With Rhinebeck coming up I would like to try and get the wing finished. This will require a lot of work. Work means a lot of time, in which there really is not a lot of in the warm months.
My goal, if it comes true would be to install radio equipment in the wing, cover it with the plywood, stain and varnish, plus get the markings on. By September 7th, Oh yes and build a 15 ft. storage box for the wing. I promise I will give it an honest attempt. I have been back at it for about three nights and have managed to mount the wing, build the back cabane struts, and start on the plywood for the ailerons. So far so good. This weeks nights I hope to get the ailerons finished and start cutting the wings plywood.

This morning I have covered one aileron. Have to go out and cut grass now, but em hoping to be able to cover the other some time today. Covering with this plywood as some of you know who have done this is really not fun, as if you screw up you really have problems. I had to have the wife come done and the extra hands really helped out. As each piece of plywood is added the wing gets bigger!
Last week when the wing was mounted to the airframe I did some stress testing on the wing. My son picked up one wingtip end as I did the other. We were able to lift the plane without the plywood on the wing with ease. This really gave me confidence in the wings structure as I have been worried about this through the whole building of the wing. The goal was to make it as light as possible. The complete wing without ply sheeting weighs 12 lbs. I think that will double with the plywood added.
If you visit Achim Engels site, FTS, You will see he has covered his D-8 and mounted the finished wing. My goal is to have my wing finished in the same manner.

Hey Tom,
Look'n great as usual my friend.
What thickness ply are you using for the wing panels??
You probably said before, but I forgot, (you know us old
guys and our memory).
How about showing us how you made the ball and socket
fittings for the struts, I want to do that when I build my 1/3 scale.
Keep up the good work,

Del

Hi Del
Good to hear from you. How about making that trip to Rhinebeck this year? You and all your Buddy's from over there should get together and come on out. We would all love to have you guys with all those beautiful WW-1 planes!!!! I'm really going to try to get this wing done for that event. There's a rumor Kermit weeks might be bringing his new D-7 there. The aerodrome has done a great job in restoring a lot of the planes for this years events. I think things will be improving year after year.
On the struts, I will look for the photo's, if I can't find them I'll do a draw up for you. it's really very simple. All the struts on the Fokkers can be done to scale. There's no reason not. I did get the ailerons covered, next is the wing!!!! I can't wait to start gluing panels on. This wing is so big, As each panel goes on it will get even bigger, as you know! Keep in touch.
Tom P.S. That's a 12 inch rule in the pic. These ailerons are as big as my third scale elevators.

Progress tonight, Started to make paper patterns for my plywood. So far so good! There is a 1/2 in scarf joint on each panel where they will over lap. I'm sure this will increase the strength. The ailerons are very strong.

Hey Paul
Your a hoot! You had me laughing this morn. Any way I meant to mention, What the hell did you do to that D-6? I'm glad you're fixing her right away. I have not seen that plane in person yet.
I will be cutting plywood soon. As you can see my paper patterns for the top of the wing are finished. But I still have to install the servo's and dummy aileron cables.
I'm looking forward to seeing your gang of hooligans. I'm sure with Glenn and all of us, there will be some fun at Rhinebeck! You gotta get Del and the rest of them WW-1 guys to come. Oh by the way, what in the hell are you doing up at 3:30 in the morning posting? When do you sleep?

Started cutting and applying plywood panels to the wing tonight. I have applied 4 panels. I figure it will use 5-1/2- 4ft. x 4ft. x 1/32 birch plywood sheets to cover the whole wing. Need to get some more glue for the rest. It took a whole bottle for the 4 panels. I used slow extra thick. I will epoxy the inside before applying the bottom panels. I am happy with the results so far.

Thanks.I am very much looking forward to Rhinebeck also. It's the only time of year I get to see a lot of my R/C friends.
Tonight I got a few more panels on. Wing is starting to take shape! So far the wing weighs in at 13.5 lbs. I think It'll be around 20 lbs. when it is complete! Not bad for 1/2 scale Fokker ply covered wing.

Finished applying the plywood panels on the top of the wing. I just have to secure the rest of the center cutout. Then I will flip the wing over and start fitting the servo's and the aileron cables. I also must make the hatches for the openings. I will then start applying the bottom plywood. Got to get on the ball, not much time left before Rhinebeck!
Thanks for looking,
Tom

Here I have clamped the ply down and I am soaking it with a mixture of ammonia and water. This will bend the wood so it will be easier to glue.

Well I finished the center section. Now it's time to turn the wing over and begin the rest of the inside work. Servo's,hatches, and such. I'll have to get a hold of Achim Ingels to find out the right stains to use. I can't wait to bolt this wing on the fuselage!!

Hi Guys
I did a quick check on the increased weight from sheeting the top of the wing. It came out to a total of 15 lbs. not bad. Very happy with this weight. I think with the wing finished, Servo's, battery, the rest of the plywood, stain , paint, and varnish, I will be 20,to 22 lbs. The fuse weighs around 45, to 50. That will put me in the 80 lb. finished range. Just what I was hoping.

Tonight so far I have built a wing jig to hold it upside down. I then mounted some large shrink tube through the ribs and slid some servo wire through. I then mixed up a **** load of epoxy and coated all the ribs to the plywood. Looks really messy in there, but no one will ever see it. I'm sure it will make things much stronger. Next will be the start of the bottom sheeting. Just moving along!
Always thanks for looking.
Tom, Oh as you can see the fuselage waits patiently in the corner!
