RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
I mounted the cowl tonight and it fits up good. It was approx 1/16" shorter than my old cowl which is no issue. I still have the old cowl and I will be able to use it as a pattern for the cutouts for the muffler stacks and the Venturi on the carb. The cowl is attached by 5 screws around the aft perimeter. I will drill the screw holes out in the mount block and install pieces of Gold-N-Rod to install the screws into. This will keep the screws from vibrating loose.
We are supposed to get 4-8" of snow overnite so I think I will play hookie from work tomorrow and spend the day plugging away at the Waco. I need to mount the engine and do a final fitting on the cowling before I start putting the primer on.
I will post some pics tomorrow.

We got 7" of snow and I called off of work. Too many idiots between here and work on the roads and well I figured one less idiot is a good thing
I monted the engine for the 1st time on the new fuselage, no issues as I used the old firewall and engine box so it was just a matter of bolting it on. The engine is a 3W-157 and it is a real nice engine, alot more power than the Waco needs.
I am attaching a pic of the cowl mounting blocks, you can see I drilled out the screw hole to accept a piece of Gold-N-Rod, this will eliminate any worries of the cowl screws vibrating loose.
I test fit the old cowling and it fit pefectly over the engine and cleared the exhaust and venturi. I will use the old cowl as a pattern and make the required cutouts in the new cowl. I hate this part[&o] Makes me very nervous cutting into a nice new fiberglass cowl.
I will post some more pics when the cowl is mounted.

If you say so
The cowling has been trimmed and mounted. I have a couple little areas around the exhaust stacks where it is a little too close so I will adjust the openings slightly. Overall the fit is good. I mounted the old prop on to check blade clearance and it is fine. You can also see there is ample air exit at the back of the cowl. I will remove the baffle from the old cowling and install the mounting brackets inside the new cowl.
Next I will remove the landing gear and the bottom wing center section and get them stripped and cleaned up for primer. After that the room will be cleaned out and given a thorough cleaning to get ready for spraying primer this weekend.
Later!!

The landing gear has been stripped and sanded as well as the bottom wing center section. I sprayed a light coat of high fill primer and both pieces are going to need some attention to get them ready for the Klass Kote primer and paint. I will have to pick up some more spoty putty and primer tomorrow.

Nice progress, cowl looks to fit perfectly! Did you have to get your exhaust originally modified to fit inside the cowl? Looks like in the photo that part of the can is tapered...
Snow may be pretty to look at but I've had my fill of it for the rest of my life! Looks like the snow that hit you is heading up my way. I'm hoping to do what you did...stay home and get some work done. Keep up the good work Anthony.

Hi VJ,
I saw the snow was heading your way, too bad we can't blow it south to Robert. I think he was too cold to work on the plane the other day when it only got up to 65 deg
I had to modify the cans to fit within the cowl the 1st time around. I basically just cut off one side to narrow the can up my approx 1/2" and had a guy at work weld some flat aluminum plate onto the cans. Worked great. The spark plug caps line up perfectly with the blisters in the cowling and they have about 1/4" clearance. If the engine was any bigger it would not fit very well.
Hope you get enough snow to stay home and get some work done. I have a club meeting tomorrow evening so I won't get any work done until Friday.

Hi Guys,
I am working on getting everything ready for primer. I have been cleaning the room trying to remove all the dust from the room. That is a tall task to get a room dust free that has been used for building/sanding. I started from the ceiling down and it is getting close. Another good sweeping and then sponge mop from the ceiling down and I should be ready to hang plastic. I will post some pics later when I am ready to start laying down the primer.

Well after 10hrs of solid work I am ready to start spraying primer. [&o]
The room is as clean as I could get it, the walls and floor are covered in plastic. The plastic has so much static charge it should attack any dust that gets into the air(hopefully). I just don't have enough room to get all of the airplane into the room for spraying. I will have to break this up into several spraying sessions to get it all primered.
I have all the Waco parts wiped down ligtly with thinner and all necessary items masked off.
I picked up stir sticks, mixing cups, paint strainers and inline air filters. After short break for a snack and coffee I will mix up the primer and get started.

Gary so far so good,
The primer sprayed very well at 24 PSI. I mixed equal parts epoxy, hardener and reducer. It covered very well for just a light coat. I will give it a few minutes and go give it another coat. The reducer appears to gas off very quick and set the primer.
I poked back into the room to take a couple quick pics.

Thanks VJ,
I tried dropping to 18 then slowly raised it while shooting a piece of drywall, 24 was the magic number.
I have the 2nd coat applied and I am done for the night. Right now the room is not fit for man nor beast. I would not be able to tolerate spraying this stuff without a respirator for sure.
I will take some pics in the morning. The rib stitching and tapes really popped with the 2nd coat. I can't wait to get the gloss white sprayed.

Second that! Looks great! You guys can really build! I can't wait to see the second maiden... you are going to video it, right?
I wish I could be building this weekend but I got sick, head ache, body aches, the usual. BUMMER!
Keep well and keep painting!

Hi David,
Thanks for the comments. I do plan on have someone shoot video but I am going to try and keep the attendance to a minimum. Even though I have successfully flown and landed this plane I am a bit gun shy. As Great White sang "Once Bitten Twice Shy".

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Anthony,
I'm in the thought process of mounting the engine. How much overlap do you have between the back edge of the cowl and the front edge of the cowl ring that is mounted to the fuselage? How much gap between the front of the cowl and the backside of the prop? You are off to a good start with the painting.
Chuck

Hi Chuck,
If you look at the mounting blocks I installed per the plans the back edge of the cowl sits behind the blocks 1/4". If you look at the pics I posted you will see the screws for mounting the cowl are 1/2" from the back edge of the cowl and fall in the middle of the blocks. The more overlap you put the less air is able to exit the back of the cowl. I have 3/8-1/2" of prop clearance at the front of the cowl.
Of course with the right thrust built into the engine box the clearance varies.
Hope this helps!!

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Anthony,
I'm building the Barth Waco, so I had to refer to the AMR manual. The way the manual describes the mounting, the back of the cowl and the front of the fiberglass ring are even with each other which is what I'm trying to avoid. Your overlap sounds and looks like about 1/4".

Hi Chuck, I forgot you were building the Barth kit.
The 2nd coat of primer turned out nice. I will move the fuselage and the wheel pants out and start primering the other side of the parts.
Here are a few pics.

The last of the primer has been sprayed.
I used up every bit of the primer (1qt) which when mixed and thinned added up to 3 qts.
Once the primer has cured on the simulated fuel tank and aileron's I will start adding rivets. That will probably take me all week. If all goes well I will start putting the color coats on next weekend.
