Default TMMY Composite 1/5 Scale Cessna 182

Hi All,

I thought some of you may be interested in the TMMY Composite 1/5 scale Cessna 182.

Hey ya all,

Just thought I would let you know that Tommy has almost finished building my 1/5 scale Cessna 182.

Here are some photos he sent me today so now it just needs painting with the colour scheme and the interior added.

I have decided to go with a more modern colour scheme which I will show once its completed.

Enjoy!

Hi Fellows,

Just another update from Tommy he hopes to have the Cessna ready for shipping soon.

I am guessing just a couple of finishing touches with the interior.

Here are some pics of where the model is at now.

Enjoy!

I am hooked on this tmmy 1/5 cessna. Yours looks beautiful!
How much is it to your door, may I ask?
Can you choose any color scheme of your desire?

Thanks
David

Hi David,

Thanks for the compliment on my Cessna. Hopefully it is not too far away.

The cost of the kit is $800US and delivery is around $200US via EMS Speedpost so all up including postage $1000US.

Yes you can choose custom color scheme including color of interior and seats. This is where Tommy really sets himself apart from the other kit manufacturers.

Regards,
Steve

Hi Hotspot,

I will ask Tommy in my next email to him and ask him if he received your emails.

He has been very busy at late completing a few customer orders around the same time.

Hopefully a reply is not too far away.

These are beautiful models and great fiberglass work. The only problem is that they are 6 to 7 lbs too heavy. They fly like a F-16 compaired to the other very popular 1/5 scale 182. Good Luck.

Hi David,

I am happy Tommy replied your email. I know he has been busy at late completing a few models and may not always reply straight away.

Yes I am only too happy to share my experiences during the build.

Looking forward to receiving my model soon. I will be sure to take plenty of photos from every angle.

I have already received my order for the high powered replacement lighting from Optotronix I intend to use with this model.

Here is a video sample of my lighting setup on my much bigger 1/3 scale TMMY Cessna 182.

Hi all,

Tommy has informed me my model has been sent and is already on its way to me.

Unfortunately he did not get a chance to take photos of the completed model prior to shipping but I will be sure to do this for you guys.

I should receive it in the next week or so.

I have also ordered a FEMA onboard starter to go with the twin cylinder motor I will be using in this plane, providing it fits in okay.

Cheers,
Steve

Hi David,

Was trying to get online here all day yesterday to send you the below. Anyways I have since received my model. I have taken a heap of photos during unpacking the model from the box (see below).

I am hoping to use (that is if it's going to fit under the cowling) an ASP 1.60 flat twin motor with a Keleo Creations exhaust setup. See photos below.

I have also ordered a FEMA onboard starter suited for this motor to enable remote starting of the motor from the TX.

An on board glow system has already been acquired for this motor to provide a nice reliable idle.

I would like to stick with a three blade option, possibly Biela. I have one laying around here that I hope to use in blue/white.

I have received my Optotronix lighting order of super bright LED's which I will use to light this plane up. I realise Tommy already includes LED lighting but generally this is the diffused type and is not all that bright in daylight conditions. I have been very impressed with the Optotronix range of lighting from Germany.

Servos, I will be using Hitec Digital metal geared HS-5625MG's and with my HFP-20 servo programmer I will be able to accurately setup my centre and end points and make use of the included hitec annodized blue alloy servo horns.

For the RX I will be using a JR1210 as I fly JR12X transmitter which will have plenty of channels for the flexibility I require.

It will be interesting to see how this model compares statically to my much bigger 1/3 scale TMMY Cessna 182.

Cheers,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Congratulation on the safe arrival of your new Cessna. And thanks for taking time to take and post all the detail photos.

It looks awesome. I like the details of the scale rivets, the front landing gear and the luggage door.

I hope that the ASP 160 twin will fit in the cowl, because I want the OS 160 twin in my, which is the same size of the ASP 160 twin.

The FEMA on board starter is a great ideal. I hope it fits and the airplane is able to handle the 24oz of extra weight.

I was thinking of going electric and set it up with Hacker A60 20S or the Hacker C50 14XL with 3.7 reduction and 8cells 5000 or 6000mah of lipo battery. But, I don't know if there is enough room for the lipo battery between the firewall and the instrument panel. Could you help me roughly measure that demension?

If, there is not enough room for setting it up with electric, I think I will follow your set up down to the scews . Hope you don't mind!

Thank you,
David

Hi David,

Yes, I am very pleased with the final product. This plane will be added to my fleet of model aircraft and will compliment my 1/3 scale Cessna 182.

I will take those firewall measurements for you tonight. I will remove the front and rear seats as they are removable using phillips type screws. This will also provide me an opportunity to see what other hardware may be underneath.

Photos to come shortly.

My only concern about going electric is the reduced weight in the nose. This model will most likely need a great deal of weight up front to balance her.

I have looked at how the 160 will fit in the cowling and unfortunately there is not enough room in the cowling to hide it completely. That is with the prop hub positioned correctly as to the nose ring.

The pro in this respect is that having the motor towards the front will provide the extra depth required for the onboard starter to fit in. The unit will arrive in the next couple of weeks so will know for sure then.

I would ultimately like to run this motor in this plane, but as always considering my options.

Cheers,
Steve

Default RE: TMMY Composite 1/5 Scale Cessna 182

Hi Steve,

I think that the 160 twin is made for this aircraft as far as realistic sound and scale appearance. Now, if it fits in the cowl without cutting holes in the cowl. I hope somehow it will work out the way you want it to be.

