Zlin 226 - Information sought
While sheltering in our clubhouse from the cold winter wind this morning several of us tossed around different aircraft that would be good subjects to consider for a practical sport scale model. To cut a long story short we decided that the Zlin 226 is one that is worth pursuing further.

We arrived at this one as it retains the looks and general practical moments of the later 526 series and variants, but avoids the complication of retracts.

So far so good...... I have subsequently done a Google search and come across dozens of superb colour photos showing lots of great colour schemes, but precious little technical info from which to prepare a plan.

I have managed to ascertain that this aircraft was produced circa 1952 and had a span of 33'-9" and a length of 25'-7'' and that is about all.

Can anyone out there advise where we may find some reasonable three-view drawings and basic technical info such as the framing and covering materials.

I am aware that MAN has a set of plans for the 526 variant, but these are for a model that is more serious than we want to go. I have a copy of MAN January 2002 with the construction article and small-scale fuselage only details.

Are there major differences between the 226 and 526 fuselages other than the obvious double/single cockpits?

Sig kitted one about 10 or 20 years ago. It flew very, very well.

Hi Nony,

It did occur to me shortly after submitting the above post that there had been a kit produced some years ago. I couldn`t recall whether it was by Sig or Top Flite. Kits from USA, and indeed all over are very thin on the ground here.

Is there anybody out there with that plan who is prepared to produce a copy to sell or preferably trade?

The Sig kit was for the 526, and so was the Pilot kit. But John Pond Plans, through the AMA website, has one or two plans, German sources, I believe, for the 226.

I agree about the 226--nice plane to model. I didn't find a lot of photos on the web--If you've got some favorites how about sending a couple of links.

Hi Jim,

I just did a google search on 'Zlin 226 aircraft' and took it from there..... Try www.airliners.net and then specify Zlin 226. You can spend ages in there and find all manner of goodies....

I haven`t had any joy with the Sig the Sig plans as yet, but am on the trail of some 226 3-views here.

Alan, the airliners site must have added a lot of Zlins since I last looked a year or so ago--yes, I could spend ages there.

I just checked the AMA plans list and they have a 126, a 226 with an unlisted price, and two 326s. They are from model magazines in Germany and Czechoslovakia. I have no idea of how detailed or true to scale they are. Wingspans range from 41 to 66 inches--nice sizes for my taste. Also, Bob Banka lists 3-views.

The Sig is unquestionably a 526.

I have the MAN Zlin 526 plans, cowl and spinner. The 226 looks so close I would use these plans as a base if you want a 120 size plane with a 83" span. You could also reduce them. Having a cowl and spinner could be nice. You would just have to redo the LG. The plans appear to be very good.

Just back from flying the 83" 526 (leccy powered) - it's a great flyer.

The canopy on the 226 is very different.

Hi All,

This is all good stuff.

Nony - The Ebay offering is not a practical thing for me from the freight angle.

Carl - We are aware of the excellent MAN plan and may order a set if we get into a jam.

Red B - Thanks for your info. I have downloaded all those 3 - views.

R101 - That`s a very impressive lineup. What`s on the test rig at the far end?

Jim - We were thinking along the lines of IMAA legal. Maybe 1/4 fullsize which comes in around 100" span, but in retrospect, the S.M.A.L.L. thing is gathering momentum here and I just happen to have an OS FS.26 currently unemployed - hmm? Plenty of possibilities now.

If a Zlin 526 will do, there is a very nice set of [link=https://sslrelay.com/s84068217.oneandoneshop.co.uk/sess/utn;jsessionid=154491dcc9b1d34/shopdata/0090_Construction+Plans/0020_Aircraft+Plans/0010_Scale+Designs/product_details.shopscript?article=2290_ZLIN%2BZ-526AS%2BAKROBAT%2BSPECIAL%2B=28MW3063=29]1:5 scale plans[/link] available that was published in Radio Control Scale International a couple of years ago.

I prefer the looks of the 526 before the 226. Either way, both looks great in the air doing gracious aerobatics รก la "Lockheed Trophy"

Great contributions, everyone. Nice to see all those photos and drawings. The 326 has quite a different airfoil--almost reflexed at the root, lots of washout at the tip. The Airlines photo of the two 526s with the rainbow in the background is really special.

R101, please tell us more about that lovely line-up! I was wondering if that was a scale rotary on the test stand. I saw one run at Old Warden. Two Hurricanes and a Beaufort--any more info? Beautiful Zlin!

Alan, big and small both have their charms. I flew rubber and CO2 freeflight and then learned RC on an 049 powered Schoolmaster, and have continued build mostly on the small side, though I also have a 1/5 scale Thomas-Morse Scout and a Four Star 60. I picked up an OS-26 also based on all the glowing reports I'd heard--haven't run it yet. My enjoyment of the little ones depends very much on keeping them light. I think a lot of 20 size kits disappeared because they were engineered the same as the 40 size versions and they were too heavy to attract a following.

Nitpicking, but to me it looks like a Bristol Beaufighter, not a Beaufort.

RE: Zlin 226 - Information sought
Yep - Bristol Beaufighter - electric power

The engine on the test stand was a Saito radial I believe.
