Wasn't it posted as a pdf here a couple of pages ago. I think you sent me the one page from Flight and then I think GF came up with the Woodman article. If not, PM me with your real email address and I'll send it to you.

Wow, I've spent almost 10 pages working on the radiators! I've almost forgotten what the C1 itself looks like! On the plus side, these radiators are probably the last major scale detailing job. There's still lots and lots left to do, but nothing nearly as involved.

Careful, those sound like famous last words, dont you have a four bay wing to rig? I just started a new GTM kit and I'm so far away from rigging I can throw stones.

Rigging seems like small potatoes at this point. It's true that doing the scale rigging points will be something of a challenge, but I've got that mostly worked out already. BTW, I'm not planning on doing very much "cockpit" detailing since with the crew in place very little would be visible. I'll do a dashboard in the pilot's cockpit and maybe that "steering wheel." But that's about it. Seems like modelers often go all out on cockpits but then neglect more visible external detailing.

Without a doubt what my "shop" needs more than anything else is the ability to do repetitive custom parts in brass, aluminum, and GRP sheet. So in short, the ability to do my own photo-etching and my own CNC milling.

Still, by tomorrow I'll be finished hand-making the remaining GRP flanges I need. It's tedious. On the other hand, labor is cheap and doesn't complain too much.

Still no point posting photos. I'm just still grinding away, literally, at the fittings for the radiator. I've got the flanges done and now I need to drill and shape the brass support tabs. The problem is that when I use the dremel to drill through the silver soldered tab, the heat is melting off the solder. I suspect the bit has lost its temper (let alone me). I think I might have to drill these by hand, or open up a small hole with a round file.

I'm sure looking forward to getting back to work on the CI itself! []

*****

The trick seems to be to only switch on the dremel for short 2 second bursts. Sort of like firing a Spandau!

Don you ARE working on the C1, lol, but I know what you mean. It seems like some details are entire projects of thier own. Your doing a great job of simulating these rads and thy're going to look great and be a very noticable part of the model. Keep on keeping on dude.

The parts count is now over 350 individually hand-shaped parts. And no, I'm not particularly proud of that. In fact, it seems like a particularly messy "solution" to the challenge of modeling the radiators. I do enjoy the challenge of coming up with a good modeling solution, but in my mind it ceases to be a good solution if you have to throw tons of either money or time at the problem. A great modeling solution is one that can be easily emulated by others.

Now that I have a plan for the panels, I'm starting to think about those ''riffeln'' again. I accept that there's just no way at this scale to replicated them physically, but I still have the option of trying to create an impression of them somehow. One approach is with a marker pen. I've tested this and it works from a distance, similarly to the fuselage nails which did with a permanent marker. Up close the effect to too strong (like stage make-up) but from a foot or further away, the impression is good. Probably a better result would be to paint lines on with a slightly darker tone of ''steel.'' But I don't have a clue how I'd manage that.

HI Abufletcher
sorry my english

after i looking this C1 radiator picture, i put near computer the electric stove because i was cold........look picture ....the same, i think if electric shop has this part it is good for se5a radiator too[sm=wink_smile.gif]

That's interesting material. And it's good to see that, like me, you're always looking at perfectly good things around the house and thinking about how you might cannibalize them for model parts! But this material wouldn't work for the C1 radiators either. I'm convinced that no ready-made material (at a suitable scale) exists.

As I predicted, RCU's photo upload would get fixed about the same time as I finished the radiator parts. After a long two weeks of tedious drilling and grinding and filing multiple parts, I may be ready to actually start assembling the radiators! Deciding to mount all the fittings on full length 4mm dowels allowed me to eliminate 40 or so small parts. So in this photo you see 272 parts. And NO, I will not be making H-Z kits! [sm=bananahead.gif]

Of course there's still the 12-16 brackets to do, but I have an idea already in mind. And there's still some detailing to do on the detailing.

Geeze Don stop complaining, when you're done with this we're all going to be fawning over it for days. You consistantly do some of the nicest work there is to see here and I for one have been enjoying your carryings on and have been eagerly awaiting the finale! The stuff you do at your scale is remarkable. How much better would it be at 1/3.

Yeah, but there'd be twice as much complaining (or is that three times as much, 3 squared)?

The flange fittings are too thick so all together they're adding over 10-15mm to the total length! Which is unacceptable. So I need to thin each of the 48 surfaces down. I knew there would be something. I'm going to have to do this the slow, hard way with a file by hand since I've learned from experience that too much heat on a belt sander or a dremel will release the CA and the fitting will fall apart.

All I want for Christmas is...

The parts have to be as close as possible to the same size for everything to work together. So here are two simple "tools" I made to ensure uniformity. The first controlled the length of the 40 5mm tube segments, all to between 16.40-16.50mm which is as close as I can get by hand.

The second tool is needed to thin the flanged fittings and to ensure that all the flanges are perpendicular and that the fittings are all the same width. I resurrected a long forgotten mini-disk sander from Harbor Freight and as long as I do the sanding in brief touches, the CA holds up. The flanges will be thinned down to either 5.5mm or 6mm (not sure yet).

Looks like 5.5mm will work out and be very close to scale. A tenth of a millimeter variation doesn't seem like much, but add it up over the whole radiator and it starts to mess things up.
