Default 1/4 sopwith pub build (A Mick Reeves kit)

I have decided to build my pup. I am starting on the fuse first. This pup will not be a true WWI bird so for all the WWI purist out there my appologies up front. The pup will have a name and its going to be called "LTLBULY". Im building this for my dog..... You see I have a english bulldog named Bruno. In addtion to that, I used to have a MiniCooper s with a license plate of "LTLBULY" Anway, you guys all get the point. I hope you like the build, and to be honest, since I started this build on sunday, every day since I am getting more excited . I go tmy garage all cleaned up and Im ready to go. So here is part one. Did I tell you that my wife will pick its color scheem. I know that she likes black so its a good bet black will be a major part of the color scheem.

PART ONE: THE FUSE.....

I have set up my jig and have cut all the pieces and have test fit them together. Tomorrow I will epoxy them using T88 epoxy. Since I use the job I always make 4 fuse sides to have one extra for safe keeping. In addtion to that, I alway make templates of every part so that I can always make the kit again when the itch arrises.

I'm looking forward to seeing your model of the WWI aircraft flown by Flight Lieutenant L(awrence) Buly.

the reason I posted the photo showing the cross members is beacuse the plan set I have does not have a top or bottom view. This pic show the cross members and their respective lenghts they need to be. I have had this kit since 2006. I have been trying to decide if I want to put a Laser V200 in it or a gas engine? What do you guys think and for all who have build a pup what options do I have? Do you think a 30 cc engine will be good enough. I want to try to stay away from a 26Cc since I have had bad luck with them in the past. What about that Saito 30 four stroke gasser? A DL 30 perhaps? Who kows but I do need to decide soon, SANTA is a coming.....

Im building this for my dog.....
Has he had much stick time with this sort of WWI taildragger? If not, I might recommend that he practice first with RealFlight or a nice trainer. Our club prohibits all unsupervised canine flying.

Thats it, Im going to find me a bulldog head that is the same size as the 1/4 scale guys head and use that, we will see what I can come up with. He looks very similar to my dog too check him out. I had some stencils made for a graphic that Im going to put on the wheels. This was from the gear shift knob I had in my mini.

BTW, is there some reason "your dog" wouldn't want this to be a spot on perfect scale model (with perhaps Lt. L. Buly painted tastefully next to the cockpit)? He looks like a discriminating canine to me, one who appreciates the finer things in life. Seems almost sacrilegious to do a "sport scale" version of a MR kit. And you're going to be giving your wife the Pup datafile as selection choices, right?

I started to epoxy together the fuse sides, before I post that boring photo I wanted to share withyou some eye candy, its a pup almost built that my friend Tim loaned me for reference during my build. This pup was built by Jim Kiger of Replicraft and Tim bought it from him a few years back but has not had time to finish it up. This plane was built following Jims Replicraft plans. Enjoy:

Tres sweet indeed! But I can see how it would be almost overwhelming to take on such a building task. I'm certainly not going to try to achieve anything like this level with my Boddington Pup. I'll just shoot for "good enough for me."

BTW, does anyone know where I might find the sort of hinge joint Jim used on the elevator? I've been looking for something just like that!

I was looking at tht too, I think Ill take it apart and check it out more closly and Ill let you know, Oh by the way I also go from TIm his pupReplicraft plans. THSES ARE OVERWELMING after looking at them you dont know where to start or what kinda scale things you want to add to your model. I love allt he fittings but having to make them all looks to be quite a task. Im still trying to figure out what scale he reproduced these at.

The Replicraft plans are 1/5 scale. Is this model done to a different scale?

I am glad to see your Pup build as I have the MR Camel plans. I also have the Replicraft Camel plans too, so it is nice to see Kiger's work compared to his drawings. I would like to know how it is to work with the T-88. I have thought about using it or Weldwood. Kiger planes are 1/5.

Ok cool, Ill check but the plane looks to be 1/4 scale but dont quote me on this Ill measure the wings and let you know this afternoon when I get home from work. As far as the T88 goes, if your used to working with the 30 minute epoxy its tough having to wait 24 hours for the stuff to cure [:@] That is if you use it when its 70 degrees, on colder days it can take up to a week to harden [:@][:-]

This morning I went out to see the curing progress and the epoxy was still soft, the pieces are stuck together good enough to remove but I wont remove it from the board until tonight giving it a full 24 hours cure time

Ill post the pics of the wings when I get qrouind to building them. The attachment points tot he fuse is very cool and its 100% to scale from what I have been told. No dowels, each wing has two metal fittings that attach to the spars. There is a rod that is fed through hole in the fittings that secure the wings to the center wing and bottom of the fuse inside the dummy wing root mounting point.

The wing ribs were made out of very thin ply the entire structure is extreamly light weight but very study....

Mick's Camel is nearly scale but differs from the Replicraft drawings in a few places. One is where the wing meets the Fuse. The full size plane and the Replicraft drawings so no extra material at the wing seat unlike the MR plans. There are other differences as well but they are minor.

Im all for a good joke

I fitted all the pieces together first befor gluing, here are some photos. The tail has alot of stress on it so you will have to make relief cuts like Don made in his build. I think Im going to glue everything together except the last cross members then attach the rear tail post fitting. I dont know how you did yours Don but to be honest I have not even taken the fittings out of the box. I did check the rest of the parts and it looks like Im misisng all the fork ends. [:@] this makes me mad Ive had my kit since 2006 and Im jsut finding this out

Oh I made the cross members out of spruce. The weight of the spruce with all the members cut came in at 1.27 oz. The weight of the balsa and spruce cross members as Mick suggest in his plans came in at .64 oz so the weight is double for the cross members if I use spruce. I like the spruce its much stronger. The balas that came in my kit is very soft.

More pics to come.

Bruno,

Have you seen this thread?

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_91..._1/key_/tm.htm I'm building a full size Pup from Kiger's and the original Sopwith drawings. Kiger's are the originals scaled and re-drawn.

The biggest difference between original and ours is the Steel Tube Fuselage.
