I've pulled a couple of test canopies to check the accuracy of them. The one pictured will soon be on its way to Tom as an aid in finishing the design of the canopy slide mechanism. I'm hoping Tom will look it over and give me some feedback on the shape as well. There is still much finish work to do on the plug before I can start pulling clear parts but I want to get the basic shape nailed down first. Slow but steady...

I've been playing around with some acrylic on my lathe/mill trying to learn a bit about it. This is my first run at trying to figure out some of the geometry. This is a very rough trial run only, but it's something I can put in my hand. I'm currently thinking that the wheel will be a two part affair. The back of the wheel, internal web and half the center hub as one piece, then the front of the wheel and half the hub as a second piece. I can already see that this is going to be a pretty challenging project for me, but I'm having fun.

I agree - it's looking very nice and your canopy plug does too.

I had a small setback with the cockpit. I had it on the bench and some small furry creature (no witness) knocked it to the floor busting it. Nothing I can't fix, just time consuming. I had parts tacked in and luckily only the frame broke.

Awesome! Very nice job.
Hope you don't mind a critique, but (I go overboard sometimes) the straight pieces on the cutouts that connect to the rim are too close together. Here's a full scale picture from Lex for comparison...

I've been working on getting the fuselage drawings cleaned up in preparation for offering the fuse kit and they are getting close. These drawings do not include some information, such as electronics placement and pushrod routing. I wanted the groups' input on this. My opinion is that most folks have their own methods and preferences for these kinds of items and so I was not going to include it on the drawings. At this point I don't know for sure where it would go exactly anyway and probably won't know until I get a prototype built. Same deal for the canopy slide mechanism. As I don't know exactly how it's going to be done I can't put it on the plans and some folks will probably do it differently while others may not do it at all. So, for those of you who would like all that information worked out before you purchase you will probably have to wait while a couple of us get fuses built. For anyone who is ready to get started and prefers to work out the details for themselves a basic fuselage kit will be available very shortly. I have all the parts cut for my full fuselage build and hope to start construction this coming week. So give me some feedback gents, who wants to wait and who would rather get started?

Looking good Chad!
Since I'm working on the cockpit, I'll take the back seat on this and wait for the others to give their inputs on the fuselage.

I haven't forgotten about the sliding cockpit prototype. We have the big charity bike ride this coming weekend. After that, life should get somewhat back to normal. Got Chris successfully married last weekend, so hopefully his honeymoon cruise isn't getting too messed up by the hurricanes.

I'm still working on wheels, so I can wait a while on the fuse. After the wheels, I'll be starting in on my idea for thin walled cockpit.

Scott, the way I have it drawn now the upper part of the fuselage in the cockpit area is sheeted with a piece of 1/32 ply. You can see it in the pic below called out as part "F23". The main reason for this was to be able to laser cut this piece including the slot for the rear canopy track and have it made of something rigid enough to accept the slide mechanism. However, I imagine you could carry this plywood down further, at least to the crutch if not lower, in order to have a thinner wall all through the cockpit area. Of course you still have the crutch and stringers running through there but I don't see getting rid of those unless we go with a molded glass fuselage. Just a thought, good luck with it.

I would want to be moved up on the list for completed parts and plans since my latest project is now in primer. Both sets of those wheels look great. As far as control systems in the fuse, I wouldn't think it would be difficult since we already have the internal horns put together as long as it doesn't interfere with the bottom of the cockpit. Anybody have any further thoughts on the retracts?

Heres an idea I used on a Ziroli Zero I've been working on forever. I used smaller stronger (spruce in this case) material to simulate the stringers in the fuse area. Worked out pretty well. I notched the formers before I sheeted.

Please tell us more about this idea. What do you mean by thin walled cockpit? Is it like what jmodguy is referring to?

I can wait a bit on the fuse kits, due to slow progress on existing projects and repairs to existing planes. I am totally impressed with your work Chad, and your too, Dave. Everyone keep up the wonderful work!
