Dumas Jolly Jay trawler
I enjoy RC boating quite a bit, I actually enjoy watching the boat go over good sized waves rather then rocketing across the water. I also love fishing vessels and have since I was a small child. So naturally I have been looking for a RC fishing boat that looks at least semi relistic. My questions are...
Will the Jolly jay trawler be able to handle some "weather"? Or are the scale Dumas boat kits glass smooth water sailing?
Also how difficult is it to build and get a kit like this running?
I just wanna make sure it is up to what I want out of it before spending all the time building it and buying parts for it then being let down.

I would go with the Thompson Trawler. It is a little larger than the Jay.
There is on on e-bay right now.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Dumas-Fi...QQcmdZViewItem They are getting a premium price since they are going to a ABS hull/ I doubt if MACK has them in stock.
The larger boat will handle more chop but not the Bering Sea. It is not a real difficult build.
This boat is a nice size and will not let you down!

I was thinking about the thompson trawler, but since they are harder to find and more expensive. Not to mention the jolly jay comes with all the hardware to make it run and I'd have to buy that extra for the thompson. Any idea what size motor comes with the jolly jay? I think they said it was 4.8Vs?

Dumas hardware can be iffy in quality. The hardware kit that came with my Dumas Myrtle Corey has mis-drilled holes. I'll have to use their bits as patterns to make my own replacements.

I actually just bought a JJ about 2 months ago and I have a bunch of pics of the kit (I havent even had time to start it yet) The hardware does seem cheap and the 'mahogany' plywood is probably # 2 common (or worse). I wanted a small boat because I am at college and dont have a lot of room to work so a 3 ft + rig would be hard to work on. I can send you pics if you are interested in what the kit looks like.

Sorry to bring up an old post but does anyone know where to find a Thompson Trawler? I've been scanning ebay, and I got severly ripped off from Quick tech hobby. Any information on a place that might still have some would be awesome.

RE: Dumas Jolly Jay trawler
hi
how about trying something abit diffrent. still a trawler. try the model slipway, maggie m. it is a shelter deck trawler like you see in the north sea, off uk shores.
i have done this kit and its great, really sturdy grp hull and i have had her in some rough water, looks great and really rides through the waves. like the original was designed for!! the model handles really well, large prop in a kort with a becker rudder (double folding) so it turns in its own length nearly. also at 10kg (22lb) its not to heavy for gettin to the water.
hope this is useful

I really like the looks of the jolly jay, a big plus to me is the small size. My reason for liking this model is that the pond in my back yard is pretty small. Ill proabally get a vacutug first then this or a Dumas Whitehall. Good luck with your choice.
