ORIGINAL: Sethhunter

Hi John,
Looks great! I've found latex is gas proof except in locations where raw gas may stand on it. My Halbi has a hatch over the filler and vent. Sometimes fuel burps out and wicks between the hatch cover and side of the fuse. The latex doesn't take that for long. In those areas I use warbirds clear x-linked PU with good results, over the latex.

I'm starting a new job in MA, just outside of Boston. Will be moving the family around year end. Not much flying for me this summer. Will be looking for a club around Westford MA!
Boston is quite the move Seth. Good luck to you. Mercer County RC Society is losing a great guy and an excellent builder. I'm hoping John and I can still bother you for some CAD help every now and then? Maybe you can make Rhinebeck one of these years?

All the best, Ron

Some more progress. The center section is painted with the exception of the top color wrap around. The cabana struts are finally done.

The top of the fuselage behind the cowl was actually the fuel and oil tanks. They were exposed like the SE5. I am just adding the details and using 1/32 ply for the straps and trim. Still have to add the eyelets and simulated weld spots. You should be able to see the two filler caps and tank in the photo's.

It's been awhile but I am making progress. I have started getting the fabric on the fuselage.

Looking forward to seeing this. I'm sure the photos don't do it justice.

Thanks Martin, I will be happy when it's done and I am anxious to see what it looks like next to other 1/3 scale models.

Decided to play around with the finish on the cowl. From the photo's it is obvious that the cowl was pretty sand blasted and beat up from the Middle East sand and sun so that is what I am doing. I have started by using Sea Salt to simulate the sand blasting from the prop wash. I will dirty it up some more so it looks like the photo. Pretty easy to do. Just sprayed some water on the cowl, sprinkled the salt around, dried it with a hair dryer and whipped it off.

Got some more details done. Almost forgot the foot step! More painting done. Still have to dirty up the cowl some more.

No problem Mike, Satin white #7791, Gloss deep blue(Ultra Cover) #249114, Apple red (Painters Touch) #1966. Don't worry about the gloss you can knock that down with some steel wool and spray some clear flat or satin over all of it. Cheers.

Some more work on the fabric and another 150 eyelets. I have about another 100 eyelets to go to finish all the lacing.

I love how grimy this is becoming! I have always been struck with how dirty and grimy the airplanes in the Palestine theater became. And I don't think it was just because the planes were more CDL than PC10.

Nice job, John!

Thanks Martin, Yes pretty beat up and dirty. Very few "factory fresh" birds or at least photo's of clean one's. Castor oil being thrown all over by the Rotary engine and sand from prop thrust not to mention the scorching sun fading the paint. They didn't keep them under a tent!

Finished the Clerget and mounted it in the cowl. I used a Mick Reeves kit. It is held in place by a spyder I made from aluminum angle stock that is J B Welded inside the cowl. I wanted to be able to remove it with the cowl so I can get at the engine and belt drive if need be.

JohnF.........I have been following your project all along - very nice work on an unusual subject. I have never had a decent dummy engine in any of my planes mostly because I didn't plan ahead and ended up without enough room - something was always in the way. The next time you have the cowl off, could you take a close up picture of how the dummy is mounted inside the cowl. It might take some of the mystery out of the whole dummy engine process.

Wow, that's a LOT eyelets!

Cheers,
Art

Thanks Art, no problem posting a photo of the mounting for the dummy. Sorry I didn't do it in the first place. It's not difficult other than making sure it's centered in the cowl. It will be a little while but soon.

Here ya go, more legs could be added to the spyder but it is plenty strong the way it is.

Thanks. Looks like it takes very little JB Weld to fix the bracket to the cowl. I had always assumed that a big glump of JB Weld would be needed but then again you know what they say about "assuming". So basically JB Weld is used like any other type of glue........I guess I should have know that.........

Art, a blob of of J.B. Weld does the trick. It is liquid metal more like epoxy.

One of those projects within the project is researching and making a scale prop. Some very kind people over at The Aerodrome have provided exactly what I needed. Turns out the prop. was made by Vickers LTD. and also used by Sopwith and others. Teus will be getting the scale prop made for me since I do not have the skill or patience to do that. I'll apply the details.
