Best Fokker Dvii 1/4 scale plans
Greetings all.
Looking to build a Fokker Dvii from plans. Want to go 1/4 scale, minimum 1/5 scale.
The cost of BUSA kits in fact all kits here in Australia is ridiculous, if you can find one. So I am setting my workshop up to build from plans this winter.
Weighing up between the BUSA plans and the MAN plan sets. Not sure if either of these come with text instructions/articles as well.
Can anyone shed some light on the best way to go.
Thanks

I believe that one of you fellow Aussies (Gary Sunderland) has DVII plans for a 1/4 scale model which were featured in Flying Scale Models.

RE: Best Fokker Dvii 1/4 scale plans
If you are building from plans,I would recommend the Allan plans. The Proctor plans are of course superb, but it would be harder to scratch build one from them.Of course you could order the Proctor kit and then you would have the whole deal. The Sunderland plans are good as well, and although I don't have his DVII plans, the other designs I have from him are very well done. The only problem is if you have to order them from Flying Scale Models. It could be summer again before you receive them.Perhaps they have expedited shipping now but when I ordered mine it took over 4 months to arrive.Strange because when I order back issues of the magazine they get to me quickly.
One last thing,if you want a slightly smaller model I think Bob Holman plans here in the States has one at @80" wingspan.I believe Sunderland also has a DVII in 1/5 scale.
Good Luck!Love those DVIIs!

Gary Allen's drawings are based on the Nieto D.VII set, which are somewhat suspect. From the looks of it I'd say Gary Sunderland's drawings are based either on Windsock or Replicraft, so accuracy is assured. I think his drawings are the best I've seen so far! However, if you want a great flyer, the Gary Allen plans can't be beat, plus it looks so darn good in the air...another plus is that it's a pretty easy build, and the design is just great. FWIW, I just bought my second set of Allen's plans from MAN for my next D.VII build.

RE: Best Fokker Dvii 1/4 scale plans
Thankyou for the help gentlemen.
If he Allen plans build easy and fly well, they get my vote. As this is my first big scale project.
I looked on the MAN website for the March 98 issue which has a build feature. Back issues seem to stop at Aug 98[] Any one got a copy??????
The Allen plans are 1/2 the cost of the Sunderland plans once I convert GBP.
Ive seen the video of PropNuts BUSA Dvii with the briggs gasser & I am hooked.
Thanks

RE: Best Fokker Dvii 1/4 scale plans
G'Day mopar68,
I too was hooked on Prop Nut's D7 with the Briggs. I've already procured my 34cc Briggs from Bryan.
And converted it myself as I have a small lathe to face the flywheel with, and make the prop hub.
Last year I ordered the MAN plans and they came with a photo copy of the construction guide.
The plans are very well drawn and the guide is well written. Only down side is the images in the guide
are not very clear. So if anyone can scan the pages for the construction guide . . .
Anyone know where us in OZ can obtain spruce ?
I met Gary Sunderland 2 weeks ago at our scale day. He was checking out my Canadair CL215 with twin
Magnum 52 4-strokes. Didnt get to speak to him for too long. Poor bloke gets snowed over with people
wanting to shake his hand and pick his brain.
Regards.

RE: Best Fokker Dvii 1/4 scale plans
Hi Ian
Thanks for the reply. Definatley gonna order the MAN plans since they come with literature.
What was it worth to freight the Briggs to Aust?
Spruce, try some specialist timber people that supply to the boating industry. I know spuce is used in yacht fitouts etc. Or Tasmanian Silver wattle has good qualities (apparently)
Hoop pine is another. Try this www.auf.asn.au
Where is Dingley Village?
Regards

RE: Best Fokker Dvii 1/4 scale plans
G"day Mark,
I ordered 2 Briggs units from Bryan - I should have ordered 10.[]
I ordered 2, one for me and another for a pal. Delivered to work they worked out at $152 AU.
For our 'pacific paso', that's the bargain of the century.
Have a look at Prop Nut's Briggs running here --> http://media.putfile.com/Four-Stroke-Gasser
and in the air here -->http://media.putfile.com/Fokker-DVII-Sunny-Day
Ohhhhh what a sweet sound it makes.
Not sure on getting more engines tho.
But I did find the following . . .
http://www.m-and-d.com/BS-21032-0111
for
$142.97 USD
and (scroll down their page and you will see them)
http://www.brandnewengines.com/engin...dstratton.html
$169 USD
Dingley Village is way around the other side of the bay. Near Moorabbin Airport - also
near Dandenong
Regards.

