One thing that can be said about the AMR gang is that they listen and respond. They seem to be very concerned with the quality and viability of their product.

Lonnie and all

Here is the comparison between the Pica and Amr. I believe that with some special forming of the leading edge on the Amr one could fudge it. Just shift it down to were it should be. Also when you add the last piece of wood to the leading edge increase it thickness to allow this forming.
For now

You may be better off adding material to the bottom of the rib from the front spar forward and reshapeing and slope the front top down before assembly. Very interesting comparison.

Hi all
The problem is, all this causes the problems at the wing tip. When the leading edge of the AMR gets to the wing tip it is in the wrong location and causes all kinds of havoc when trying to correct the wing tip. I believe like others that maybe the wing tip should be laminated rather the one piece and balsa blocks from the kit. Because of were it starts and how it flows upward from the 4th rib to the wingtip. I don't see any other way to get the gentle curve that the full scale has. As the Master Chief said. It has to agree with the 3 view.
Enclosed
This is enough on the wing tips for now

It looks like a very well engineered kit and very BIG,
I am not an expert on the Spacewalker by no means but it is looking good to me. The fiberglass work looks very nice.

I had to work this morning but the rest of the day is mine to work on the Waco,
I am going to get the axles and wheel pants mounted and work on the nav. light housings. I think I will try to seal them with several coats of PolyC to get them ready for primer and paint. The wheel pant installation should go very smooth.
Later!!

I have one pant mounting complete and I am waiting for the epoxy to dry on the other one.
I like the mounting, there are two 1/4" oval ply plates expoxied to the inside of the pants on each side, the one on the landing gear side is drilled to accept two 6-32 blind nuts which is used to secure the pant to the landing gear. I drilled a hole in the other plate just large enough to slip the end of the axle into, this helps to support the pant. I will put a layer of fiberglass over the ply plates to assure that they do not come loose. The wheel pant is very sturdy and the 6-32 bolts will keep the pant from rotating.
I have 2 coats of PolyC on the light housings and I will give them a light sanding tomorrow and a coat of high fill primer and see how they are looking.
Here are a few pics of the wheel pant mounting.

Anthony,

That is exactly the same system I used and it works great. The pants are very secure, particularly on the outside. I liked your idea about the extra glass to secure the plates. I hadn't thought of that and one of mind came loose. I have stripped my wheel pants and am getting them ready for fresh paint. This is the perfect time to get them glassed.

Thanks for the idea.

Bob,
Make sure you really rough up the inside of the pant good. I hit the inside with 60 grit paper to give the epoxy something to bite into. I think I will add 2 layers of 2 oz cloth.
Later!!

I have the other pant mounted and I am calling it a night, I have to go into work for a few hours in the morning. I would much rather work on Waco parts than F-22 Raptor parts[:@]

Bob,
Check the pic below of the wheel pant on the full scale, there are 3 screws on the outside of the wheel pant. These will go right into the oval ply support on the model to add extra strength and best of all it is scale

Hey Anthony

Are you going to do the fairing from the strut to the wheel pant? If so I will be very interested in seeing how you do that.

Anthony,

That would keep them in place, but frankly its not all that attractive. I am adding glass for reinforcement, which should do the trick.

By the way, I don't know what you're using for wheels, but I thought I'd pass along what I did. I used Sullivan SkyLite 7" wheels, which I got from Tower. They have a nylon sleeve which will accommodate bearings. The bearings are 1/4" ID by 1/2" OD. They add considerable support and the wheels spin like a Roulette wheel. I got them at Bearingsdirect.com Here's their part # R188-ZZ SR12 I wanted to make sure that the wheels didn't have different rolling resistance to degrade ground handling. Because of the plane's weight, it takes a fair amount of thrust to taxi.

Lonnie,
I do plan on doing the fairings(cuffs) at the wheel pant/landing gear, I think I will carve them out of blue foam then glass them and disolve the foam away.
Bob,
It may not be that attractive but it is scale. I am using 7" wheels from AMR, they use 7/16" axles and are pneumatic and have bearings in the hubs. They spin very freely on the axles. I will be running low air pressure to help cushion the landings.
Later!!

Bob
Be real careful with these tires. I went throught 2 sets of them in the beginning. The last flight before changing them, a tire came off the rim and jammed causing the landing gear to be torn off. They are not strong enough for this plane. The tires that AMR now have are much better and worth the cost. I did a lot of research into tires for this model and helped them find the current sources for the tires. The only pitfall to there tires is the tread that is being used. Not quite scale. But I have been told that some builders have frozen them and turned the tread off to smooth on a lathe. Also If you go to Kenda there K301 tire could replace the tire using the AMR rim and Tube and it is closer with the rib tread.

Thanks for the tip on the treads, I may try to do the same on a lathe at work.

I am finished with mounting the pants, I added 3 screws into the outside of the pant into the 1/4" ply support plate. The pants are very sturdy and should not pose a problem except for the worse of landings and I think the pants will be the least of my worries if that happens.
I sanded the PolyC on the nav lights and sprayed a coat of high fill primer then a little spot putty on a couple areas that needed attention. After a final coat of primer they are looking good and ready for paint. When i turned them on the lathe I left a lip for the lens to fit over and the plug for the lens is the same dia. as the lip, when it's all said and done the lens shuld fit snug on the housing and I will bend sone wire to make scale lens holders.
Here are a few pics.

Anthony, I noticed that my wheels are a little loose on the shaft and the bearings are a little crunchy. They improved after I oiled them. I don't think there will be any problem with them being a little loose. They are certainly stout. Looks like they might have been intended to be used on a 2 wheel hand truck. Who pays attention to the tread anyway when you have all of that glorious airplane above it.

Thanks Ken,
I just sprayed the lights with Dupli-Color Chrome paint[8D] They look really nice, I will post some pics as soon as they dry and I can take the mask off. I think after I get the LED's installed I will mask off and spray the inside, this paint is shiny enough to simulate the reflector.
I would say you are right about the wheels being used for a 2-wheel dolly or something similar.
