Dumas Chris Craft - Butterfly Keel????
Howdy,
My wife decided she wanted to try building a boat, and she fell in love with the Dumas Chris Craft Runabout. I have built boats before (fiberglass race boats and plastic electrics) but never a wooden one like this, so I am of limited help. What is a Butterfly Keel? We cant find anything in the manual or plans to illustrate what it looks like, or where it goes. Can somebody please help?
Thanks!
Ron

Ok, I got your Butterfly keel here.
on most keels you have a vertical piece of lumber that the frames sit on.
Dumas use two 1/8" pieces laid flat rather than on edge to form the stern of their boats.
Here is Pat Tritle's Description

The "butterfly keel" is the type of arrangement that Dumas likes to use on the rear hull section of their boats. The typical keel is a verticle member onto which the frames are attached. The butterfly keel lays flat with the bottom of the frames. Dumas uses 2 pieces of 1/8 X 3/4 bass wood for theirs, so the keel ends up 1/8 thick X 1 1/2" wide. The advantage is that there is a wider gluing surface for the lower skins, and insures a much straighter hull. There is also a substantial amount of material to pass the stuffing box through.
