I am sorry to hear about your loss. It made me think about my work shop (garage) and all that I have in it. Good luck with your next project, I enjoyed reading your build. I have a Spad on the building now.

Great News...My Spad is FINISHED! I'm really happy w/ the final outcome. I want to thank all those on this site for their input. My "Custom" landing gear came out really well along w/ the leather Cockpit Combing. I found a great source for decals, Callie Graphics which helped w/ the rudder Decals and the "Hat in the Ring". The plane weighs in at 17 lbs and the Balance is perfect to the plans spec. I'm going to wait till next year for the First Flight.

Thanks Again,

Ray.

Hey guys, I have a Spad built and ready to fly. You can see pics in my profile, (I think). My question to those that have flown it is,
Do you have to change the attitude of the top wing? A guy at a Dawn Patrol flyin said he had to add an 1/8" under the back of the top wing to make it fly right.
What do you guys think? Maybe he just built his wrong??

All depends on what one means by "fly right". Mine flew better without aileron differential.

That's a real nice Spad there Spiritwind.

I have not seen the instructions for the BUSA Spad, but if it is anything like the Pup and the Ne-17, they recommend that the flat underside of the wing be level with the thrust line (or Centre Line) of the fuselage.

I would start there with equal incidence on both wings and make changes if required later.

Good luck with your maiden!

Sorry to hear about your garage fire. That happened to my next door neighbor. Except my smoke detector went off in my detached garage, wired into my house. It saved my garage, but not his.

I'm looking for the top view for my Spad. I'm looking for Frank Luke 3 views. I'm not ready for paint just yet.

G-62 for power...

I am giving myself a Balsa USA Spad for Halloween….and thinking of putting in a Saito 2.20 or an OS Gemini 300T. What do ya'll think? My only gas engine is a DA 50R, and I still like the weight and sound of glo.

Boo to "glo" in a plane like the SPAD XIII. Gooey, smelly, etc. I put a Zenoah G-38 in mine and it was awesome. My new one has a G-38. The other gas engines choices mentioned above are good choices too. Gas = cheap, easy to maintain, looooonnnnnng flight times!

You can use regular household latex paint with Gassers as well.

And I really like that. The paint is cheap and holds up to tons of abuse.

I think your plane with either of those engines will sound a lot less like a chain saw and more like a plane..

Can a DLE30 be used with this plane?

Klord125, I don't think the DLE-30 would be enough power to fly this airplane. I have a DLE-30 on a GP Super Stearman and it is great. The usual completed weight of the SPAD XIII is 20 + pounds and biplanes have a lot of drag. I am just about finished painting my Spad, hope to have it flying before the flying season. I fly WW I airplanes, 1/4 scale. I have the BUSA Fokker D VII, Zenoah 38 power and the Sopwith Pup, Zenoah 23 power. Most everyone I spoke to recommended the Zenoah 38, and that is what I had planned to power mine. I did buy a DLE 35RA to put on it, others told me it produced more power than the G-38. So I set up the firewall for the new DLE-35. Then I bought my first ARF, GP Citabria and the DLE -35. My first experiences with the 35 was not good. Later found out that it was my fault that I could not get it to run right. So to make a long story short, I have a new Zenoah 38 and a new DLE-35. Both engines will have enough to fly the SPAD XIII. I have a long history with the G-38, very reliable engine, so my Spad will fly with the 38. Every thing I have heard about the Spad is that it is a great flying airplane. If you plan to build one, you should read some of the construction threads on the forums, I have one on RCSCALEBUILDER.COM , http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/...TID=15946&PN=2 . Health issues has delayed my progress in finishing it, but I am determined to have it flying this summer.

As jeffo states, the Spad with a G38 will fly like a Jenny. It is after all a fighter. I have built more than one Spad and have found that a DLE 55 is the way to go. You may think a bit over powering but truly it is not. Always better to pull back on the throttle than to run out of throttle. The 55 will give you the torq you need to loop and roll comfortably. It by no means flys fast but very Scale like.I also found that it flies better (in my opinion) with no differential in the ailerons.
The BUSA Spad kit is really nice but experienced builder will note the weak points throughout the air frame. If you are now building.... If it looks weak it probably is so re enforce the area. My 2c take it for what it's worth. Remember it's all about having fun.
