I am looking for a little help with a lobster boat. I got the drawing from another member here on RCU and I'm currently having them printed. I'm having two sets made, one in 30" and one in 40" length.
I want to build this for my daughter who is seven and loves boats. Normally I build giant scale aircraft.
My plan was to build the 30"
What I'm looking for is a set of midwest plans of the lobster boat to use as reference. Or, some idea of wood size. Such as the keel, hulling sheeting, bulkheads etc, etc.
Of course any help I could get would be of great help.

For the keel 1/4 bass wood Frames 1/8 lite ply skin 1/16 balsa or ply and lite wt fg cloth. the chines strips of 3/32 balsa-4-5 pcs glued one on the other.so you can round the chines. I lost the plans for my Mid West lobster boat 11 yrs ago when I moved. Hope this helps Larry

If anybody else has any suggestions or things I need to be aware of while building this please post them here.
I could use some suggestions on a motor, ESC, prop or any kind of websites for marine related accessories.
This is completely new to me, as you can tell.

Hey Bob,
I received the booklet and plans today. I already have the booklet copied and having the plans copied on Thursday.
A great big THANK YOU for loaning them to me.
As soon as I get the plans copied I'll figure up a wood list and get it ordered along with a couple stuffing boxes.

A change of plans on the lobster boat. I'm going to build TWO of them at once, One for me and one for my daughter.
My daughter's will be the traditional lobster boat and mine will be a little more modern. More of a pleasure boat. I'll post the builds here. This should be fun. My daughter plans on helping me. She's actually pretty good at helping. She painted most of the dash on my award winning P-47 pictured above and helped with the foil covering.

I do need a little help.
Motor, ESC and prop selection.
Any ideas as to what I should use? If you suggest any, can you supply website and part number.
I want it to run but not real fast.

Since you are into the giant scale aircraft you may even know the builder as he is into large WW II 1/5 th. scale Warbirds. Anyway, you will find a lot of answers to questions at his build site.

Hi Wayne,

Note: The boat in that thread was bigger and required 2 motors, 2 ESC's etc.. Your boats are 30" and Lobsterboats typically have one motor & one shaft, etc. You can use that forum and still get (2) of everything and use them to power both boats. The Astroflight 25's are a bit on the faster side.

I would use a single Astroflight 25in each boat. They haveplenty ofpower to geta Lobsterboaton plane. Also some less expensive alternatives would be a size 550-700 electric motor. The 700 size motor will be faster than the 550.

I hope this helps you a bit further.

Question, If I decided to go with the 700 size motor, what size ESC would I need? Or which one would you use?

I don't know what the problem is with the link. Even went to the site through RCU, copied/pasted it and it was still bad. Soooo, how about going around the horn and opening a new page , go to RCU, Forums, RCScale Boating, andabout half way down the page is " Midwest Boothbay Lobster Boat build!! " by Check6 posted 11/23/09. That's where I wanted you to go.

He used a speed 600 motor (I think it was a DC drill motor) and a Traxxas EVX-14.4v ESC with a coupld of 7.2v batteries in series.

Hey Bob,
I read that forum about 3 times, Thats what got me interested. I'll go back through it again and check the motor section out again.
All this motor stuff is confusing
really all I'm looking for is a good setup that won't cost a small fortune.
I guess the old saying is true.
A boat is a hole in the water you sink money into. Guess it does not matter what size it is.

I think a spped 600 will be about the right size. Bigger will be faster. Props . . . I always ask. If you think electric motors are confusing, props are mind blowing. At least with an airplane you know a 2 blade 12-6 is 12" diameter and (theoretically) it travels 6" forwar per revolution. It sort of works the same for boats but then they throw "mm's" (not the candy) into the equation and I get totally confused. So I ask, given a particular motor, what props are best for a boat weighting 'x' pounds and 'y' length, or tell them what boat it is.

BTW, Rich is a great person to talk to and listen to, he knows what he's talking about.

I'm so new to the electric scene that eveybodys voice will be heard. Problem is sorting it all out.
I have been looking through different websites and I don't seem to be able to find a large amount of boat motors.
Is there a difference between aircraft and boat motors?

Yes and no. Helpful aren't I.

For the most part, I see "brushed" motors and Ni-MH used in boats unless you are talking about speed, then the builders/modelers go to the "brushless" motors and to the Li-Po batteries (lighter, more power).

You can go to ebay and search for Traxxas motors and get 1000+ returns including brushed and brushless. I prefer brushed motors with 21 turns or more and 5 poles or more HOWEVER there are always exceptions. For instance, the motors used in the example Rich gave you are 12 turn motors (12T) and if you go to http://cgi.ebay.com/TRAXXAS-ESC-AND-...item3cb92f4694 you will find one plus the esc, an XL-5 waterproof esc, just like the two used in the larger boat. In the larger boat he used large props, 2" if I remember correctly, which is probably way too big.

The reason I look for higher motor turns is "current"; the lower motor turns (and also the size of the wire used on those turns), the higher the current draw and the shorter the runs for a given battery mAh (along with current comes heat, another possible problem). Low turns, higher RPM's, more power consumed; higher turns, lower RPM's, less power consumed. Plus, for the type of boat you're building, the prop can only spin so fast before you get into problems with "cavitation", and the only thing I know there is you're basically turning 'air' instead of water. Rich can probably tell you more than I can. Any way, higher RPM's also means more heat for the motor and the ESC, each of which can be water cooled, but why do that if everything is properly matched to begin with? As for prop size, I think the rule of thumb is 125% x diameter of the motor can is the MAX prop size, Rich or someone else can correct me if I'm wrong.

That would be great.
On the build done by Check6 he used a traxxas speed controller. Will I be able to use the same one? If the motors are different will I be able to use the same batteries and speed controller. My thoughts were to keep the running gear the same in both boats, makes its a little easier that way.
If you have two, Let me know how I can pay you. And I'll get that to you.
