Default Battery & ESC for Jim Wilder?

Planning to assemble this tug, which came with a 12 volt motor. All of the ESC's that I see are rated for car use, and I'm not sure if there is one that is rated for 12 volt applications. I don't want to spend a fortune (like to stay around $50 for ESC), and it must be reversible. Any suggestions for battery for this hull? Not sure if a gel cell will fit or if I'll have to assemble a pack from NiCads. Any help appreciated.

OK, I read the rest of the instructions which informed of Model Control www.modelcontrol.com and they have an ESC for $80 that looks like the ticket. Any other ideas? Also, the gel cell looks like the designed battery for this boat (I should have read all the instructions before posting).

FlyingPilgrim,
I thought the 'MCD' '480 was just about the nicest ESC I've seen advertised ... till I saw the prices! I think you could find other ESCs that would work just fine at lower prices. I'm not saying that the 'MCD' products are not any good. Just that they are kinda 'proud' of them...

Thanks, Doc.
If you know of any that will handle the 12 volts, appreciate details. It looks like all are rated for six or seven cells (7.2 to 8.4 volt), which won't work for me.

FlyingPilgrim, i think the 12v motor will work even if you power it with either a 7.2pack or a 6v SLA. the rpm will be decrease thou as there's a lower voltage coming in to the motor. why don't you try it first and see if it runs fine.
that way you don't have to buy another esc.

Pilgrim,

Go to http://www.horizonhobby.com/Shop/ByC...ProdID=PRB2314 They run around $40. and work great. I use them all the time. They should be able to handle your boat without any problems.
