Hi richie no problem,

hi all, not been posting pics recently due to the fact im at the "visualy" boring bit at present,, covering lots of bits with yards of solar tex, only the fus sides to do now so back to the twiddley bits soon, rib stiching painting weathering etc meantime here,s some photo,s of past work, first one is of new wing tips, alloy tube replaces wood, next is the home made fittings for the flying wires, as this is what failed and caused the crash, i thought i would make very strong ones myself.

hi all

im sending this message just to try to catch up with you all, i seem to be having problems my end re accessing you, think ive finaly beaten the laptop into submission, so here goes.

pup has been on hold for a week to allow me to do some much needed maintenance on my Sukhoi, new servos and a tidy up, this is now done and if it posts allright ill be back with pup updates, also been busey making a former for the ally cowl to get some new ones made, this is also now done, as for the u/carriage from rugsley i hope he has been in touch will see him tommorow, if not i will ask him, but he has been distracted as his father was taken ill recently, i am also busey trying to source a manufacturer for my 3mm steel clevises in bulk as there are several oeople over here expressed an interest in a set and making them one at a time by hand is to time consuming not to mention expensive, also some sopwith rudder bars and control horns have been made as samples in 1/4 1/3 and just one at 1/2 (just because i could) am off to download some pics from camera now so will try to get some on soon,

I am getting my 1/3 Pup ready for the upcoming Ohio Dawn Patrol July 17, 18, 19. The Functioning Gear Rugsley made for me fits perfectly. I can't say enough about the Quality of work Rugsley turns out. I'm encasing the Gear in Oak for a more realistic appearance. Thanks again to Rugsley and all you WWI enthusiasts across the pond. Don't forget the Dayton Ohio Dawn Patrol is coming up Sept 25,26,27... Hope to see some of you there.. I'll post a couple of pics when the Gear is finished...Thanks Bear

Any who gets their hot little hands on any of rugsley,s scale products is in for a treat, We at Dawn Patrol UK lean heavily on the combined talents of the members and when I say there is real talent out there I do not exagerate.Since DP was formed over here last year the number and type of A/C has expanded greatly. So also has the relience on the expertese on individual members.I do heartily recommend you chaps log onto the rcmf website and have a look at the WWI info section www.rcmf.info is the place to go and scroll down to our section.regards Ken Hart DP UK Co ordinator

Great discussion form and great pictures, the landing gear was awesome. I am in the process of completing the frame of my pup. I am still undetermined which engine to use my brother says I can have his g38 I have a 42cc poulan converted chain saw engine and I have a new DLE 55. I like the idea of the g38 with the Toni Clark reduction system. I think with the engines I have the dle55 is the best choice. Also in the build I found the top wing uses a balsa spar and the bottom uses a bass wood spar. It was too late for me because I went by the plans that show a front basswood spar, but there isn’t enough bass wood for the job. So I had to piece together the spar for the top centre wing. I wish there was written instruction about this change in plans if there was I didn’t see any. Also I would like to know the proper way to cover the 1/32 plywood down by the top of the wing, also I would like to know what the dawn patrol is all about. Thanks for any in put

Chris, nice job you are doing......the PUP is a magnificent looking aircraft...a few questions..
What are you using for covering? Solartex?

also wondering if you have considered using reduction gearing for the ZG 62? You can run a scale size prop with fewer RPMs although the engine still needs to be in the 7000 rpm range, so its still screaming...also the reduction gear puts the prop center 75 mm higher.

I am asking these questions as I am also contemplating a 1/3 scale Fokker DVI from Glen Torrence and it seems that even the ZG 38 or 45 will fly this size plane well enough from comments other pilots have made...although the 38 seems a bit dicey for decent scale aerobatics...just wondering what your or others thoughts are concerning motorization....would be great if there was an affordable 4 stroke engine out there.
Seems almost sacreligious to put a 2 stroke screamer in a nice biplane....guess its a matter of taste..
Keep up the good work ...that cowl looks fabulous !

Sorry guys my name is Hector. I should have introduced my self; I am also building a pup that was my pup I posted. I messed up on the spars I didn’t receive the up date instructions on the spar up date from Balsa USA. I just came back from Toledo and talked to one of the designers of the pup and the reason the hard wood spar on the lower wing is too absorb the shock of a hard landing. He says the way I built it is okay. I also asked him about modifications to the tail in any way and he said the real plane was that way. But it’s more weight on the tail and that’s more weight on the nose and that’s a heaver plane. I asked him about the engine and he said the DLE 55 is just about right he said more power will rip the plane apart. He also told me to get a 26x6 prop that I got at the show. He says I should cover it with solertex I thought of using coverite and dope. What do you guys think?

Hi Hector,
Guess you can't argue with one of the designers of the Pup and while the DLE 55 is more than enough power, I have chosen a Zenoah 80 twin. This is for 2 reasons firstly the engine is heavy and this model is always tail heavy with some builders needing to add several pounds of lead to the nose to get it to balance and secondly as a twin it is very smooth ( minimal vibration ) and vibration is the main enemy of any airframe. As to power. being fairly old fashioned technology it is only putting out about 5 Hp which despite the much bigger capacity (80cc as compared to 55) is about the same as the DLE.
Anyway don't forget power is determined by throttle
I have a friend with a BUSA Pup with a Zenoah 80 and it flies like a dream on half throttle and has survived many flights.
He didn't have to add any nose weight to get it to balance.
As to Solartex. Great stuff have used it for years and the big advantage is that once it is applied it is a finished surface. No other sealers or coats required.
Cheers,
Tim

Guess you can't argue with one of the designers of the Pup...
The "designer" in this case, is not a neutral party. He's a saleperson for BUSA. BUSA markets Solartex. It doesn't sell coverite and dope. So, of course, their "rep" is going to suggest Solartex at a trade show. That having been said (and that much should be obvious) coverite and dope is a great way to go, if you're already familiar with this process. But Solartex is dead easy to work with and since BUSA kits are all about being as easy as possible, solartex seems like a natural choice.

And, of course, it's also (always) true that building scale often involved adding weight. Not always but often. And if you want a scale tail on your Pup, you'll almost certainly end up adding some weight...and then having to compensate for that weight at the other end of the model.

Hay guys thanks for getting back to me on your input. You are right on the twin; I have heard a lot of people using the 80 twin on the pup if you can afford it. I think that’s why a lot of guys use the G62. People who use the Toni Clark reduction system swear by it again if you can afford it. It’s the way I would like to have gone but I got the DLE at a good price. Also there is a new engine the MT 70 twin about 6 hp it is around the mid $ 400 range I think if I was still looking it would be the route I would go with and a big prop. I am still looking for coverite. One guy was going to order it but I haven’t heard from him yet and if I go to solertex then I will have to go to Balsa USA because no one sells it that cheep around here. I have never used dope but my brother has a lot of experience with it. can you still do stitching with solertex?
