True to scale .60 size royal corsair

1 Attachment(s)
I'm going to be building the royal .60 sized (senior) corsair from scratch.
Templates were drawn in cad and provided by Kelsey_B and they are much appreciated, also he provided scans of the entire build book.
This started out last winter in 2008 with me and my flying buddies Donald and Brian going to a local swap meet. Donald had his eye on a .60 sized corsair,
covered in blue monokote which had the color fading from the plastic and stuck in the wood. The aluminum cowl was loosely hung on the nose and was completely uncut and never had holes drilled in the wooden rails indicating servo's had not been put in place. With a $40 price tag he immediately bought it minus a canopy. Over a few days he put the servo's in it and mounted an o.s. .61 FX. I looked it up on flee bay and realized it was a royal kit and the looked it up on rcu only to discover the build logs by Luke aka Dion and Kelsey_B.
Through investigation of Luke's forum I saw that he had done his research well and that the royal corsair in the .60 sized kit, was true to scale in all aspects!
1/8th scale .60 sized kit
Wingspan 61 1/2 inches
fuse length 50 3/8 inches
washout
root chord
etc....
Full size corsair
wingspan 41 ft X12 to get inches X 1/8th = 61.5 inches
fuse length 33 ft 8 in X 12 for inches plus 8 X 1/8th = 50 3/8 inches

Will indicate rest of measurements shortly.

RE: True to scale .60 size royal corsair

Oh and on the original no flaps or retracts.
on the scratch build will be using built up tail feathers covered in fabric.
Also since tail end of fuse on original is thich wood with much carving required I will attempt to use formers back there and sheet to keep light.
Will have retracts from lado, flaps, 8 operational gear doors and functioning retractable tail wheel.
someone on flee bay is making re production aluminum cowls for it and will order one this week.
Oh forgot new one will have fabric in areas where full size did and will be finished with 3/4 ounce cloth and 30 min fisishing resin.

I'm a little perplexed that the leading edge for the horizontal must be shaped by the builder but oh well will do. My buddy Brian has some device that you put up to the lading edge or any curved surface and tighten the bolts down to capture the shape of the surface. wonder if electronic balsa shaver would work best.

working on building tail. Its nice to have a horizontail that actually has an airfoil to it, where on the hangar-9 corsair the horizontal is 2-D, and on the top flite it is "flat".

Will try to provide pics, so far I have the horizontal built. Had to pin it to a cork board.
post your email and I'll ask Kelsey_B if he minds if I send you the cad drawings he sent me.

Hello,

Thanks, I believe you already sent me the files last week. They look great. It will make it a lot easier to make templates.

Hello,

Thanks for the pics! Keep'em comming. How are you cutting your pieces, bandsaw, handsaw? Did you make a material list or just cutting as you go?

I-fly-any-and-all 04-28-2010 10:50 PM

RE: True to scale .60 size royal corsair

i had to use my jig saw. The band saw I have is vintage 60's equipment made by craftsman using 3 wheels it likes to throw the blade a bit and my last one snapped when I began cutting the ply formers.

will be using a built up elevator and rudder to save weight just like the top flite corsair.

Sorry for being a bit slow with the build.
I have to resheet one side of the horizontal as the sheeting was uneven and wavy.

dang it look at this, a cockpit kit for the .60 sized corsair! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=160435564601
I set my high bid at $35 thinking sure I'll get it who's going to go that high, seller cheated me out of it and used a fake account to bid a penny higher so I wouldn;t win and used same account on 6 other auctions ending that day,one wasa new ikn box royal zero .60 size and the cheater bid a dollar more than the bidder because they didn't feel the selling price was high enough. I got a hold of flea bay customer service and they got their foot up the sellers behind.

just got my cowl from doug winslow it is flawless
http://cgi.ebay.com/Royal-Marutaka-C...item3efcc5b7ce

Even came in bubble wrap just like they did when royal was in business.
Note this is a reproduction cowl. most likely down with a progressive die on a high speed press.
I'm a macinist and cant see how it would be possible to form one on a lathe.

I don't see how you jumped to that conclusion, the winner only had one bid in the last 30 days,, that item. If it was just a shill account why so many positive feedbacks..
I'm pretty sure you just go out bid incrementally up to $.01 more than your max. Someone wanted it more

Also,
The cowls were/are "Spun", not machined or pressed. The same way metal bowls, Cymbals, etc. are made.

Zactly.......i do that all the time. in the last 10 seconds of the auction i'll put up a bid that i'm willing to pay, and BAM!!....it's mine. i never understood bidders on Flebay, they will go into a bidding war days before the auction ends......good for the seller, but tough to justify for the guy who really really wants it. then again, i've bought stuff that should have gone for well over 100-200 bucks for 15 dollars cuz the seller listed it at the wrong time, or in the wrong area.