When you say this model needs lot of weight in the nose, it gives me hope that going electric will not add too much weight. Because, the total weight that I have calculated for setting up with electric, including eletric motor(21oz), motor mount(5~8oz), spinner(3-4oz), ESC(4oz), BEC(3oz), and battery(47oz) is around 86oz, which is around 5 and 1/2 bls or 2.5 kgs.

I mostly concern about there isn't enough room for the battery to fit in.

Steve, could you also measure the outer ring where the nose cone fits?

I am going to see my model in a few weeks and I will able to get the measurement myself. But, with the holidays' discounts that are going on right now, I want to take advantage of them.

Steve, you should know that you are much appreciated for sharing everything that you have been sharing, especially from me.

Best regards,
David

Hi David,

No worries at all. We are all enthusiasts here and that is why there are forums to share information and help each other out, well that is what my way of thinking is.

I will measure the nose ring on the cowling for you tonight. Even better I'll take a photo with the tape measured across it so that you can view the actual length in either inches (imperial) or Centimeters (metric). Best of both worlds for you. Will also remove the floor panels and take the measurement from the firewall inside the fuse.

Good to hear you are ordering one of these planes. You may find these models can take a bit of time to be manufactured so try to be patient. That is my advice just so you don't get too stressed or worked up. Tommy always delivers his models as for my own experiences. This is my second model that he has built for me. Who knows maybe I will order a DC3 or a C185 like our friend Randy has.

Yes I have looked over the cowling again this morning and the 160 will not fit in unless I cut holes on either side to allow the cyclinder heads to stick out either side 5mm-10mm. I agree with you in that this motor would be perfectly suited to this model as far as realism goes.

My other reason for going for this motor is that I have a soft spot for twin cylinder motors as they generally are smoother running than single cylinders.(providing both cylinders are igniting). I will be using on board glow system so this should not be a problem. Being a four stroke it should provide good torque and will suit a three blade prop setup.

My concerns for electric is the placement of the weight within the model. That said you would need to try to keep as much of the weight up the front as possible. You may be restricted as to space for the batteries, that said you can perhaps put them up front in place of the fuel tank. They are the fuel tank/s after all.

Note my Cessna comes with the fuel tank fitted lengthways across the width of the fuselage in behind the instrument panel. I hope to keep this here, provided the on board starter unit fits in front of the firewall with the motor. There is a good chance of this but I won't know for sure until it arrives.

One of the first things I intend to do is change over the lights to my Optotronix. Surely they will blinden me.

Hope to also order an Axel scale civilian pilot as well. A scale aircraft needs to have a pilot at the controls.

Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve;

I've been enjoying the thread, reading the comments and viewing the pics. (Keep it coming)

Tommy has done another great job for you. I like the detailing he has done both exterior and interior.

Re the engine issue, what engine did Tommy recommend or use on the prototype and was it fully enclosed.

Is there any location within the cowling that the engine would fit without cutting the cowling.
If so, what is the distance the engine would be moved rearward.

Have fun with your new addition.

Regards
Randy

PS The additon of the Optotronix lighting system and the pilot will look outstanding.

Hi David,

Here are the photo's of the measurements you requested of the cessna.

Hi Randy, thanks for the congrats and well wishes. I am looking forward to getting this model in the air asap. With the motor/cowling situation if I do use the 160 twin the cowling will only need to be cut out slightly so 10mm or so of the cylinder head protrudes outside. Mainly the cam covers will be outside and possibly some of the head but that is uncertain until I do more ground work and exploration.

Hi Randy,

Tommy recommends a 120 four stroke or 20cc petrol motor for this model. I wanted to go from a motor that sounded and ran a little sweeter than a single cylinder. If I use this motor I don't think the cut outs in the cowling will detract too much. I have seen worse as far as petrol motors are concerned. I really don't want a cylinder head hanging out the bottom of the cowling and nor do I want to have an unscale exhaust hanging out on an angle.

From the photos I have seen of this model there seems to be a mixture of four strokes and two stroke petrol motors being used. In both cases the cowling needed to be trimmed away to clear for the cylinder heads. See the above photos in my first post on this thread. I also found another one showing an OS four stroke single fitted in a side mounted configuration. see photo attached to this post.

I will take some photos of my motor with the custom Keleo exhaust. This should work quite well in terms of where the exhaust tubes are to exit the cowling.

Cheers guys,

Steve

Default RE: TMMY Composite 1/5 Scale Cessna 182

HI Steve,

Thank you for the photos.

I was hoping it has a bit more room than what I see from the photo. Maybe, going electric is not feasible.

I will wait to see it in person, before I make my decision.

Regards,

David

Yes that too was my concern with your thoughts on electric conversion option. I would assume that it would some decent power as its a heavy model for its size. Hence why I opted for a slightly bigger motor. I don't want the model to struggle on power or feel like the engine is constantly loaded up.

The full size 182 is a serious cruising machine with plenty of power for comfort and speed.

I have looked a little more into the fitting of the ASP motor and see the attached pic as this is roughly where I anticipate the cowling to be which is just through the middle of the cam covers. I don't think I will need to cut out the engine cylinder outlines as such. So this may certainly be okay and not too drastic or ugly to look at.

Cheers,
Steve
