Feeling under the weather so no work on the Waco tonight, I may have to pull off a long night Friday to make up for tonight to have a shot at getting any paint down this weekend.

Bummer! I hope I didn't give it to ya! I think you did read some of my posts when I was sick didn't you?
You know, sometimes it's good to take a break too. You're talking to the "break-king" [:@]
(Sorry, couldn't resist that one!)

Anthony, It looks like you are using four servos for the ailerons, may I ask why?
As you know there is an aileron link between the upper and lower.

FYI: I have finished the rivets on the aileron's[8D] Just for giggles I totaled up the rivets for the fuel tank and aileron's and I was surprised and shocked to get a total of 2,120 rivets. I am sure the cowling will eat a few hundred more. The cowl will get finished tonight.
I stopped by the hobby shop today and picked up some small mixing cups to mix some paint for my airbrush. I will give all the rivets a light spraying to lock them in place before spraying the color coats with the HVLP gun. I am having nightmares just thinking about the rivets coming off when spraying the paint.
Also after spraying a few planes I have noticed it is hard to get the details painted without washing them out in the paint. It seems the airflow from the larger guns blows over the details too much and doesn't want to cover them good then you tend to hit the area harder with the paint and the details wind up swimming in paint. I have decided to airbrush all the details ie: rivets, screws etc before spraying the color coat with the HVLP gun.
I will post some pics tomorrow once I start airbrushing.

LOL, I thought about the same thing before I started to spray. I had envisioned all of the rivets blowing off... Don't worry Anthony it wont happen. But a bit of advice, use a tack cloth an lightly wipe off your plane, if any of the rivetsare loose they would then come off. I did have a few come off when Iwiped mine, but I was prepared with extra rivets and my iron was readily handy. Good luck you'll do great!

Thanks for the encouragement VJ,
I will wipe everything down 1st as suggested but I will be spraying the details 1st as described as I think I will get a better finish in the end. Just from my past experiences I have struggled with getting good paint results around small details.
I am sure there is a big difference between the KK and the latex I am used to spraying.

I finished up the rivets on the cowl last night. 240 rivets. That's a grand total of 2,360 rivets and I know them all very well[&o]
I decided to paint the rivets on the cowl 1st. The only white on the cowl is the blisters and they will be painted before the blue. I have mixed up 1/2 oz of blue to spray the rivets on the cowling. This should assure the rivets stay in place while I am masking off the white on the blisters to spray the blue paint. I know how I operate and I would knock off alot of rivets during the process.
The paint has to be mixed and allow to sit for 30 minutes(induction time) before thinning and spraying. I am using a 1:1:1 mix of part A, part B and reducer.
My airbrush is an Iwata Eclipe HP-C Plus. Nice airbrush and it is more capable than I am for sure.
This is going to be fun!!

The blue has been sprayed on the cowl rivets and the screws that will be permenately mounted to the fuse. I did have a few rivets pop off while spraying and had to put them back on. No big deal. Now I will mich up a 1/2 oz of white and do the same with all the rivets on the fuel tank and aileron's.

Nice Anthony! I found out I'm going to be doing a few rivets on my Cub. I'd never thought about it. I'm glad both you and VJ are doing them because I'm getting some invaluable info.
Keep on it!

Have fun with the rivets
I just sprayed the rivets in the fuel tank and had 6 of them blew off with the airbrush. I put new rivets in place and all is well. I had mixed up more blue than needed so I mixed up a smaller batch of white and ran out. Just mixed another batch and I am waiting on the induction time. Hopefully the rivets hold better on the aileron's. I just stamped out an additional 30 rivets just in case.

Ive never used an air brush before Anthony, but is it possible that the airbrush as well as the close distance may be responsible for blowing off the rivets? Usinga larger spray gun you are at maybe a safer (further) distance that won't dislodge the rivets. How do you like the paint? Looks super!

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Hi VJ,
I am not sure about the reason for the rivets dislodging. These may be rivets that I just didn't hit well enough with the soldering iron. The pressure on the airbrush is 18lbs. Just a monior issue and I was able to put rivets back in place and spray over them.
The paint sprays nice. I will be mixing up a batch of white in a couple of hours and spraying the fuse and the bottom side of a few parts. I will know more once I break out the HVLP gun.

I forgot I did spray the blisters with the airbrush, 2 good coats. They turned out nice. I will have to mask the pattern on the blisters before spaying the cowl blue.

Well good and bad.
I started spraying the white and I goofed. I thought I had my gun properly adjusted and I have a run on the side of the fuselage[:@]. I will have to sand it out after the paint cures and recoat. Hard to see the white paint going down on top of white primer. Other than that it is going well. It is going to take a few days to get all the white painted.

Awesome Paint!!!
I tried soemting risky with the paint and it worked. I went down and took a rag saoked with laquer thinner and carefully rubbed away at the runs. The runs wiped away without removing all the paint under them. I then gave the fuse another coat of paint and all is well.
Here is a pic of the area that had the run in the previous post.

Due to the lighting in my hobby room it is hard to tell much about the gloss. I brought the center section up and it looks good. At this point the paint is tack free.

Can't wait to mask and spray the blue.
I just sprayed the last parts for today. I will let them dry until morning and go at it again.