RE: Best Fokker Dvii 1/4 scale plans
Hi Ian
I will email Bryan as to how many he has left.
Looks like this will be a popular engine particularly for WW1 and golden era stuff.
My budget is overcommitted this month with Dvii plans purchase and a BCMA26 for my ASM Pitts.
Do you have much scale stuff at SEMAC?
Have you started on your Dvii yet?
Regards

RE: Best Fokker Dvii 1/4 scale plans
If you plan on putting a Briggs 34cc in a DVII,you absolutely must keep the weight down.I couldn't follow through on this advice(mine ended up at 23+ lbs.) and I had to fly at full throttle all the time.

J,
Do the Allen plans build heavier than the BUSA?
Is there any obvious places you could save weight in the build?

RE: Best Fokker Dvii 1/4 scale plans
I haven't built the BUSA model but I can tell you where I added most of my weight. The biggest gain is from the Proctor wheels I have on.They are absolutely gorgeous but they weigh almost a pound more than other wheels.I also made scale hinges and other fittings out of brass. My dummy engine is probably heavier than need be.My paint is a little heavier than usual model paint.I used plywood for the turtledeck and the landing gear fairing wing.I also have the full ammo drum and a scale seat plus other doo-dads in th cockpit area. So,if you take take care,I don't see why you couldn't build the Allen plans as light as the BUSA version (or lighter) if you don't want to add the things that I did.

RE: Best Fokker Dvii 1/4 scale plans
Hi All,
jtisch, cocobear - have you guys got any links you can point us to of your D vii's on RCU ?
The Gary Allen plans show that the front wheels are made up from very thin ply and use auto rubber hose for the tyres.
I had a partial kit laser cut by Model Draughting Services - he has the DXF's for the MAN Dvii.
Having this done will save you a bomb of work/time etc.
All ribs, engine cowling formers, even the circles that make the wheels are all there. And delivered including postage
was roughly $200 AU. About the only things not included are the straight stringers, spars etc.
Our clubs website is [link=http://members.optusnet.com.au/~semac]here[/link]We have a scale/warbirds event coming up on 20 April 08.
I mainitain ?? the website, so if you e-mail the webmaster - you will get me [8D]
Last years event was massive and promises to be as good if not bigger. Most of the guys are not that much into scale, but there are
a few of us who are or are starting to. Alex's Osprey will be there, a big P47 most likely, Hangar 9 Sopwith Camel to name but a few of our guys.
Once I get to 'marine timbers' - they should be able to provide me with the spruce or hoop pine. Then I can make a start on my Dvii.
E-mail me if you like, I can ping you some images of the Briggs.
PS - anyone out there got a copy of the magazine they could scan for us covering the build of the MAN Dvii
Regards.

RE: Best Fokker Dvii 1/4 scale plans
Here are a couple of my BUSA DVII. Mine came out just over 19lbs. Your weight will have more to do with wood selection than anything else. If you are scratch building you will have more control over this.
I highly recommend Glenn Torrence models for accesories. Especially his losenge fabric. Well worth the effort and it did not add the weight that I thought it would. www.flygtm.com

RE: Best Fokker Dvii 1/4 scale plans
If anyone is interested, I have a couple of brand new Briggs 34cc engines I'll part with.
I got them when I first got into RC, but I've been sucked into the cheaper electric flight. I really love the sound of Gas flight, but hate the sound of my wife screaming at the expense!! [:'(]
I'm new to RC universe as a member, but have been a member of the "other" group for a while. I am still trying to learn this navigation format.[]
If your interested, email me otherwise I'll list them on ebay, or the for sale forum.
Thanks,
Brian
