RE: 1/6 Scale F4U Corsair Group Build
Hey guys,
A new friend from Germany sent me these templates of the decals, labels, markings, etc. for the Corsair. Now I just need to find a document that shows where each one goes [sm=lol.gif]
As soon as I find the document I will post here and on the [link=http://f4ucorsair.freeforums.org/lettering-markings-nomenclature-decals-etc-t48.html]Corsair Information Site[/link].

they look good richard.......thanks for posting....
my build's been put on hold until i can source some new retracts!!!......don't like the idea of the cylinder going though the main spar....[&o].....although might have to go that way with some mods to the wing......i'll let you know how i get on.....

Richard, nice leg work as always! Merry Christmas! I had always hoped we could get a real engineer slash machinist to build the thing. Earl had the closest ...so still with that one, but I have to say that I cut a paper template to our scale dimension (5 inch wheels), and his Clippard air rams are at least 3/16ths into the wheel fitting. I'll have to get back to him unfortunately, to get that rectified. He does great work, and I am sure he'll fix that for me. Richard, you originally were using my Glennis wheels. What was the Clippard ram on your set? I am not sure how I must have gotten a different air ram (I can see it won't fit even without the actual wheels "in hand")? I believe I can make some decent drag links to work with his gear though, just needs some motivated metal work with some brass stock, I think. I think air is OK if you are dilligent with it. Keep up with the alternatives though, I just won't be using it until "Corsair number2". I want to just press forward with the build given present resources (I spent 475 bucks on a good gear already, and moving on). Ho ho ho!

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas. Now get back to work!
I don't remember the rams that were included in the retracts I got from Earl, but the wheel did fully collapse and retract. I believe some of the material was ground from the cylinder to allow that to happen and it wasn't enough to be concerned about.
I know Chad is working with Lenny at Shindin and if you look at Lenny's website you can see he does great work. This group expects and demands a higher level of scale and functional realism in our Corsair retracts and to date this has eluded the group, but I think Lenny may be on to something. I have confidence in Chad to see this through (not putting you on the spot Chad, just my opinion concerning your history with the group) and am looking forward to seeing the product delivered.
Eric, if you get the drag links working definitely let the group see them in action.

Richard, that is some amazing CAD work on the gear that Mr. Fischer has done. The timing on those could not be better!
Some potentially exciting news regarding the Corsair. Jerry Bates is interested in the plans and would like to market them when they are complete. This is good news for Sierra and/or Shindin (and therefor us) because it means potential for more sales of their landing gear. I've also been speaking with Dave (Scaleman) about coordinating our efforts so that whatever we come up with will work in the Taylor designed airplane as well. The more potential sales to be made the more attractive the idea will be to the manufacturers. However, the big issue then becomes just how scale to make the landing gear. The more scale the gear, the more expensive it will be, and that means lower demand. What I would like to see is something middle of the road or a bit better, say comparable to the Aune gear, which is designed in such a way that it has the potential to be super scale for those willing to pay the money. Anyway, that is my line of thought on the subject as it stands now. Any an all input is, as always, much appreciated.
Happy New Year Corsair builders! With any luck 2009 will see some completed Corsairs on this thread. I can't wait!

I knew you'd like it and yes, it's perfect timing. Check out the entire thread on the Corsair Information Site because he put even more there.
I agree with your line of thought. It is good news if JB would market the 1/6 plans because that would increase demand for retracts. The prototype of any manufactured item is the most expensive part and manufacturers need to feel confident that their product will sell. So, if JB has 1/6 plans to sell then who knows, Robart, Sierra, Shindin, etc may offer the 1/6 gear in a highly detailed version. Perhaps they could offer a base unit for those that just want to fly, then have options, like drag links, etc. for those of us that also want our warbirds to look as realistic on the ground as possible.
I too am looking forward to 2009! God Bless you all and hope you have Happy Holidays!

RE: 1/6 Scale F4U Corsair Group Build
That is wonderful news concerning Jerry Bates and potential gear sources! I am finishing up my run of tail gear, and then will be working on the tail feathers. Our first motor should arrive on Monday, the 52cc twin from RCGF. I"ll take a pic of it over the plans and post it. I'll be doing some break in on it the following week and will post some numbers.
Happy hoidays to all!

This is an update on my tire development project. I have attached two pictures that unfortunately don't have enough contrast to show the amount of detail that was produced. I am making a couple of rubber prototypes to test the concept.
I don't know if anyone saw my previous post regarding the landing gear I have been designing; it is 100% scale. The problem is getting the cost designed out of a production unit. I don't have an estimated completion date but I am continuing to spend a lot of "think-time" on it and feel I am making some good progress.
Hope everyone had a merry Christmas and wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year.

Nice looking tires. I would like to see more.
I, for one, did not see your post about the gear. Where is that located? I looked back through the posts until the middle of Nov. and didn't see any mention of gear from you. Maybe my brain is still a bit fuzzy from the dinner and entertainment from yesterday hahaha. What do you mean it is 100% scale? Do you have anything (pictures, drawings, etc.) to share?

