Dad loaned me his Cruzer stick full of pics and movies from Cali-Jets and the PVMAC/Scale Squadron event.

I'm sending this one to [link=http://www.fathead.com]Fathead.com[/link] for the shop.

Great project. I bought Ty's original Ta-152 from Jeff Q. It has a 144 inch span with a quadra 75 and honestly flys very well with that powerplant. It weighed in somewhere in the low 40's but flew like a kite. Loops were easy and rolls were somewhat slow with that big wingspan. Look forward to seeing your bird in the air.

Hmmm so thats were Grun 3 ended up. You talk about her in the past tense...is Grun 3 still around? My experience right now with my Meister Scale D9 with my GT80 is I am underpowered just a little. So really looking for 100CC plus with this project.

Hey Pandi,

She's still in town flying.....just flew last week at the Fond Du Lac warbird event. I just don't own it anymore, my buddy Casey has it now. The sliding canopy is cool. Set up on a seperate channel, I used to taxi out with it open and close it just before T/O.

I'm thinking if we go with the sliding canopy, we should use a separate small air tank to isolate it from the retract system.

David, I will be following you every step, Ive got plans to build David Andersens designed 1/5 scale TA-152, But If you ever want to build 2 of yours
let me know I would sure let you:D

It's been unbearable in the shop for the last few days with the recent heat wave. I was able to start making the fuselage side strips.

To insure everything stays straight... I like to make the side sheeting into individual completed strips, then join the long strips like "wing sheeting" to complete the assembly. This allows me to pin the strips together and match sand them. I also like to add a 6" long key strip where the sheets have butt joints for added strength.

I was pretty perplexed on how the new FS2D was going to look at the Trailing Edge of the wing. I drew lines 4" forward of the leading and trailing edges on the plans, placed the Fuselage Sides in the new forward position and simply extended the line from the B1 Assembly. Then the "Light Bulb" went off... This creates a 4" long flat spot just behind the wing Trailing Edge. Once sheeted with 1/2" balsa, I should be able to blend this area in real nice so it's not noticeable.

Still plugging away at these fuselage sides... Got the second strip assembled and one fuselage side is complete. When building something this long and floppy, it a real challenge keeping all the seams straight. I'm pretty sure I just made the longest sheet balsa edge glue in modeling history!!

I now have both Fuselage sides completed. One of the most important things you can do when building a Meister is to pin the fuselage sides together and edge or "match sand" them to create an exact duplicate of each other. I marked the locations of the crutch and formers on the inside and cut the appropriate notches in the fuselage sides to accept them.

After all this carpentry... I'm ready to start building.

I now have bulkheads F4 through F8 set and the stringers spliced and reinforced with 1/16" plywood each side. I decided to trim the bottom of F4 to sit on top of the B1 Assembly just like all the rest of the bulkheads. The new F4A will be fitted per plans 4" ahead of F4.

First dry fit of the fuselage sides, B1 and Nose assembly. Amazingly... Everything looks pretty good. All the bulkheads, tabs and notches line up. With just minor fitting, a bit of sanding here and there... I think I have this sucka beat!

Now that I'm satisfied that the basic fuselage structure is going to go together well, I need to start thinking about some of the other modifications I can make before gluing up the Fuselage sides and bulkheads into a rigid structure.

1. New thicker wing ribs... a. I really want to cutout the new wing saddle shape before the Fuselage side are attached so I can match sand the new saddles.

2. Modifications to bulkheads that come in contact with the new wing saddle... The bottoms of these bulkheads will need to be trimmed back and notched for the new wing saddle doublers.

3. Firewall will need to be trimmed out a little where the new dummy exhaust boxes will go for the resin casted dummy stacks.

4. 1/32" plywood doubler behind F8 to stiffen up the tail post.

Put a lot of thought and planning into pre-cutting the wing saddles to accommodate the new thicker wing ribs. There's really no exact way to do this but I believe we can get within a 1/16" or so.

Here's my plan...

1. By placing Bulkhead F3 on top of the wing plan I can see that Wing Rib 2 is pretty close to where the wing touches the saddles.

2. I placed Wing Rib #2 on top of the wing plans and marked a line where the front of the rib will plug into the fuselage.

3. Using a triangle to square up my straight edge I then weighted everything down.

4. Using a small scrap of 1/8" balsa to simulate the top wing sheeting, I placed Wing Rib #2 approximately 3/8" forward at the trailing edge to simulate a 3/8" overlap in the top sheeting.

5. After measuring the bottom of the rib to the straight edge at both ends, I pinned the rib down and used the scrap 1/8" balsa to trace around the top of the rib.

Just for reference and feel goodies...

Notice how the top of the airfoil almost intersects the seam in the fuselage side. My cut line is real close to a picture I found of Ty Brown's modified cutout.

Modification #727

Here is the old D9 Bulkhead F2. I had previously whacked off the bottom of it because I knew it was going to stick out below the wing saddle. Now that I have my new wing saddle cut line, I marked off the areas that need to be removed to accommodate (2) 1/8" saddle doublers. I also decided to trim the bottom an additional 1/4" just to make sure it won't leave dimples on the top of the wing when it's bolted down.

Probably driving everyone nuts with all these mods and your thinking... "Just build the thing already!"

I'm trying to get as close as I can with all the changes. It really blows hacking and grinding stuff out with the dremel tool after everything is glued up and sheeted.

Over the Labor Day weekend I was able to get the fuselage jigged and mounted to my flat building surface. The sides and bulkheads tacked in place to the crutch. I'm real pleased how straight everything is turning out. I've gone over everything with levels, squares and triangles. I have one small lift in one of the stringers but everything lays down nice and flat when you pull in the sides. Starting to go through CA like water. Note... That's a standard 6'-8" door and I'm still hanging off one end.

I'm thinking it might be a good idea to put a good bead of Hysol around the firewall on both sides after I get the sheeting on.

I would use shoe goo as its easier to take the firewall off in case you need too:D

go wiener go. my fuse is heading west as well speak.

will start a D9 soon up here in B-Town
