Into the deep end (Billings Smit Nederland)
I'm getting ready to build the Billings Smit Nederland Tug. I am interested in any hints, tips, or traps from anyone that has built this kit. I'm especially interested in motor choices and setups. Any info/photos/observations would be greatly appreciated!

I am sure he would enjoy a good discussion.
As far as motors, I prefer 12-24 volt Pittman motors. Typically less than 15 bucks surplus, if not free. Most people I know run them direct drive. The 24volt motors run on a 12 volt gel cell can move a 100 pound 8 foot Heavy cruiser like the Houstan with no problems. I have two 14v Pittman in a double ended ferry boat, it runs one engine at a time on a two inch three bladed propeller. They are able to push my 12 pound, 52 inch [link=http://groups.msn.com/ModelsandMiniatures/wsferryboat.msnw]Washinton State Ferry Boat[/link] at "light speed".

Thanks for the quick response! I'd not seen that site before. I'll look for some Pittmans. Do you use an ESC or mechanical?

I use ESC.
The pittmans typically draw less than an amp under load. So any 12v esc will do.
I have a Graupner, two of something called and MC-car-30, and just picked up an Msonik marine 15.
