Balsa USA 1/3 scale Fokker D-VII
Over the past weekend my twin brother and put the test flight on the subject 1/3 D-VII. It is powered with a ZDZ-80RV w/ 26x10 wood prop turning 5,800 RPM.
Our impressions of the performance and handeling of this model formed up very quickly during the test flight. We are both VERY pleased with the quick response and smoothness and minimal power required to keep this 46.8# machine aloft. We did several power on and off stalls with excellent and very smooth recovery but did no aerobatics as we do not yet have the wood struts applied to the flying wires and did not want to expose them to any possible negative G's. The bungy main gear and spirng loaded tail skid worked to perfection as well.
We will now move onto installing the final scale details such as the wood struts applied to all flying wires and gear wires, aluminum front fuseside panels and most importantly - a pilot.
Balsa USA did a fine job with this design / kit.

Thanks Jay

Wow gentlemen, beautiful planes!
How are the partitions of the DVII for transportation?
4 loose wing panels, is the fuse parted??
John, what is your opinion about the Reeves Drive, and how is the sound?
Which silencer are you using?
app. how much tension is on the belt?
30x12" is great, at which rpm? (and what is Xoar?)
Have you tried also different prop sizes?
What is the total weight of your plane and have you enough power with it?
Thanks, Ralf (currently building 1/3 camel with ZG62 with torquemaster)

RE: Balsa USA 1/3 scale Fokker D-VII
Kerry hope you don't mind hijacking your thread a bit. I'll answerr Ralfs' questions:
1. The top wing is three parts - center section and 2 outboard wing panels for the top and 2 wings for the lower. They are jioned with aluminum wing tubes and bolts.
2. the Mick Reeves unit is perfect for this application. In fact any 1/3 scale WWI plane would be a good fit..
3. I am using the stock Zenoah muffler and with the 30x12 prop I max out at 4500 rpm at full power. I very rarely go above 3/4.
4. I went for more torque than speed so the 30x12 fit the bill. The full size DVII didn't go over 110 mph.
5. It hits the scales at 43 lbs with 3lbs of weight for balance.
6. I have more than enough power. Cruising is at 1/2 power.
Hope this helps
John

Thank you very much John!
The only question remaining
was the belt tension, is it very firm or a little loose?
Thanks in advance, Ralf

The tension on the belt is a tough question to answer. It is neither to tight or loose. It is tight enough that when under power the belt does not slip, but, when flipping it to start there is some slippage. If I remember, Mick's instructions that come with the unit go into detail about the belt tension. I just can't find where I put them.

Hello John,
Mick's instructions say the same as yours
I understand it is hard to explain, I'll just have to trail and error then
My only concern is putting the belt too tight, we'll see
thanks for answering [sm=thumbs_up.gif]
back to Vampire then (sorry for the interruption [sm=red_smile.gif]
Should take a BIG car to tranport the fuselage??
Thanks, Ralf

Hello Vampire,
Just wondering: how many time this project has taken you so far?
And if available, can you please post some pictures of the built?
mainly the wing-connections, interwing strut connections and the undercarriage
I saw that John needed 3lbs of weight for balance, how was it with yours?
could you shift RC-gear to accomplish no extra nose ballast weight?
I'm very interested in building one myself but I'm still wondering what partitions should be made to get this big aircraft to my attic
(I've got a large hobby-room there but the transportation-bottleneck are the stairs)
Perhaps make the cabanes and UC removable?
I just love it!
Greetings, Ralf
