please go, Thanks, Blue Skies, Tom P.S. I almost forgot to mention, Thank god Jim Hare is still there, Some body I know!

Tom,
I remember reading a bit on the unwelcome changes on the Aerodrome site a while back. Such a shame. It was unlike any aero museum/show I'd ever seen. It's next weekend then? I'll have to google it for info. Following weekend is the NEAT Fair in Shinhopple, NY. I think that I can probably make both. Hope to see you there.
Mike

Mike Thanks for reply, Yes things are different. But it's what we bring to the aerodrome that counts an open mind and hopes of better days. All we can do is try to support what is left. Hope you can make it. Tom
