Well the bottom wing is completely sanded, sorta. Now to add the leading edge sheeting and sand some more. I might have the wings done by monday. LOL

Ley me reiterate, I might have the bottom wing done by monday.
I think I might be being a little too anal on these. I just don't want any flaws showing through after covering.

This morning I am getting the leading edge sheeting on the bottom wing. Then I can sand the L/E to shape and fit the wing to the fuse. My goal for today is to get the bottom wing installed to the fuse along with the LG. And if I'm lucky get the belly pan made.

Gotta let the glue dryfor ten minute's and then iron the sheeton. Then I can sand. Woo Hoo! Gettin there.

On a side note for future builder's. My plans have three different chord measurements on the wings,11-7/8", 12", and 12-1/8. At the onset I decided to go with the 12".

For the chord?

And the wing saddle sheeting.

Wing has been mounted. Tothing like a good drill bit extension.

It's coming along nicely Robert. What glue are you using; CA ?

acerc 01-05-2013 04:07 PM

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s

Thank you Vasek.
TitebondII wood glue and System Three's epoxy. Not a big fan of CA.
Now I have to figure out how I'm going to mount the gear where it is easily removeable.

flyingagin 01-05-2013 04:43 PM

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s

Is there some more structure or mounting in the back of the gear to keep it from bashing the crap out of the wing?

By the way looking darn good!

Ken

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s

Ken if you will look in the first photo, where the rear wire set's on the wing, the sheeting has been removed so the wire will rest directly on hardwood.
It's on it's own two feet now. So to speak.

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s

I have double checked everything and indepently everything is per plans. But the gear pitch too far forward when mounted, they should be inline with the bulkhead. So I am going to have to unbraze them, readjust, and braze'em back together.

flyingagin 01-05-2013 07:12 PM

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s

Well you are not the only that has to readjust. You have more than enough company I am sure.

Ken

Thank's Ken, I'm sure.

I thought you were cutting out the leading edge skin and recessing the gear into the wing and have the gear rest flaton the mounting block. It looks to me the rear of the landing gear is a little higher makeing it look worse than it really is. Am I understanding this properly?

acerc 01-05-2013 08:04 PM

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s

Strait the plans show it sitting on the wing.

acerc 01-05-2013 08:13 PM

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s

It just dawned on me what you meant. Yes, that was one of my thoughts early on but there would have been too much modifications to make it happen. I figured I could just make them removeable and not rotateable. Much easier.

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s

I was just looking around and found a web site , pitts s1t at ( airliners.net ) not all are s1t, they have 37 pages of pitts to look at. It seems thats very scale the way you precently have the gear.

acerc 01-05-2013 09:14 PM

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s

You are correct that in a lot of those photos it does appear the gear has a slight forward pitch. And what I have is pretty much the same. No one at any airfield would ever know the difference. Here is what I'm looking at.

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s

Ace,
where the gear meets the fuselage is it moved back from the location on the plans? because of the bulkhead thickness of A looks reversed with bulkhead AA? Your gear seems to sit back a little further than the plans? I'm guessing the angle on the front of the gear leg will be what shows up most, I suppose your right to redo and remove the angle.
Just my 2ยข

acerc 01-06-2013 07:23 AM

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s

Strait the bulkheads are exactly as the plans , so is the position of the gear. Other than the angle of the legs it is spot on. The problem is not with the plans it is with my positioning of the legs when brazing. Not a big deal to correct because I still need to add the center support and will be brazing there anyway. If I had it to do over I would have assembled the entire gear on the airframe instead of over the plans. Building over the plans did not accomodate for the angle of the fuse/wing, but was a flat and square build.
