Well after exchanging e-mails with Gary he said we should have made a gold border around the letters due to the color scheme. I think Gary is right. After thinking about it today I asked the boss (wife's) opinion and she said yes definitely needs gold border around the letters. I don't want to remove the letters that are there so I will pick up some more gold pinstripe tape and outline the numbers.
I will post a few pics once this is complete. Gary could have made gold border on the letters if I had envisioned the need. Live and learn.

Hi Guys,

Hope you guys don't mind me interjecting some insight on the stab incidence. My Waco needed a fair amount of down trim on the maiden and subsequent flights. I spoke with Dany at AMR. He said the incidence should be 3 - 4 degrees positive. The issue with my Waco was that my stab moved during the glue drying process. The jig provided will give approximately 2 degrees positive. Dany actually said that 3 - 5 ddegrees wouldn't hurt the plane any. After setting my Waco at 3 - 4 degrees over the winter - zero trim is needed. Bottom line they are all going to be a little different because we are not using the most precise building techniques and building with balsa is not all the precise either. Just my 2 cents

Hi Curtis,
Glad you were able to get your WACO straightened out. I am working on getting mine dolled up for the Fall Classic.

I went down to my hobby room and found a partial roll of 3/16" gold pin stripe tape. I tried it out on the numbers on the bottom wing panel and it really makes the numbers pop. I am guessing the original WACO had the numbers trimmed in gold as well. I will pick up some more tape tomorrow and finish the job.

"just a lack of proper technique."

I was once taught to remove such by pulling it back across itself, rather than lifting it up. Helped a lot. And a little hair dryer softens up the adhesive a lot. You may leave some residue on the surface, but that is removeable with alchohol

Anthony,

I'm right in the process of spraying the bumps on the cowl...a lot of masking. Pin striping will be next, so are you spraying anything over the pin striping inorder to keep it from coming off. I fired up the DLE170 two days ago and ran almost a gallon through it. Runs great, but it sure sucks the gas. 30oz of fuel in 8 minutes! That's with varying the speed and staying out of full throttle except for blips.

Hi Chuck,
I do not plan on clearing over the pinstripe. I have already cleared the wings. I do not think I will have any issues with the stripes lifting. The bottom wing does get a little 2-cycle oil residue. I picked up some high quality detailing spray while I was at the paint store today. This will make it easier to remove the oil residue and should also help protect the pinstripe. Time will tell. I did spray a clear coat over the entire plane after I finished the paint and pinstripe. If the pinstripe lifts on the "N" numbers I will just replace as necessary.

Jeez that is a lot of gas in 8 minutes. I use somewhere between 20-25oz in that amount of time with the 3W-157. I have my timer set for 10 minute flights on my radio and I have approx. 1/2 tank of fuel when I land. I have a 50oz tank. Usually after 10 minutes I am ready to land. It is nice having the fuel reserves in case someone has an emergency and has the runway blocked for a few minutes.

Post some pics of your progress.
Later!!

Anthony, that gold pin striping looks great, really brings out the numbers! I know what you mean too about how the vinyl lays down over the stitching and pinking. Here is a shot of my Cub.

Anthony, just a little gold pin striping made those numbers stand out and pop...much better!

These are a couple of pictures of the painted cowl using Nelson Hobby paints. Not perfect, but the best I've ever done, and I'm pleased with the results. There were a couple spots where a little whiff of the blue got under the masking tape. The stencils were from Vikie at Getstencils.com, but were difficult to apply because of the curved surface of the bumps. She makes a good product, it's just a difficult spot to apply them. Before painting the blue, I brushed on a light coat of Polyu to seal the edges, which really helped. I'm trying to decide on color for the pin striping. Red, black or gold, any comments?

Chuck

Chuck,
Seeing as you are using the same colors as my WACO just in a opposite pattern I would use gold for the trim. It shows up well with the dark blue and the white. Black would not show up well at all against the blue.
I have used the Nelson's paint in the past it is a good product once you figure out how to spray it.

The cowl blisters are the most difficult part of the WACO to mask. Once you get past that everything else is easy.

The trim tape looks great, and it also helps to hide masking problems.

To aid with adhesion, I set my covering iron to a "warm" setting, and run it over the tapes.

The heat really enhances the adhesion of the tapes, virtually eliminating tape lifting.

Not a good picture, but I used a stuff called "Liquid Mask". You paint on a number of coats, util it gets somewhat thick, use an X-Acto knife to cut out what you want painted, and leave the rest. I should clarify, the cowl is painted, the rest are decals.

I took the WACO out to the field today and put one flight on.

I had worked on the aileron linkages and changed the throws. The WACO did not want to roll the way I had it set up. I dialed in a bit more throws and now she will roll. I just need to work on my technique a little more. Put in a good flight and the landing was a bit sub par as I touch down sooner than expected and ballooned the landing.

On another note my 5yr old grandson put 4 flights on his Sig Kadet and I let him do all the landings today. 3 of them were perfect soft smooth landings in the center of the runway and the last one was off to the far side in the high grass. The winds had picked up but he handled it well. I think he is hooked.
Here are a few shots of the WACO and my grandson flying his Kadet.

As for the Waco, man that sure looks pretty! I love just looking at it!

Holy cow, you must be a proud grandpa! He'll be doing 3D flying to beat the band by next year... That last photo of your Waco is hard to distinguish from the real thing, great shot.

The little guy is really doing good. He has been flying the simulator for a year now. He eats breakfast in the morning then get on the simulator until it is time for the bus to come and then gets on the simulator for about an hour after school. I forgot to take the video camera today, the next outing I will shoot video.

The WACO shined up good, I sprayed it with Detailing spray and it really made a difference and also made cleaning easier after flying. Next Saturday I will be taking the WACO to the Fall Classic in Lexington Ky. Should be a good time.

Hmmm... Tell me more about this... "Detailing spray". What kind do you use? Is it okay to use on vinyl graphics? I really like the sound of cleaning ease!

David,
Here is a link that will show you the product. The product works fine over vinyl decals. http://www.wizardsproducts.com/store...p?productid=11

I missed going to Lexington this weekend,
As luck would have it I came down with a serious case of pink eye on Wed. The doc gave me some drop which didn't help and wound up referring me to a eye institute yesterday. They gave me some new meds that seem to be working. A real bummer this is the one event I had scheduled to attend with my WACO all year. Oh well there is always next year.

Hi VJ,
The drop are working and my eye is feeling much better. I am taking my grandson to the field this morning for him to get his solo in on his Kadet. He has flown and landed but he hasn't taken off yet so today it is all his. He is excited and ready to go. I will shoot a video of the little guy flying and post it later.