RE: 1/6 Scale F4U Corsair Group Build
I mentioned the gear in Post #886 (I had a hard time locating it myself).
To me, 100% scale means it includes every detail that you see when observing the real article. All links, springs, nuts, bolts, holes, and anything else that distinguishs the design. I always develop my models full size from factory drawings and then rescale them to whatever size I want when I am ready to produce the item. At this time I have only rough models of various parts of the gear; I haven't spent any time trying to assemble a complete gear leg such as the ones you recently posted.
I will edit this message and post a couple of pictures a little later tonight.

Oh, that post on page 36 from 9/30 Yeah you are right, I didn't go back far enough.
I think we would all love to see some super scale retracts and yes 100% scale would be "elegant" as you put it. For me, I would like to see the gear with at least the following:
- The 8 degree bend at the axle
- Functional lifting device (what compresses the strut when the gear is raised)
- Drag links
- A way to incorporate mechanical actuators (like from LADO Tech) as an option to the air system

VMF-214 BlackSheep Lt. Col. Jim Hill has signed up on my [link=http://f4ucorsair.freeforums.org]Corsair Information Site[/link]!
This is what he said about the Corsair:
December 27th, 2008, 10:30 pm - "The F4U Corsair was the best damn fighter ever built. I know, I flew one..!!"
For anyone who doesn't know Jim, he was born in Chicago in 1920. He arrived in the South Pacific on 5 June 1943 after completing flight school in Pensacola, and joined VMF-214 on 7 August 1943. He flew both combat tours with Pappy Boyington and the 'Black Sheep'.
On 18 October 1943 on a fighter sweep over Kahili he shot down a Japanese Zero. During his two tours with the 'Black Sheep' he flew a total of 70 combat missions, and also flew a third combat tour with VMF-211.
I'm trying to setup a time for Jim to be online so CIS members can chat with him live. If you're not a member then join - it's free! Wish me luck!

Nice workmanship, but way too much money for a retract so far from scale.
Jerry, your work is looking really great. I'm still puzzling over how to do the lettering. I'm also going to go with a simpler tread pattern. I haven't had time over the past couple of weeks to work on the project. Hopefully, I'll find some time soon.

I sell two 12" rails for $20.00 plus shipping and handling. But if you want to pay more for the same thing buy from Brian. I also sell the ball links for $1.00 each. I've got a pair of mine in my 1/4 scale F4U-5N and 1/5 scale F4U-5N Corsairs.

RE: 1/6 Scale F4U Corsair Group Build
Sam, the quality of that tw looks good, but Earl Aune was selling a more correct one for 150$ or so. I haven't built mine yet but that is crazy high price! I got my entire main gear from Earl for $475. Thanks for bringing up an option though, and I guess Earl is not currently providing anything. The tail gear is pretty well documented on this thread and others, so I hope that will get me through on building my own. I just got a Microlux 5 inch table sander for Christmas!! I hope that will help shaping the circuit board material. Any advice on the TW would be good from anyone. I know it was said the material kills scroll saw blades, so I bought good tin snips to cut the rough shape. I was just going to put a mask on, and sand to a template from plans. If anyone can correct me before hand please do.

Hi Eric
I am just finishing up over a dozen of these tailwheels, and so I am pretty familiar with them! If you use Luke's or Chile's plans as templates you should do fine. I'd be happy to answer any questions as you go along. I found that by putting the shock bottom into a .223 shell gauge and lightly tapping it iwth a hammer, it rounded the end so that the shock was retained. Also, you might want to leave the riser and the actuation peices a bit long so you can sand them to fit. Here is one of tailwheels I've just finished:

I have been looking at this engine ever since you mentioned a couple of weeks ago.
Looks very interesting, I like twin engined gassers, they have a good sound too.
Although it fits the cowl perfect, I think it needs a shaft extension of maybe an inch or so to make room for a dummy radial.
What did the engine cost?
Cheers,

RE: 1/6 Scale F4U Corsair Group Build
The engine was $479 US, and according to the US distributor, they will be offerring prop shaft extensions in the future. This is my first twin and I have to say it is really nice. I hope to start running it this week sometime to see how it behaves. I plan on having a two-to-one exhaust header and a cannister muffler to quiet it. Then I can get an extension from the cannister outlet to scale exhaust outlets (hopefully). Another possibility is to run two small cannisters and run the exhausts into scale outlets. They are working on cannisters for the 26cc and the 52cc twin, so I'll be waiting to see what they come up with. As I run it I'll get some numbers on performance. I'm really hoping that we can keep this plane to about 20lbs. At that weight this engine should really haul it around.

Happy New Year everybody!
I hope that all appendices are still attached where they are supposed to be after the fireworks
I hope that we will solve the problems concerning the landing gear and cockpit this year.
Cheers, from a freezing cold Holland.
