Default Shaft lubrication for USS Crockett

Can anyone recommend the type of shaft lubricant that I should be using on the Dumas USS Crockett drive shafts. The stuffing boxes are about 12 inches long with oil-lite bearings in the ends. I currently have been using Morey's Super Red Premium Water Proof Multi-Purpose EP Grease. The grease doesn't want to go into the filler neck easily. When the shafts turn the grease comes back out the filler neck making a mess. Instead of lubricating the shafts so that they turn smoothly they tend to slow them down which strains the motors and caused all kinds of noise.

The grease you are using is fine.
However, you are packing too much into the stuffing tubes.
This is what is causing the friction. Also, when you place the boat into
the water, temperature change will also change the viscosity of the grease.
More friction.

Disconnect your motors, and use the propeller shafts to "pump" some of the grease
out of the tubes. They don't have to be full to stop the water from penetrating the boat.
Also find some brass tubing to fit over your filling tubes and make a cap that will slip
over the top and keep mess down to a minimum.

Thanks for the information. I have been getting frustrated by the mess, the poor motor performance and the accompanying noise

Hi, I agree fully with what Umi says, but, if you can`t get that brand of lubricant, Iv`e found LubriMatic`s Marine Corrosion Control & Trailer Wheel Bearing Grease just as good. I got a 14oz. tube at Lowes less than two dollars. Skip
