Thanks to John aka skylark1 who pointed out that I had overdone the rib stitching on the fin, I have redone the fin correctly now. The reason I'm admitting this mistake is because I don't want someone to make the same mistake. The pictures show the correct rib stitching on the fin. Also John thanks very much for pointing this out to me now rather than after I had painted it.

You can't get ANYTHING past John!!! He's a great help to all of us Waco (whacko???) builders. One thing though Lonnie, the reinforcing tape still goes over the rest of the ribbing on the fin. In fact, tapes go everywhere fabric touches structure. Mitch

Mitch you are correct about the tapes being used where ever the fabric touches the structure. In discussing this with Lonnie and checking my photo files I have discovered that sometimes areas are missed or have been changed inside so the tapes are not there. On Lonnie’s fin compared to the YMF and YKS fins (same tail group on both variants) the long diagonal is taped and sometimes stitched. The short diagonal is sometimes taped but not always and the short vertical was not taped on the planes I examined.

Part of the confusion on the vertical fin taped depends on the builder/restorer and the condition of the underlying structure. The short vertical is recessed enough inside the fin ribs that it does not contact the fabric.

Examples;

YMF Classic NC 14081 has only the horizontals taped and stitched, both diagonals are only taped.

YKS-7 NC 17457 and NC 17474, YKS-6 NC 16246 have the horizontals and the long diagonal taped and stitched; the short diagonal is only taped.

VKS-7 NC 31663 has the horizontals and both diagonals taped and stitched.

I had never noticed the difference in the tapes on the fin. You are doing a great job with the Waco and you should be proud of how it is turning out.

I spent a lot of time this weekend doing stuff over. If you look closely at the first picture you will notice that the ribs for the elevator do not line up with the ones on the horizontal stabalizer. The ribes for the elevator where put in the place where the instruction said. However I did not tice this problem until after covering and putting the rib stitching on. Duh!!!!!!!! So to fix this I had to remove all the rib stitching and covering to move the ribs to their correct location. The second picture is the corrected elevator

Next the aircraft that I'm modeling has extra fuel tanks in the upper wing panels. So I removed the cap strips where neccessary to put in 1/8 inch balsa panels for the details of the extra tanks

Finally the "N" struts are now ready for final detailing. They have been cleaned up and primed. The final detailing will be to simulate the welding around the Metal fittings on the struts. Working on the Cabane Struts now.

Been working on the Cabane struts and doing some detail work. Here are some pictures of the Cabane Struts, They are still in the ruff. Need final shaping and clean up at the attachment points

Also started on the lower aileron push rods. These do not do any thing except go along for the ride. As the aileron moves these rods move with them. Still need final detailing using plastic tubing to get the correct shape. Also the Cowl in coming along. Still have a lot of work but it is starting to look good.

Looking Great Lonnie,
I had to work all weekend and our deer season opened back up for the weekend. I went out and walked the woods behind my house around noon on Sunday for about an hour and didn't see anything not even a track in the snow, came back to the house and went to the basement and started organizing my hobby room and getting ready to get back to work on the Waco. I went upstairs to put my hunting clothes away and my gun and as I was heading for the gun cabinet I saw 5 deer out in the field 600yds away. I quickly headed out and set out to cut them off if they came across the field. After about a 400 yd track I got set up and waited for about 15 minutes and luck would have it they came right to me, 3 bucks and 2 doe's. I shot the biggest buck in the bunch a nice 9 pointer. Not bad for a last minute deer on the last day. I still have to get the deer processed which I will do on Thursday and after that it is back on the Waco.

Really looks nice, any concern about the ailerons jamming if the rod hangs up, or can the servo over power the rod?

Hi Guys,

Just finished the Waco today, ran the engine and checked all the bolts. Now just waiting for good weather, Christmas day looks good. The c/g was right on. I put the big nmh 4500 packs on the firewall and made a very solid engine mount for the DA 150. Jim

I truely love your paint job. That is awesome. Who did the airbrushing? You? One thing beware of using the CG that the plans show. It is to far aft and will give you a tail heavy airplane and a real pain to land. Mitch (nine o nine) had the same problem. Hopefully he will jump in on how to really set up the CG. If not then Stickbuilder. Bill (Stickbuilder) was the one that found out about the wrong placement.

Hi Jim, awesome job on your Waco. Are you the flyer at Monster Planes with the DR-1 and the GeeBee? If it's you your paint jobs give it away.
If you move the CG an inch forward from where the plans show you'll be in the ball park. Best way though is to measure the total Mean Aerodynamic Chord (leading edge of the top wing to the trailing edge of the bottom wing while in a horizontal position) and then measure for 28% of the total from the top leading edge. Makes a nice handling plane without a lot of down elevator required for level flight. I also recommend to anyone building one of these AMR Waco's to kick the leading edge of the stab upwards by 1/4 to 3/8ths of an inch. Too late on yours but is doable if you really want to pull the front stab tube off and relocate it.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the C/G info, I should have mentioned that I did move the c/g an inch forward after reading some of the earlier threads as well as talking to someone at monster planes who has a number of flights on an AMR Waco.

The DA 150 is out of my Gee Bee and has about 220 flights on it. I am puting a new DA 170 in the Gee Bee, it could use the extra power.

I do the paint work myself, I am an old school sign painter by trade. Jim

Be real careful with the CG. enclosed factory drawings show it more than an Inch in front of the rear spar. I also agree with Mitch that the rear stab is off by at least 3/8". Take off will not be fun if you are off. Lots of quick down trim if thing are off. Have someone close that can add down trim quickly just in case. Mine took twenty eight clicks of down trim to get it into level flight. Make sure you have the ability to add that much down on the first flight.
