Thanks everyone.
Teus, what you are describing is exactly what is needed for this model. When the power is finally cut, she drops so fast. DJ described his first landing as bouncy too.
Now if I can only remember that in the panic of a landing

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
I had a bit of luck today when I took the model to the field for another flight. I slightly snagged the rudder getting it out of the car and the right rudder cable broke at the brass horn on the rudder post.
I say "luck" because A: it could have broken in the air and B: without bad luck, sometimes I would have no luck at all.
Anyway, I replaced the Kevlar with Sullivan braided cable and it feels very positive now. I used Kevlar to avoid radio issues but, with 2.4GH this is probably unnecessary. The rudder cables, unlike the elevator, are hard to check for wear because they are under a little access plate. It also has a thin brass horn - more likely to cut through the cable - than the wooden ones on the elevator.

This engine really likes to run backward which is irritating. I went from 15% to 20% fuel and that seemed to help but maybe it was just luck. Leaning it out a little definitely helped. I probably have the low speed needle too rich and the tank height doesn't help. I also have to wonder about the bendy tube exhaust maybe pooling a little fuel for it to suck in and run on.
With the latest adjustments, it seemed okay and I flew it this morning. It was just a short flight, mostly to work out a better landing strategy. In this regards, it was successful. Landing with a little more power on keeps it from the big bounce. YES!
I will have it, plus my VK Camel, at the Dawn Patrol at the Palomar field in Fallbrook CA this Saturday. I hope to see some of you there for this nice event.

All the Saitos I've had (about 5 now) have been very easy to tune. I usually have the idle around 28-30 and the high end at 98-102.

Hey Abu, that is great! It should be an excellent event and it will be great to see see you again.
Here is the club website for everybody. http://www.palomarrcflyers.org/ Click on LOCATIONS and there is a map.
Abu, you already know what I look like but here is a pix for anybody else who might come down for this and be looking for me...

I had a nice day at the Palomar Flyers Dawn Patrol. I flew my VK Camel for a decent flight and the Siemens Schuckert too. It was fine until the bouncy landing which bent a few things. It is repairable but embarrassing.
Don (Abufletcher) was there and probably has some photos of my flights unfortunately. Oh well...
I ran into a friend, Bruce Meyers, who was there with his brother. Bruce is the Meyers in Meyers Manx, for those of you who like dune buggies and kit cars. He lives a few miles away from the Palomar field.
I will post a few pictures of Bruce, Abu, etc.

Thanks for posting Alan...great to see good participation in the scale scene down there. I'm sure with time you will cure the bounce..I had the same problem with my Pica Waco 1/5 scale...my solution has been to approach as if doing a touch and go...a little more speed and attempting a two wheeler...and a very gentle touch when hitting terra firma...ultimate concentration on that gentle touch !!!
Some great looking planes at your event...keep it up !!

Yeah, it was a great day at Palomar and both Allan's Siemens Schuckert and his Camel are amazing models. To fly two such detailed models at one meet takes a lot of courage but both flights looked very good even if the SS was a little bouncy at the end. My EIII was just there as a hanger queen (after hanging on the ceiling for several years). Sometime I'll have to get up it ready and flying again.
Allan took home the prize for best WWI kit. The plaque for best most scale flight went to a guy with a 1/3 scale Pup fitted with a smoke system. This wasn't because he flew in a particularly scale fashion (he didn't) but but because it looked real enough for someone to call the fire department and sheriff to report that they had seen an airplane "crash!" I’m preparing the D.III for the next outing - probably in Arizona, late October.
The starboard interplane strut was broken in my landing at the Palomar field so I have repaired it. The fabric was peeled off on the inboard surface and a groove cut in. A carbon fiber tube was epoxied in and, after adding a little bondo, the strut was patched with doped fabric. Very strong now.
I might recommend replacing the balsa strut parts with something harder for future builds but there would be a slight weight penalty. The balsa is plenty strong except for my hard landings so maybe it is okay.
The undercarriage wires needed replaced too.

I got to see Allen's model up close at our local 1/8th AF meet here in Arizona. What a terrific model, full of detail and expertly done!! He also does a great job of flying this airplane, and he makes it look easy. Flying 1/6th WW1 fighters takes a certain knack, I can assure you. This model looks great in the air.

Thanks, John. This is flattering coming from a great modeler like you.
John and I "spotted" for each other and it was a pleasure to see his fabulous Eindecker in the air. He let me take the sticks for a minute and this wingwarping wonder flys better than any of my planes, not to mention its amazing detail and craftsmanship.
He did a mock dogfight with a nice Nieuport 28 and they took turns "shooting" each other down - each going into a death spin until almost to the ground. The only thing missing was some smoke.

Actually, he insisted. I was terrified but it really does fly nice. Of course all I did was a few turns.
John has a build thread for this model over on RCScalebuilder (about 45 pages so get a comfortable chair) http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/...301&PN=1&TPN=1
I thought for sure it would win the major award at the meet but the amazing Claude (with a Seidel 770) took the honors. Hard to beat that sound.

Thank you Allan and Don!! Events like the 1/8th meet can really be a lot of fun. No contest pressure, no schedule, fly whenever you desire, great people, nice model planes to look at, etc.. I came away inspired to do better.
Don, the Proctor E-III is a lovely design, beautiful in it's own ungainly way. You will be rewarded with a terrific model someday.
Allan, I hope we get to fly together again soon.

Allan, well I have reached the end. I quit scanning and began reading when I got to the construction phase. So it appears with the engine change all that's left is for you and your wonderful model to spend some time together. You cam be very proud, it's gorgeous. I am still waiting on Dave to send the text from the magazine article, since you have a set of his plans you know that they raise as many questions as the amswer. There is no front view nor does the plan view include the landing gear so there's no telling from these drawings what the width of the gear is or what the spreader bar looks like. The photos of you model while under construction answer some questions but there are still lots. Can you point me to a source of some good three views? Thanks. Hope you're getting some good flight time with the D III>

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
Doc,
I have a decent 5-view that I scanned from Dave's Windsock datafile. He brought it to the Hoosier DP and I accidentally (honest!) took it home. I scanned what I needed out of it and sent it back to him. Evidently, that particular datafile isn't available anymore...too bad.
I'll send you a PDF of the 5-view when I get home.
Jim

Epilogue
Several weeks ago, I contacted the San Diego Air and Space Museum about donating my Siemens Schuckert for their WW-I display. They were very interested and, last Monday, I took it in. Yesterday I dropped by to “visit” it in its temporary display spot. They will add some information/signage later but I appreciated the fact that they got it into view as soon as possible.
It has flown about a dozen times and was always fun to see in the air. My landings never were worked out and there was always some repair, at least restringing the LG cross wires. I was able to pull the RX, Saito72, tank, on-board glow system and most of the digital servos – for use elsewhere. The original RCV engine was reinstalled, as were the two dummy Siemens Halskey cylinders displaced by the Saito. It feels good to know that it will be viewed everyday by many people, contributing to the museum’s efforts.
My thanks to all who were part of this project. I couldn't have done it without you.
(I still have another set of NC cut wood parts from Chris… humm….)

Wow. I just came back to revisit this thread because I am such a fan of this plane and this build thread. I am very happy to see this plane did not come to a final crash ending, or even a hangar queen. It is almost like it went to scale model heaven where it belongs. thanks again Allan.
